I had my Giant TCR Advanced SL frame, with Shimano Ultegra, and Giant SLR01 wheels listed for sale for 51 days. While some people may not feel that is a very long time, I have some interesting context to share, regarding previous bike selling experience. Notably with many Specialized Tarmac's I have owned in the past. Even a Specialized Venge.
In this video, I will share information reading Giant and the popularity of TCR's and narrow in a reason why it took me much longer than expected to sell my bike. An interesting consideration for anyone looking to buy and sell Giant TCR's.

Hi Cam, Firstly, thanks for the purchase. I’ll give you some backstory as to why I chose this bike to buy. When the TCR first came out in this frame set, I always loved the look and most importantly the weight. I previously owned a Propel with an ISP and when I saw this for sale I had no hesitations. All I had to do was get some spacers from giant for 35$ and raise the seat 2cm to fit my leg length. Finally, as I mentioned , I had sold my previous P5 and Propel as I wanted to fund my wife’s triathlon ambitions with a new P-series TT bike. Due to illness over the past few years I’ve been hesitant to drop a bundle on a expensive bike only to be sidelined all over again. This is the perfect price point for a performance bike that I can train on locally or race every now and then if need be. Thanks again for the bike, it’s everything I need, and I’m clearly visible on the road now!! Tom.

I had a Giant TCR with ISP in 2006.....one of the best bikes I have ever ridden even to today. Sold it eventually without too many hassles although it will always be a complication Vs normal seat post. The TCR just down from the flagship ISP model is the answer if you don’t want an ISP - TCR Advanced Pro......basically same bike with normal seat post . Awesome machine

Totally agree, ISP is just not user friendly at all. There a line where more performance, less weight or whatever gain doesnt compensate for how practical thing are. Another example would be pressfit vs threaded bottom bracket.

I just sold a Cannondale Synapse carbon rim brake in 1 day. Demand is there for used bikes but ISP is a sales killer. When you sell your bike, your potential buyers are limited to people with your saddle height or less. People don't want to cut their frames and ISP is integral to the frame. Standard seatposts come in huge ranges of up/down and fore/aft adjustment options, unlike seat mast toppers.

Giant released the 2021 models of TCRs about 5 weeks ago and giant have a carbon composite confidence warranty . Ride It. Race It. Don’t Worry About it: We’ve Got You Covered. And last is probably the ISP seat post but you can buy a seat clamp or spacers to get the right height.

I’ve just switched to 165mm crank lengths on recommendation of a bike fit and I’ve become a lot more efficient. It’s stopped my hip getting tight on longer rides so I’m able to go faster for longer

Me too. After years of riding 170mm cranks I switched to 165mm on the advice of an orthopaedic surgeon who is also a roadie. The reason was that I now have had both hips replaced and was getting a bit of pain on longer rides. His rationale was to limit hip extension and extension. Seems to have worked and also the occasional spot of knee niggle has disappeared. Amazing what a difference a couple of mm will make.

Sorry for irrelevant question, but can i ask you a question? When you adjust saddle tilt, how do you tighten or loose the “front” knob(or screw) if you use non cut-out saddle? It seems like allen key cant reach in there if you don’t use cut-out saddle. Do you just use thumb to tighten it? Is it possible to tight it enough, if you want a nose-down (tilt) saddle position? Id really appreciate for the reply.

Just FYI, I’m 5’9, 175cm with stocky legs. Changed to 165 cranks recently and noticed immediately the gearing difference (less leverage so its like extra tooth or two on front ring) and extra comfort riding in drops (less knee rise, more room). Both are good for me and, according to my Strava times, make me a fraction faster.

Yes, I wouldn't touch an ISP with a fifty foot stick. Two main reasons: 1. I tend to be a 'fiddler' making minor adjustments to saddle and seat post height 2. Travel. Packing up the bike in a bike bag for flying. I have an Evoc bag. An ISP would be impossible. A few side notes: I don't take my latest greatest very expensive disc bike travelling. There's no way it's going on a plane. I take my tried, tested and loved Cervelo R3 mechanical drive train and rim brake for that purpose. I think having a travel bike is a thing 2. I had a Fuji track bike years ago with an ISP. I hated it. It was so annoying and ended up with a Cervelo. Which will stay with me forever I'd say.

Giant big in Oz due to proximity to Tawain and the dollar exchange rate. Also having worked with Giant for a number of years amongst other brands I feel that Australian riders are less snobbish and given the proximity of European brands and the escalating cost of other brands. ISP always has and always will delay sales unless you find a clone of yourself in terms of fit....and out of interest who has the warranty on this bike as I recall you bought this second hand?

I don't think the ISP is that bad, because if you consider the bike size, probably 70~80% of people in the same size will be in the range of the ISP system, I believe is some buyers are just too worry about the small changing rage of the ISP and problems they will face while reselling

When I was shopping for bikes over the last few months, I specifically disregarded dealing with the giant ISP bikes. Too much for me to worry about, especially since I have a super long torso, I'd have to cut the ISP way short in comparison to the frame and eventually have a hard time selling it down the road. Trek is doing the same with the seatposts. About taking a longer period of time for selling your bike: I think there are proably more reasons: - overwhelming variety of offers in bikestores - ppl. who can afford to pay for a more advanced bike could prefer a new one or prefer a bike with less kilometers/miles on.

I had a very similar experience selling my 2017 TCR! I had the advanced pro 1 model that has an adjustable seat post. A few superficial scratches but everything was purely cosmetic. I had about 15 "interested" buyers who asked everything from "would you sell it without the wheels?" To "I'll give you $500 for it today" and finally sold it for my asking price 7 weeks after listing it. Super easy, buyer rode it around the parking lot and paid right then and there. I went from 172.5 to 165 on Tri bike and would only ever go shorter if I was to change. I'm 180cm tall. In the aero position it just feels so much better. Theres limited research into differences in crank length but it all seems to say that theres no downside in going all the way to 140mm, certainly when you consider you can likely get more aero. It opens up the hip angle also meaning less tight hip flexors. That would be more of an issue for triathletes running off the bike than for pure cyclists. I now have 165, 170 and 172.5 on 3 different bikes and its no really an issue going between them.

Nope, Giant isn't gonna do it. It's good if their flagship frames are hard to sell with the ISP, that means probably more new TCR ADV SL frames bought brand new if there are no pre-owned ones that suits the saddle height of the rider, or some would just downgrade to ADV PRO. Either way, its good for them.

I think this is a good thing for those wanting to pick up a bargain. Imagine coming across a heavily discounted bike that was new, did fit you (others discarded due to the ISP, but the cut was fine for you) and was fast and light... this is what I managed to do in 2015, and I have been riding it for 4 years. My circumstances mean I could not buy a $10,000 bike, but I did manage to get one that originally cost that much (was 1 year old at time of purchase) for $2200.

Cyclists are always suspicious of used carbon bikes especially if they've been raced. There's always the right buyer though. As for the shorter cranks I now ride 165 which has relieved me of niggling hip flexor issues. I've also had a bike fit from Neill when he was In Melbourne. @@cup_and_cone It's just common sense (and it is also obvious that it's gonna be harder to resell). Also, there are TCR models without ISP.

@@Dee-Ell Seems like common sense, but it's easy to overlook for people who don't do much bike traveling and aren't breaking their bike down into travel bags/boxes regularly (and I'm sure local shops won't mention it in their sales pitch). I was willing to live with any resale on cutting the seat mast, figured I'd keep the bike for a few years anyway and I'd just sell the frameset for minimum cost. Ironically, I also looked at Trek Madone's/Domane's with ISPs and never thought about it.

For me it would have come down to the rim brakes. My bikes are all disc versions now and I would never go back to a rim brake, even I purchased a low end commuter.

Buy advanced pro 0 (no isp) upgrade to dura-ace. Profit? I personaly don't think the bike brand change much. I own a propel defy and tcr because they are the best value around. I still have my old Tarmac and its still pretty good too even if I rarely take it off the trainer. Anyway change bike every year if you feel like it we all have our issues (I'm a bike hoarder I lost count 15+)

Giant do make a TCR Advanced without the ISP. It is the PRO model. Which is cheaper too. I haven't compared like for like in a shop, but I believe as you mentioned the SL models are supposed to be stiffer and lighter than the PRO models. Possibly cheaper carbon layup process in the PRO models also. Thanks for the video Cam!

I knew it when you first mentioned it took you 51days to sell it. Mine took almost 5 months to sell. ISP...."No resale, no problem" People are intimidated by it. I loved my TCR, but I had a lot of people look at it, but they would tell me that if it didn't have the ISP. Those that were aware, had me with s measuring tape in my hand too. Funny thing is the guy that bought mine did the same thing your buyer did, but 5 months?! I'll get a non-ISP TCR next time around

Giant produces "the other brand" as well. So actually it is to no concern to them if you follow the "Specialized Tribe" ( and donate mor of your money to be a member/follower) or just want to own something SPECIAL. ;)

oh dear Cam did you know that a purchase a Giant just because you purchase one and at the time you seem to enjoy the bike. Mine is a Defy though. So far i like it. Now about that seat post you were talking about i read the same story elsewhere and some other owners have had some strange experience with it. So now that you have sold your Giant..i might as well do the same thing ?...naah i'm not ready yet... look at this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eKqUktOilcrdfGg.html Cheers from Montreal Quebec !!
