The left-wing alliance in France has won the most seats in a dramatic election, dealing a surprise blow to the far-right party of Marine Le Pen.
Le Pen's National Rally was aiming to become the biggest party in parliament for the first time but was stopped by tactical voting and collaboration between her opponents.
On this episode, Niall Paterson speaks to Europe correspondent Adam Parsons about the shock result and to Philippe Marliere, professor of French and European Politics at University College, about far-left politician Jean-Luc Melenchon and whether he could be the new French prime minister.

Melanchthon's role ended when he prevented the RN from gaining a majority. All that remains is to lose support.

Not even really socialists, they are all different kind of social democrats from LFI to PS/Generation (well some people in the PS and Generation are not even soc-dem but just straight neo liberal like François Hollande or Aurélien Rousseau which was Macron's minister for a time)

Who the F is Philippe Marliere? a grumpy old prof who envies Melenchon's intellect and oratory skills (at best), and a disgruntled right winger who is devastated to see him win (at worst)... What a poor choice of a guest-commentator! My plumber could have done a better job!!!
