We're going to test and find out if the Jowua Glass Roof Sunshade for Tesla Model Y or Tesla Model 3 really works! We'll be testing it out in the Los Angeles hot summer sun to see if it can help keep our Model Y Roof Glass cool. On an 85 degree (F) day in Los Angeles during mid-day sun, we see what an unprotected glass roof temperature reading shows (MOLTEN HOT) and then test again with the Jowua sunshade in place, and show you the results.

I live in Palm Springs, CA where the temperature has been over 110°F for the past week with a peak of 119°F a couple days ago. So you might say that the glass roof on my 2023 Model Y is a bit of a problem. I researched various options, ranging from ceramic tint to a wrap on the entire roof. Both solutions cost much more than I was willing to spend to correct Tesla’s oversight. I ended up buying a Vion sunshade which has a reflective layer. It cost me around $55. Works like a charm. Great fit, no sag, very little heat, and the color match to the interior is nearly perfect. Highly recommended.

I live in Hawaii and just got the ceramic tint all around the car, including the roof. It is supposed to cut out 80% of the heat...not even close. Does your sunroof shade block out the heat and keep the cabin cooler?
@richardcoughlin8931
@richardcoughlin8931 Ай бұрын
@@underworldevents265 Yes, it shades most of the sun and keeps the cabin less hot than it would otherwise be (I mean, we broke the all-time record of 124° last week). I leave it installed year-round now. It is a near perfect tan color match and looks like an ordinary headliner. At $59 it was a real bargain.

Unless parking in shade overnight between tests always start with the shade test first because mass acts as a heat battery. That is what passive homes take advantage of. Surfaces heat can cool quickly but the stored heat energy takes longer to change. Pointing that type of heat thermometer into the sun gives wrong readings.

Suggestion: Add large sheets of foil between the roof and the sunshade. The shiny side should face up. Some brands actually include a reflective material which attaches with velcro.

Wouldn't it make sense to get temps on the seat before and after where you'd sit and be the one feeling hot or hotter? I didn't go through all comments so don't know if this was asked and answered.
@guitar60253
@guitar60253 Жыл бұрын
I understand the cabin temp drop, but how was this even remotely close to measuring the glass temperature you started with. In one part you measured the glass the other portion you measure the shade. What was the actual glass temp with the shade??? Anyone alive can tell you if I lay a piece of cloth out in the sun and I lay a piece of glass out the glass will get hotter faster.
@rlc2978

😂 The glass is still facing the sun so it's temp is the same.. it's the difference the shades makes inside the car that's the point

The ideal shade would be outside on top of the roof but could be an issue with wind at any speed not to mention a road hazard to other drivers. So, all you manufacturers , get to work on a rooftop shade that stays in place would you.

I still don’t understand why it’s such a design flaw. It’s impossible to enjoy the car without a sunshade. Surely it should be built in and retractable?

My Jowua roof shade came in and installed easily enough, but my enthusiasm was dampened the first time I touched it getting into the car or driving and hitting a bump on the road. The little ledge on the clip is far too shallow to adequately support the shade and the spring tension provided by the shade itself is simply not enough to keep the shade seated against them. It falls on my head constantly while driving. Does anyone have a fix for this?

Couldn't you put that mirror tint onto the roof? the kind of tint that is good at blocking those harmful rays? Ceramic tint I think it's called? A mirror finish and the ceramic would probably block the most without physically covering up the glass. Personally I like driving with my windows open. if i owed a tesla, the windows would be down all the time anyway and in winter, here in Canada, it would be nice to have heat coming in. I'd only put a cover on so the air doesn't really have direct contact with the cold glass. I have a panoramic roof on my car and I personally hate covering it up.

I'm watching this just before heading out to take delivery on my new Model 3, and I'm very interested in sunshade options since I live in the south east where it smolders, especially in the late summer. I noticed that the material of your shade is translucent. Have you considered redoing the test with a more opaque shade? I'd be interested in what the differences would be.

Great video. I just installed shades in my Model 3 and am on the fence still... the glass roof is indeed just a cool thing even though you don't stare out of it... it's just a nice feature. That said, I installed shades as I was noticing on the super hot days that even with AC going strong the top of my head would still just feel a bit "baked" all the time.... the shade I got seems more opaque than the one you used and has a reflective coating as well so maybe they have improved (?)... My results are definitely a cooler feeling cabin on the positive, but also a bit "darker" and closed in feeling on the inside which is a negative to me. A positive is indeed cooler seats, and when I pre-cool the car it does take a bit less time to get to the temp I want which is nice. Another thing I have noticed is that music seems to sound a bit better in the car - and I like listening to loud music - so that was an unexpected positive. Time will tell if I leave these on all year or if it is just a summer thing.

Not too scientific. For the first case, you measure the temperature of the glass roof that is in direct sunlight (gets full effect of the radiant energy of the sun). For the second case, you measure the temperature of the sunshade that sits below the glass roof. The glass roof is factory tented and blocks much of the radiant energy in the sun light. Since less radiant energy is hitting the sun shade vs the glass roof, of course the sun shade will be cooler than the glass roof. Also, you only ran your test for about 20 minutes. I agree that the cabin will heat up slower with the sun shade vs without, but for most of us, our Model Y will sit in the sun for hours. If you allow for more time (say an hour), you'd notice that the ambient temperature with or without the sunshade will be the same. I do agree that the sun shade will allow for the seat surfaces to be cooler as it will reflect and absorb some of the remaining radiant energy that gets though the glass roof, but from a scientific point of view, sun shades don't keep the air temperature of your car interior cooler.
