Finally Cleaning Out My Bike Parts Bin

The bike parts bin: we all have one. They contain everything from popped tubes, spare parts we'll actually use again, handlebars we forgot we had, treasures of vintage made in USA stems, and rusty chains that we'll maybe someday need the extra links for something...? While the bike parts bin is useful, the problem is all of this stuff mixes together and becomes forgotten junk in our minds. Today, I tackle the impossible: downsizing, decluttering, and organizing my parts bin to make pare it down to only the stuff I'll actually use. It was a long journey, but I came out a better man by the end of it.

Donating to a local bike coop is a great way for other budget riders to get good parts and support the community

i was going to post the same thing. None of this shit should be thrown away. When i have stuff that's not worth the effort to sell, I give alllll of it to the local co-op. The co-op uses a lot of parts, sells some parts, and the real garbage, they make a run to the scrapyard and get a few bucks for it by weight.

I've been riding a road bike for a little over a year. Recently bought a second hand fixed gear for £150 and took it to my LBS to get them to help me set it up. They all got really excited that I brought in a fixed gear and gave me an astronomical discount on the service and they invited me to several of their fixed gear group rides along with giving me their contact details... I've been going to this shop for a year, I feel like I just said a code word and got inducted into a cult

I made a beater from the parts bin, but eventually broke it down for backup parts as needed. Once my bike reached its final form, the local bike shop got the parts bin. Don’t forget to support them by buying things there if you can pay a little more than online.

After a nasty divorce, I donated 90% of my home shop and bikes to my local bike coop. The look on their faces was worth it.

in Phoenix our community does a fixie swap every few months to get rid of parts we need.

Hey man that Thompson stem might be salvageable with a left handed drill bit to drill the stripped bolt heads. It might catch and pull the stripped bolts as you drill. Its worked for me in a couple of instances.

I like your minimalist pruning. I do the same thing. every 6 months I do another scan and see what else I can prune.

Hey Zach! Just wanted to say thanks! I got into riding because of you, currently riding a ss feather, waiting for new pedals and straps before I make the switch to fixed. i always regret getting rid of old bike parts , i just donate them to a bike shop as a trade in for spring tune up or repair but i always end up buying something i gave away at some point 😅 2:24 lowballers 🤣😂😅 that laugh said it all 🤣😂😅
