Financialization of Water - Around the world, demand for water is exploding.
Financialization of Water (2019)
Director: Jerome Fritel
Writers: Jérôme Fritel, Patrice Des Mazery
Genre: Documentary
Country: France
Language: English
Release Date: December 10, 2019 (France)
Filming Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Synopsis:
They call it ’blue gold.’ Around the world, demand for water is exploding. By 2050, at least one in four will live in a country suffering from water shortages - creating ideal conditions for a new market…
Goldman Sachs, HSBC, UBS, Allianz, Deutsche Bank, BNP. Banks, investment funds and hedge funds are all rushing to invest billions of euros in anything related to water. A real monopoly of water has begun.
From California to Australia, from New York to London via Marseille, we investigate the financialization of water. New power relations are being established and access to water is being threatened.
It’s a battle taking place on many fronts: ideological, political, environmental, and of course, economic. The fate of nearly 10 billion inhabitants around the world depends on its outcome.

Water is a basic human right! I can not believe Margaret Thatcher Privatized a basic human right. I’m appalled like Elon musk said… Mother Earth is 70% water! I live in Canada 🇨🇦 where we have the worlds largest freshwater reserves so I shouldn’t mock. But I have an extensive knowledge on the subject because although we have so much we still have aboriginal reserves with no access to safe drinking water. My home town Gibsons has been overpopulating the community. As a kid we never had water restrictions. By my teens they started to have them every summer now they have emergency scenarios of running out of water . There are no water reserves there and as the population was growing more and more the demand becomes more and more. You get to a place where consumption becoming too much and aquifer has no chance at recharge, This is mismanagement and blatant ignorance because even I personally have advocated the issue. . The town spent over $100,000 on hiring a specialist in aquifers and their recharge to prove more water so they could keep building. They also drilled another well so the people would think they are out of the woods with emergency situations. Only if you know nothing about aquifers not realizing the new well is only drawing from the same underground water source. There is only one aquifer there. Political lies. As of this week they finally announced they were closing all and any new building permits . Hoping they focus on conservation and rainwater harvesting. I no longer live there . I’m on Vancouver island BC now. My property is supplied by an aquifer that is accessed through a well my water is filtered under my house with 3 filters and blue light sterilization. The filters are replaced when the 365 day timer goes off. . If I run dry in a drought I have to ship water into my reservoir Cistern just to get me through till the fall when the rains came back. So I use city water in the late summer . Coming from a rain forest we are aiming to do rainwater harvesting. My husband is certified for harvesting rain water and and storm water management as well no pun intended . I live in one of the worlds wettest climates 7 minute walk to the beach and I run out . What an irony.

Although I totally agree that water as a resource should be valued and used responsibly, the idea of financialization of water can not possibly be a good thing. For profit management of water will lead to disasters as it will hit all. Food will be more expensive for example. Also the comparison of water and diamonds is scary to me. Diamonds are expensive for no other reason then artificial shortage of it and the idea of water being treated like diamonds (imposed artifical shortage) is really really frightening.

Desalination is a process aimed at removing salt and other impurities from seawater, making it suitable for various purposes such as drinking and irrigation. The primary methods include distillation and reverse osmosis. In distillation, seawater is heated, and the vapor is condensed, leaving salt behind. Reverse osmosis involves forcing seawater through a semi-permeable membrane to separate salt from water molecules. Both methods require energy, and advancements in technology continue to enhance efficiency and reduce costs, addressing global water scarcity concerns. Therefore you can drinking it

We do rainwater harvesting for potable water and storm water management in BC my hubby was going to do it commercially. . I’m surprised people don’t think of other options . I heard desalination is very expensive. And thank you for sharing you info because I actually wondered about how it works.

39:48 healthcare has intrisic costs, for research, labour, drugs manufacturing etc... Water is a common resource available on nature, to which people need to treat (and often don't) and distribute in cities... Should not have such a high cost. Putting such high price on water you only cause market savings for already rich people, and poor people die of dehydration... Such a sad reality

Its also important to understand the commodification of water will lead to suppression of any techniques to create water like salt water to fresh water conversion using solar. They will probably even make it illegal to harvest rainwater
@Silks-
@Silks- 2 ай бұрын
Your concerns highlight a crucial aspect of resource management, but it's important to consider the broader economic and technological landscape. Historically, desalination has indeed been pursued when financially viable. As freshwater becomes increasingly scarce and its value rises, technologies like desalination are likely to become more economically attractive. Consider the analogy of oil extraction: Initially, when oil was abundant and easily accessible, there was little incentive to develop technologies for extracting oil from more challenging environments. However, as the easier sources were depleted, the price of oil increased, making alternative extraction methods, such as fracking, economically feasible. This transition was driven by market demands rather than by efforts to suppress technological development. It's worth noting that the management of water resources, including rainwater harvesting and desalination, is subject to a complex interplay of legal, environmental, and social considerations. While it's true that the commodification of water could lead to tighter regulations, this also opens avenues for innovation and investment in sustainable water technologies. The key will be in ensuring that such developments are guided by principles of equity and sustainability, rather than purely by profit. Your point about potential suppression of technologies is an important one, reflecting broader concerns about resource control and accessibility. However, the historical precedent with oil suggests that scarcity and rising prices tend to encourage technological innovation rather than suppress it. The challenge will be in managing these resources responsibly, ensuring access for all while promoting sustainable usage and innovation.

It would help if the activists understood that when there is a market theres a need for market efficiency (Im a farmer, I need to buy water; who has the cheapest supply to sell me?), and when there are market makers creating liquidity for increased efficiency (water bank so its available to the farmer when he needs it), they're going to profit. We need this to exist and to be regulated.

Extraction and consumption of natural ressources (not only water) needs taxed for regulation and a ressource based world economy (RBE) introduced for sustainability. The financial sector has already driven the world to the edge ...for capital profits. Tax - into oblivion - the filthy rich, banks and firms making exorbitant profits on non-productive capital investments. Redistribution of wealth for more equality is a desirable outcome as well.

Pretty disgusting. If prices are going to be assigned inevitably implemented as they are already, discounts should be offered to regenerative growers and those using this resource judicially. This creates an impetus and incentive for growers to move to sustainable/regenerative ag and could be amplified by a shift in subsidy focus from the "what is grown" (corn/soy/etc) to the "how and why" of crop selection and production. We need to put our growers first and provide needed support to sustain continuous land stewardship.

Water like food is a necessity, not a powerhouse option. I now live in Bulgaria, I drink and cook with the mineral water that there is plenty of here at no cost. Before I left England, I left the water co with their own extortionate bill, it is stupid that I was charged for what water fell into the gutter on the road outside my house, plus they seemed to want money for what rain fell on my roof as disposal and purification? I was using all that water at the time for washing and garden wich was totlly unmeasurable

nice video BUT, skips over a couple simple basic principles: water from the sky is free. Once you try to capture it, contain it, redirect or bottle - it is no longer free, though that in and of itself does not commodify water, ( that's for the exclusive purpose of TRADING RIGHTS). Second- can't keep, hold contain forever. Water needs to move, it needs to cycle or things will attach and grow within the water leading to limiting it's use (drinking, agriculture, power generation, etc. Third, there is a massive difference between DRINKING water, and fresh water used for agricultural, industrial, commercial purposes and some is just wasteful ~ Fracking to use an easy example. Four: Wetlands, swamps, forests, animals - the other users and filterers of water are vital and the TRADERS could give a fck about the biological needs of other organisms and systems on the planet that NEED the water cycle to survive. This is where these demon trader's counter argument's fall apart. Within their manufactured reality water can and should be traded, just like their cheap lives. In the outside world of reality - it makes absolutely no sense for the promoting of the sanctity of ALL life...
