“I was encouraged and on fire for the Lord and I felt a call to become a Presbyterian pastor and I also knew that I was gay, and that’s a paradox if ever there was one, and I had to figure it out.” In his talk David Norse, the first openly gay man to be ordained as a Presbyterian Pastor in Philadelphia, follows his journey from around the campfires at church camp, to Woody’s gay bar, to becoming a pastor at Broad Street Ministry. He illustrates and debunks the use of Scripture to exclude LGBTQ people from the church, and his personal story of how he reconciled being a gay man and also being Christian. From the societal shift to support same sex marriage within the church to the revolution of the Christian identity and LGBTQ identity coming together, David invites us to ask questions and challenge what we know and believe about God and the LGBTQ community.
David Norse is the first openly gay man to be ordained as a Presbyterian Pastor in Philadelphia. An Oregon native, Norse pursued personal wholeness through the intersection of his Christian and LGBTQ identity. David is a graduate of Lewis & Clark College and Princeton Theological Seminary and has served as Pastoral Associate at Broad Street Ministry since September 2013. In his work, Norse challenges the narratives that cut communities off from wholeness and thriving. In so doing his work extends radical hospitality to the most vulnerable adults in Philadelphia.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

He is following his feelings. That’s a lot of blood on his hands. Because God will judge not just on how he is composing his own gospel but a lot of blood on his hands from the way many people are receiving the message. May God open ears and eyes to see and hear and show them the truth. I’m not judging anyone but I will say to find a spirit filled church that know how to pray in the spirit and cast out whatever keeping bondage. Satan is very real and I can see the jezabel spirit flowing in that place deceiving my heart just aches because I know there’s people in there that are genuinely seeking Gods face and dont know how.

There are only two kinds of people in the end: Those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, "Thy will be done." C. S. Lewis When we see or read Scripture through the eyes or soul of men, we get religion. But if we read Scripture through CHRIST we get the truth. Billy Graham said once, when he was asked, "What's wrong with society, is that it wants to make GOD to its image, instead of it been to the image of GOD. At the end, man's religion is man making GOD to its image. And at the end what really counts, is going to be when we go before THE LORD. GOD bless

@Laura Streeter If I didn't had a soul, I would consider what your implying. So how can we prove that there is no GOD? And, do people have souls? Or, are we just biological chemicals and matter? Are we just a bunch of million of cells put together randomly? Does the solar system is just a randomly group of celestial bodies out there with no purpose, just going around? Everything that exists has a purpose, other wise it would not exist. But coming back to human beings. Are we just a creatures that pop out of nothing without a purpose? Trying to find GOD outside the Bible?! Why does everything in existence has a purpose? And who made it? Why those the planet need four seasons to support life? Why do some animals as soon as they are born they do certain things? Who gave them or put their instincts in those animals? And they all and everything else has an order, otherwise it would not come to been. Who arranged all of the nature around us? Was it all spontaneous and came to be on its own? And if so, why isn't their another planet in our solar system that can support life? What kind of proof does some need of GOD? The proof of GOD is within us, we bear his image. Whether we choose to believe it or not. And that's another proof of HIM and HIS image of HIM. We are free to believe in HIM or not. That's why in the ancient world some men would declare themselves gods. That's why we have the Greek mythology amongst other myths of different cultures since the beginning of human civilization. Isn't weird that since the beginning of civilization some men felt themselves as been as gods? Why was that? And even now some people feel themselves as gods? Looking for evidence of GOD outside the Bible, just look in the mirror, and ask your self. Why do I exist, what made my body to have a perfect composition of cells that they know what their doing and each one knows it purpose? How is that possible? And we were given freedom to believe in GOD or not. When some refuse to believe that there is no GOD. It is granted to them, and they don't believe. If something does not exist, why argue that it doesn't exist? The things that don't exist do not exist we don't even acknowledge them, cause they simply don't exist. Why do I believe in GOD, cause I know HIM. Like I said in the beginning, if didn't had a soul I would consider what was implied about GOD not existing. GOD bless you.

If only I could find an accepting SDA church, sometimes I feel like I have to choose between my bisexuality and God. [EDIT: To all the self-proclaimed Christians telling me to choose between my identity and my faith, I hope you know you’re the reason why so many of younger people don’t go to church. You make it hard to worship God in an environment where people decide to make it their business to judge. Leave that job to God.]

I am bi and Christian. Having struggled with the same "contradiction," I can tell you it is no easy feat to come at peace with (even I still struggle with it every now and again). All my life I have grown up in a Baptist church and have been told the same things that, no doubt, some person will reply to my comment with. All essentially rules and none talking about the love of God. When my home church found out, very recently, I had a girlfriend they attempted to reach out to "pray for me" and have contacted my parents. My parents are, obviously, against it but still love me. They made it apparently clear that they would never accept it and that breaks my heart (but they still love me of course). However, all I can think about is how happy she makes me and that they don't see my happiness because they only see our outward appearances. At college I have found a, somewhat accepting, church and we attend regularly. I have encouraged her to come with me to our college group and, despite the potential prejudice we could experience, she still continues to come with me because she loves me and wants to learn. I write this all out to show those that it is possible and to give encouragement. Don't give up when times seem tough, God always has a plan for everyone.

Historically, Christians have not been the most supportive we could've been towards the LGBTQ+ community. As children of God, we are all created in his image. It's sad that many in this community have commited suicide for not feeling God loves them. We need to show them, regardless of if you agree with their choices, that God loves them as he created them and that he doesn't hate his children.

I am sad and sorry for you that you felt not accepted or loved. But this man lies and a lot of people don’t understand the truth about God and that is that he loves everyone most importantly sinners, as we all are. God does not hate gays or anyone else. God is love and God cannot hate. He gave his son up to die a gruesome death so that whoever believes in him has everlasting life! John 3:16. I am a sinner but just because I believe in Jesus, God sees me as righteous, saved and forgiven. Maybe you didn’t understand that, or maybe just reading these comments makes you think you are not loved or accepted, but the truth is that most of us may not know how to say it, or most of us can’t understand Gods love and compassion for each and everyone of us. But a true friend does not let a friend fall off a cliff, they want to save you. We have to tell you the truth so you can turn away from the cliff Nd walk in the right path to be saved

Dear comment section... The ability to read does not make you inteligent... I never think I am right in anything, but hope. If you say, that the Bible is God’s word but you do not consider that it was written down in the past by people who lived at that time in a culture that was different than ours, you are not considering that it was written in other language, culture where words did not meant the same. Have you ever learned language? Have you ever translated a text that seemed that it meant more in the other language or it means more in yours? Have you ever go across a book in a library or bookshop what meant a little bit different for you than some one other? We are different, we learnt in different places and different times. How could we understand fully God’s word if we are still not understanding God’s created world?

elijah moore Have you ever learned neurobiology from the Bible? It has not described ever so you should have not. It is not a science book, but science is trying to understand God’s creation. I wrote we are not understanding FULLY the world God created and due to we are not able to connect all of its aspect to His word. The Corinthians 14 is about preaching and as interesting as it is, it never even mentions the Bible as the source of the preaching. The letter is about how not preach using only your faith but preach with knowledge and thought. It even says that it is better to preach a few word with meaning than many coming only from faith. This part of the Bible also has the bias that women should not preach because of their lack of knowledge that they should learn from their husband. If you look at it at that way, it can even mean women should learn to be able to preach at that time. So if we see this as it was written at a time where women were not able to educate themselves it is not even biased. Interesting enough, I looked up the letter (Corinthians 14) in my language and read 2 different translation, both of it translated the verse (Corinthians 14 33) the way that the English author world would mean God as a causer instead of a writer and I deffinitely can see that in the English translation also, but I have not seen it as it is out of context.

William Dionicio im sorry but being raised a christian ive heard all of this before. the only thing these words have caused me are anguish, shame, guilt, anxiety and made me feel horrible for trying to be my authentic self. this is a horrible message to be spreading to people because you know what, we're still people. we're living breathing humans, and homosexuality isnt any "desire" nor should it be treated as such. if thats the case then heterosexuality as well should be treated as desire. i have chosen to stop believing because of people like you, making me feel out of place and uncomfortable standing in a church. so please shut up, because those words will never solve any "problem" you think there is.

This comment section is scary. If the context is right it clarifies those scriptures. The origin is important because the original language wasn't as specific as modern English. There is nothing there that specifies it as specific or exhaustive. If the implications of detail are correct he IS correct. The gospel accounts were literal but the parts from the Torah and Revelation etc are not. If your going to try that noise explain the Song of Solomon. What God intended of marriage...could be a reach. But he is right.. partnership is mentioned before marriage specifics. If it is not said in clarity and specificity it is better to err on allowing a blessing then to pull it. Seperating wheat from tares in a harvest is God's job not ours. This is a grey area. Only the Holy spirit in the form of revelation can discern. But that kind of reveal is individualistic. This is something for each to push into the Lord themselves to affirm. And not hold against others even if you actually DO know better. God's hand is doing multiple works in many people through this mess. Seek him give Glory to God regardless. Even if you error. Seek. Again seek more preach less. This is not a lesson teachable by human means.

Vojtěch Ptáček if you want more emotions like happiness and depression and anger to block your view of God then just wait for the Antichrist to come and he’ll be your favorite little genie in a bottle. Or are you looking for Joy, Sorrow, Justice, that’s what God “accepts” if that’s what the answer is that you’re looking for. It’s not wrong to have the emotions that I listed above, but to let them take control of you, that’s wrong. The Joy… are states of mind that mold you and are healthy for you as a person, which is what God wants to bring you closer to Him. Homosexuality is an emotion not a state of being; emotions are like a vapor moving here and there, or like shifting shadows, never a solid foundation.

@@celebrimborposting9251 Can you explain to me what this scripture means? Is this scripture not clear as day about how God see's homosexuality? Romans 26-27 "For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error."
@johnmark150
@johnmark150 4 жыл бұрын
@@happythoughts7792 Sure, no problem. This is a passage about the consequences of idolatry, and refers to men who were already with women, and then they left their women, and went with men. This is more like adultery than homosexuality, since it is referring to men who were already with women, and then started leaving their women to go with men. So it is not referring to men going with men, but condemning men who were already in a relationship with women and then left them to go with men (ie. adultery). Jesus never spoke out against homosexuality, but He did speak out against adultery hundreds of times. The dishonorable passions refers to the people who knew God, but they did not glorify or honor Him as God, nor were thankful. So this passage is NOT about homosexuality, it is about people who don’t glorify God and who don’t like to retain God in their knowledge (Romans 1:28).

Maybe it’s too simplistic to just tell people to stop feeling the way they’re feeling. I do believe God does change us as we get to know him and many of those things that we once desired will fall away. If someone struggles with sin, it is usually condemnation that keeps them stuck in that pattern. It’s not that sin is of no consequence, it’s just that within ourselves and our strengths we lack the ability to change our desires. Only the spirit of God can do that. I remember when my dad felt so condemned because he could not stop smoking. He played the guitar in church and didn’t even want to go on the pulpit to play because he felt so bad. God did eventually set him free from smoking after getting prayed for at church service one night and he never desired to smoke after that. The pastor would always call him to come up and play even tho my dad felt unworthy. I’m so grateful the pastor did that.

But no one has had their orientation changed as a result of prayer or any other intervention. Well-meaning Christians have often promised on God's behalf that the spirit of God will change them, but such teaching has not only failed, it has consistently done harm. That's why people have had to rethink this issue and more and more have come to the same conclusion as the speaker here.

When God noticed that Adam was without a partner, He just didn't create any kind of partner . He created a woman for him. He was very definite and very clear. He didn't create a woman and a man for Adam to choose which of them he would want to go with. He had made that decision alone. And the decision wasn't ambiguous, neither was it left to Adams emotional feelings. And that wasn't for Adam alone, all the animals were also male and female. The Dr was not fare to the scriptures. He didn't do a good exegesis, he allowed the tide to influence his interpretation of the word of God.

The context for that verse is that the Pharisees were jealous and trying to trap Jesus because they KNEW that the woman had committed adultery. I get what you mean though, blindly spreading hate against the LGBT community probably isn't from the Spirit and believers that see this and casually leave judgmental comments aren't "loving their neighbors as themselves." But it also states in the Bible to rebuke your brother when they do something that is clearly not of God. This is especially severe if he claims to hold the status of a pastor(Those who teach will be judged more severely) James 3:1. I'll be blunt, you can't look at this one dimensionally. Only choosing to follow one verse and ignoring the rest of the Bible in this case means that we willingly downplay the importance of holiness. I think some believers here clearly understand the path where this man is headed and are warning him in the "love your neighbor as yourself" fashion. They're sticking up for God when the majority of the world hates God's morals.

I love the story of the professor using Genesis to support the LGBTQ community. Often we are taught the letter of the law but not the spirit of the law.
