There are a lot of paths to success and it differs for everyone. Your advice is solid, just find something tolerable that pays the bills and still do the stuff you love on the side as a hustle right alongside a career. Sure, positive thinking and belief in luck helps but it won't pay the bills right now. Chasing after that unicorn career is like chasing after a unicorn. They just don't exist. So, what do you do? Make your own unicorn.

Totally agree with you... one doesn’t need to love the job instead find an aspect of a job which works for you or makes you happy. And then capitalise on that and keep looking for other aspects all along. World is not perfect, so if one keeps looking for perfection, that may lead to despair, which might derail the progress.

As someone that left Salesforce to pursue my passion in a completely unrelated industry only to return to Salesforce recently, I can vouch for your advice. While I loved pursing my passion and could've done it for free, I found out that, well, I really couldn't do it for free. Why? Because I want to have my future taken care of financially, to have a family and be able to take care of my parents when they are frail and need my care. I could continue to tough it out working as a gig worker in my dream job, but I could also see being back in Salesforce, a well paying niche that has a decent runway left, will make my life fuller. Living life to the fullest is not the same as working in your passion is what I learned. Many of us can probably find ways to work on our passion on the side while having a good steady job. According to poetryfoundation.org, "T.S. Eliot worked in the foreign transactions department at Lloyd's bank from 1917 until 1925 (from the age of 29 until he was 37). He punched in Monday through Friday (plus one Saturday a month) from 9:15 am to 5:30 pm. Like many Americans today, he only qualified for two weeks of vacation a year." I don't know if he'd be as brilliant a poet if he were to have to support himself by his poetry alone. Thanks for another piece of unconventional wisdom, David. Your wife married a wise man. :)

David - very sage advice! Some thoughts: - my parents grew up during the Depression (not 2008,; the 1930's). My dad remembers soup lines in his hometown in PA. When I started my first job in high school, my mom said to me, 'Don't expect to love your job. You might like or hate the work, the people you work with, your boss, etc. At the end of the day, it is a paycheck.' That advice has helped me cope with some tough situations. My parents' generation was happy just to get work and be paid. - I've had jobs that I hated, but tried to find coping mechanisms to get me through the day. I worked in Cambridge, MA for many years, and, at times, the drive on Memorial Drive, along the Charles River was the high point of the day. Sometimes, it was people that I worked with that helped me along. Sometimes, it was getting a good cup of tea, or a nice lunch. Other times, it was an activity outside of work that helped me cope - coaching soccer, taking ballet or Tai Ch'i, etc. You have done a great job of level-setting many career expectations. Always love to see your insights. Keep up the good work!

I can really relate to that advice.I am working in salesforce. For someone from CSE background I would have liked getting into development from scratch but I got stuck with salesforce by my company but still the money is good and I would like to continue this forward Thanks for your honest advice

Dave you nailed it. The longest job i have is 3.5 years every thing was shorter. The best job is studying B.S. & calling like it is.

I agree to everything you said but I should look for a good company which gives me stability during my initial years. Stability is imp.

It's crucial to get hired Asap to gain expertise and the skills you need to prove yourself in the industry. I see many unemployed young recent graduates wonder around clueless what they want to do with their life, even me as a computer science graduate have wondered around 3 years till I got my first job. If I were applied to as many jobs when I was in college I would've been hired. But I was scared and unconfident and I wasted a lot of time. I say first start with your portfolio now, don't delay it. I know it's not fun and hard work but this is how things work. And start doing projects, not one project, multiple different projects. I was happy when I fixed our neighbor's restaurant's website nearby for free on a budget friendly setup. I learned a lot from that project and I proudly added that achievement on my resume and portfolio. Also try freelancing on fiverr or upwork. And I know you got paid so little when you first start. But you will acquire a lot of knowledge and you'll have a perfect excuse for the unemployment gap in your resume. "Bro I was freelancing on upwork".

I used to look for the perfect career, but I eventually realized that I lose interest in everything. I chose something I had some interest in, and something I could do regardless of where I am at mentally: horticulture. I just have to show up and do the work. Before that I attempted to earn money on my creative interests, but I struggled to be productive, didn't enjoy it and didn't earn much.

Hi David! I'm in a confusing situation right now. I had applied to 2 companies for the role of a Salesforce Developer but they reached out to me and offered to interview me for a Salesforce Admin role since they wanted to go for senior developer candidates. I have one year of Salesforce Development experience as an Intern, should I accept these offers and their promise to phase me into a Jr. Dev role one year later? Or would this path take me off the track for a developer career? I have a bachelor's degree in CS, master's degree in IS, Platform Dev 1 and Admin certification. Your help would be much appreciated in this dilemma. And great job with the videos as always, keep them coming!
