The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

It was in this position the players agreed to a draw, Kasparov said Lasker had lost his confidence and the commenters on Twitch livestream complained about the number of draws.

Yes, draw, but a very interesting game; unlike the recent world championship, which--in case anyone's forgotten--was nothing but draws (in the classical format, all of the first 12 games). And even after that, the "overtime" or "speedier" games weren't all that interesting either! This Lasker/Capybara game was better'n all of 'em. Can I get a witness??

#suggestion (I don't know if I'm doing this correctly, pertaining to your protocol; please forgive me if not): I suggest that you show us game #66 of the current Leela vs. Stockfish epic battle. The reasons are three-fold: 1. It was the game that had to be replayed, after Leela's internet dropped or something (it was originally scored as a win for Stockfish, but then the "tournament directors" decided otherwise); 2. Stockfish DID eventually win this game in the end, fair and square... and I don't believe you've showed one of Stockfish's wins in this struggle yet; 3. The game itself is very exciting, with a very exciting finish, given the 2 rooks vs. queen, etc.

In the game photo, Capablanca seems relaxed so they must be either posing or analyzing a game -- they're definitely not playing. Lasker is holding a white piece, so he is either capturing or placing Capa's piece (a bishop?).

@samuelbruyneel
@samuelbruyneel 3 жыл бұрын
6:17 "... take that, Dr. Siegbert Tarrash" I remember another game Capablanca played, which was analyzed by Tarrash afterwards, and Tarrash suggested a "better move" in a certain position. However in the era of chess engines, the engines have shown Tarrash has missed 1 line, and Capablanca actually played the strongest move.
@mr.s6661

It’s similar to how Johann Jakob Löwenthal comments on Morphy’s games throughout the Morphy saga, and usually misses important lines and suggests moves that are either easily refutable via modern engines or just straight out blunders. It’s a recurring theme in the Morphy saga, and actually quite funny whenever it happens
