hey Curtis I use perforated baking sheets and the problems I've discovered with stacking them especially with peas and sunflower shoots is that the roots, and the shoots on the peas, grow through the perforated holes and into the next flat which is a pain in the ass... I now put a piece of greenhouse plastic in the flat before putting my soil in, and then I put another piece of greenhouse plastic on top which keeps the moisture in and I get fabulous germination and The Roots don't grow through the holes. It also prevents the soil from drying out so quickly, I'm in a pretty dry climate like you are.

Hi Curtis and all other Farmer’s out there I am in Japan and I use the same flats over here they actually for rice transplants. When I use them I put a cut to measure paper ( something like a vapor barrier you use for roofing) in the bottom of the trays which keeps preventing any roots going further down. Helps especially when you stack em up for a few days. Hope that helps. As always great content in your videos - thank You so much.

Hey Curtis, Love the videos! I have been noticing that people have a lot of different opinions on what flats can be used for Microgreens. I notice that some suppliers don't inform what type of plastic they are using for their flats and some say it has to be #2 HDPE for it to be food safe but I have noticed that most the black flats (the flimsy ones) are either #5PP or #6PS - I'm wondering if you have an opinion or know what to keep an eye out for as far as types of plastic used on flats?

hey curtis, I am turning a lot in san marcos into a raised bed garden using drunken compost tonic for the bulk of my soil. (because that is wayyy too much money) luckily their is a fish hatchery close by to get freee fish emulsion for an extra kick to my soil mix. I will post pics in the comments once my raised bed caterpillar tunnels with plants. you rock big time and would not be doing this without finding your channel. im also on a war path to get off grid. solar/wind/natural gas.. yesterday the city of san marcos turned off my power to my tiny home and almost killed my dog. (I cannot bring him shopping or leave in my car because texas is hotttt) they screwed up my auto pay billing and blamed me and had no sympathy whatsoever. farm on!

QuicK Question!! I've been watching scores of microgreen videos and one question keeps coming up about Leachate and food grade containers. I guess ABS and many other plastics may leak small amounts of chemicals into the soil / plants. Also Seed seems to be an issue also, if there was a breakout of bacteria (Like E.Coli) which would spark a health department inspection how do you protect yourself from liability?

I'm about to be ordering some flats to start growing (building out a shed for growing) and selling microgreens. I would like to order those sturdier trays and not have to worry about replacing trays as they fall apart; how many trays would you recommend starting with? The deciding factor for me ordering these as opposed to the cheaper alternative is how many I will need to get started. If I need more trays than I have budgeted for these nicer trays I'll have to get these a little at a time as I grow my farm.

Hey Curtis, I recently stopped soaking my pea seeds. I find that they take maybe a day longer but they germinate much more consistently and eliminates the chance of turning some to mush and greatly reduces the chance of mold. You may have already done this and choose to soak for your own reasons.
