In this video, I take a first look at the last classic late 80's Optima Mid Kit Number 3140 released by Kyosho in 1989. With its full name being Optima Mid Customer Special, it was the last of its kind before Kyosho put the Mid family to rest. Could 2020 be the year that we see a rerelease of the race famous Mid family?

Removing the shell from that Mid gave me flashbacks...aged 13, I spent hours just staring at the chassis, thinking it was perfection and how much more sophisticated the belt was to my mate's Optima chain. Ha, thanks!

I had the Mid Custom Special back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, it had a TMS Tornado 12t double motor. Best car I ever had.

I also have a Mid Custom Special. Cost well under £200 a few years back. Came with unpainted original body and it now has brand new ‘Bridgestone’ branded tyres. There is a story behind why I have this car. I even raced it at the Iconic RC Revival meeting a few year ago.

Crashed mine so bad and nothing ever broke. Even with the monster hp motor. Super fast

Used to race one of these back when they came out, as I more or less wore out the optima mid custom that it replaced. Still have the custom special in about a million pieces up in the loft. Not sure whether I want to build it back up, and replace the broken parts (Front hub mount and possibly a driveshaft I think) or just pass it on, I haven't decided. After the turbo optima the custom special was definitely one of the sexiest looking cars of its time.

It would be nice but the channel hasn’t grown big enough yet. Once it does I’ll look for a unit to rent. Little inside track, crawler course and a bigger studio. Still have some ways to go mind.

The Turbo Optima is not that easy to find. Ask around on the Kyosho Mid forums and keep hunting on eBay. Kyosho cars are hard to find over things like Tamiya from my experience. That and demand more £££

My understanding is that there is the 3140 which has the plastic/fiber tray, and then there's the 3140fg which is aluminum tray

What a great car….. back in the day there were a couple of these racing at my local club, one of them belonged to a friend who lived on the same street as me….. I must admit to being quite jealous! He ‘upgraded’ to a Schumacher ProCat, which I’m not sure was necessarily the best move? The futuristic bodyshell design was not to everyone’s tastes, but I have seen an image where the cockpit has been masked differently (actually think it’s from the Kyosho catalogue of the period) & I think it really makes it look like a very handsome buggy indeed! Just a thought….. have you ever wondered of going beyond the Optima series & venture into Lazer ZX/ZXR ownership - which are a definite progression from the Mid Optimas?

Very nice find. You have a frp chassis while mine has an aluminium one. I think they might have changed that during the production run. Manual seems to show the alu chassis with sides slightly bent upwards. Any kyosho expert has some info? If you get a repro body, avoid the TBG one, which is too small. The Penguin one seems better.

I have the Penguin LWB body. I have talked with a few people about the chassis and as far as I can see, Kyosho offered this car with different types, one in Aluminium and one with FRP. What I don’t know was if you could choose at the time or if it first came out with the Aluminium and then the later cars came with FRP. Anyone?

@@RCKickschannel I think the aluminium chassis came first. Thereafter as an upgrade did the FRP chassis come out, the latter was an improvement being lighter and more rigid. I have checked my various brochures from back then. The upgrade LWB chassis is referred to as a "Carbon chassis" in a Kyosho brochure I have, but described as a "Fibreglass chassis" in my Optima Mid kit. Whether this is the same chassis with different names or 2 different upgrade chassis is unclear for me, though.

Have looked into more documentation, the LWB aluminium chassis is OT-122. The LWB upgrade chassis (Carbon/Fiberglass) was OTW-5. It seems as the Custom Special was some with OT-122 and some with OTW-5. The Custom was apparently delivered with OT-122. The Turbo Optima Mid Special had OTW-5 , uncertain whether there was a mix of chassis types as with the Custom Special.

you've got the optima's now where's your ultima's, the ultima and especially the ultima pro were as big a deal to the 2wd class as the optima was to the 4wd class but i really doubt you'd ever be able to find an intact ultima pro......

Very cool: which paint scheme are you going.for. The mid customer special has 2 .One on the box and a different one in the 1989 kyosho catalogue. Personally I not a fan of the box scheme but the one in the catalogue is much nicer.

There is one more of the optima cars that is even more rare than any of the kits you have. It was the front wheel drive only optima. Was out in I want to say 1990 or 1991. A friend had one. There is also a super rare yokamo front wheel drive touring car also from the early 2000s also. Anyway you need to find the front wheel drive optima. You would be vintage rc God if you have one
