Living in Canada may give you an idea what's like to live in Finland. I lived in Finland for about 4,5 years, it is a wonderful country except the language/ coldness/ darkness. I moved from Finland to Australia.

also when looking for an apartment there's many web sites where to look but the biggest sites are oikotie.fi and vuokraovi.com (or etuovi.com, depends on if you are going to rent or buy an apartment). on those sites you can put up a "watchdog" which notifies you if there's any new suitable apartments. good luck with the search!

One hell of a journey, indeed! Good to know that you can get by without knowing Finnish, though! Do you struggle at all?

Well, if you are sticking to Helsinki area, it's probably alright. And even in other cities it's possible to survive without fluent Finnish, of course. For instance Espoo is going to have English as a 3rd official language in a few years. Describing my experience would not fit into this message hehe. I completed a language course for 9 months in a local school and it did give me a sort of intermediate level to express myself in rudimentary ways, but it hasn't progressed much since then. Not to mention the school level language is a child's play comparing to reality (At least here in South Karelia). So when I hang out with finnish friends, they speak English even when I ask not to :) At home with my wife it's half English half Finnish. (Like you, I moved here for a woman). The biggest struggle for me is understanding finns. When I was in training at different companies and had to help customers, I could not understand over half of them at all. They talked too fast or mumbled, which is one thing you will probably notice. Finnish men/guys seem to mumble a lot more than women. (Maybe it's the same in UK?) Another observation is that some people have no idea how to slow down for a foreigner to understand them. They just talk to you as if you are a finn, and you end up nodding and guessing what they're saying :D I eventually went to uni in Finnish for 1 semester, but that's another story. And there's light at the end of the tunnel, it's a small group of people you might run into who speak so clearly that you can finally feel proud you understood 90% of what they just told you :D Also positive attitude helps. Many foreigners don't really seem that bothered for not being fluent after all. Perhaps studies/workplace is where your finnish will be put to the test the most.
