NOTE FROM TED: This talk contains a discussion of binge eating and suicidal ideation. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com...
Do you rely on addictions to food, alcohol, work or other survival tools to cope with anxiety or trauma? Do you hide your true self behind a mask? Are you ready to embrace vulnerability and thrive? In this deeply personal talk, Katherine Baldwin shares her experience of emotional overeating and binge drinking while working as a high-flying Reuters journalist, along with her journey of recovery, suggesting that when we are brave enough to connect to ourselves, to others and to the world, we find freedom from our traps and flourish.
Katherine Baldwin is a wellbeing and mental health speaker, a trauma-informed coach specialising in self-love, healthy relationships, addictions, #selfsabotage and burnout and the author of ‘How to Fall in Love’. Katherine shares her struggles with an #eatingdisorder, dysfunctional relationships, stress, imposter syndrome and breakdown, as well as the tools that helped her to transform, to support and inspire others to love themselves, grow in self-esteem and confidence, create fulfilling lives, find healthy love, and achieve their full potential while staying well. Through her work, she aims to break the #stigma around mental health and addiction and inspire people to live authentically and wholeheartedly.

“Your flourishing is welcome. More than that, it’s essential.” I love this statement so much! I may have to steal this as an affirmation. Wonderful talk Katherine. So engaging, inspiring and articulate and full of good advice and guidance on how to genuinely appreciate ourselves as individuals and make our mark in this world through courage and connection to self and others. Thank you. I’m sure I will return to this countless times.

Riveting! So vulnerable. I think it must have taken an enormous amount of courage to say these things in public. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

She articulated this human experience so well. Going through a dark time, or some call it a dark night of the soul, is a profound growing experience. If anyone out there reading this needs it, there's a book called 30 Days to Reduce Depression by Harper Daniels that I liked, small and taught mindfulness exercises.

I so well know the binging and fear feelings from all the crazy stories we tell ourself that are so far away from reality. Thank you for the courage Katherine to stand on stage and share such a vulnerable part of your life - successful from outside and so fragile inside.
