We all need a Comfort Subject, it's like a comfort food or comfort drink.. Something to give us confidence and remind us of our first love.

What is your comfort subject? Something you can paint and gives you a feeling of a warm hug! 🤗

You are such a wise person! Comfort should not be something to be ashamed of. We all need to push ourselves out of the comfort zone and yet returning to familiar subjects can help if you are having a block. My comfort subject is my beloved dog who died nearly a year ago and yet I feel I can never do him justice, just as I can never bring him back. My heart is broken and it is bittersweet painting him but it does help me to feel near him for a while. Your drawing of your wife is exquisite - she must be a beautiful woman! Thank you for your Tip Tuesdays. Great idea.

I am enjoying Tip Tuesday as it’s good to be able to learn something, especially if I don’t have time to watch a longer lesson which I also enjoy. I find it comforting to paint subjects that I am fond of such as flowers, my garden, my grandchildren and more generally autumn colours.

My comfort subject would be portraits, of humans or animals.. I love that Tip Tuesday format idea.

Hi Eric, I've noticed the less than full satisfaction you've experienced in several recent efforts. Your self-analysis is 100% right on target, you are a great artist my friend and portraits, wet street scenes, mist, etc. are your warm fuzzy, ala comfort (latte) subjects. And it is a great tip for all of us to find and enjoy our own particular comfort subject(s). Just be yourself and enjoy that "latte" one more time, all the time!

Tip Tuesday chats are great!! Will follow it! My comfort subject is always landscapes, specially rural landscapes in pastel or watercolor, pen and wash... Thank you Eric !

I push myself into lots of different subjects but for a quick successful watercolor it will be a landscape with a barn or a simple house. I’m ready to retry a wet urban scene and I love doing portraits even if I’m not that great at them. Thank you. I love the long tutorials.

Great idea Eric. Please continue with it. Really enjoy hearing you share your thoughts with us. Would really enjoy a question and answer live stream. Maybe one Saturday instead of doing live painting just host a q&a live discussion? Just a thought. :) As far as my comfort subject, I think would be simple loose landscapes from imagination, for now at least. I do find it not so comfortable when my paintings come out unsuccessful though.

Wow I did not realize I was doing a comfort subject but every time I felt stuck or afraid to move forward, I started painting trees. I thought I was having setbacks, but after your video, I feel like they are pauses because I am painting something I am comfortable with. Thank you so much for that insight.

What a perfect tip, thanks so much Eric. Whenever I'm sad or frustrated, I paint a sky, sometimes 2 or 3. Painting the sky is definitely my comfort subject, thanks so much for reminding me :-)

Birch trees, they are white but when I paint them they have every color of the rainbow in them. If you look closely at them sometimes they have blue or pink or cream and tan depending on the light, never the same. They also remind me of my grandfather's cottage where I spent my childhood. So trees any trees.

Just found you. I’m so blessed. I just started on watercolor painting and am binge watching your videos. They give me much inspiration and setting the path I can explore for a start. Tuesday is my least fav day of the week but now Tip Tuesday changes that. Thank you Eric.

Great segment, Eric. My comfort subject is painting a candid face of children and their gestures. Their forms are not posed and their faces are innocent, showing what they feel. Your are a great teacher!

there are 2 things that are comfort subjects for me: 1 is flowers, the other is throwing a whole lot of colors wet on wet on paper with no goal in mind, letting it dry, and then painting what I see.

Your Tuesday Tip video is a terrific idea. How sweet of you to share your feelings about drawing and painting your wife. I know what you mean about “ comfort painting” . Mine used to be 🌸 flowers . Always could get that comfortable feeling and had the confidence in it. But we go to other subjects sooner or later. Since I’m now 83, you know I’ve painted a lot through my lifetime. Right now I’m liking the street scenes you paint. My favorite of yours is Hollywood Blvd. and the rainy day paintings. Can’t wait to see one this Sat.eve. Sorry this is so long.

Thanks for raising the question, I love looking at sunrise, sun set, soft sunlight over trees, or even snow scenes, for it may be a watercolour, acrylic or even a photo. They keep my attention, my thoughts drift away, like you said they give me a warm hug.

My warm subjects are portraits... but mostly of people who have some special expression or character, and they make it easier and more enjoyable to draw. But what that special something is, I don't know.

My comfort subject is a 3D looking ladybird. I paint and draw them without any reference during testing new brushes or pencils. Even when I have to wait for something I start doodling it on pieces of paper. My ladybugs are always perfect and they give me a great joy.

Café Watercolor - I'm very surprised to hear that Eric!! I actually did my first one as a trial after studying your demos and it went quite well so I don't know why the criticism. Please don't feel obliged to do more if you don't feel comfortable-you have masses of followers to please :)

I never really thought about that before, but listening to you talk about it I can see how having a comfort-subject and reverting back to paint it often can be a very useful tool/method for centering my painter self and remembering the why of why I paint. I already do this for drawing (without realizing it could be called a comfort-subject) and now I will be doing it for my watercolor painting as well. Thank you!

Eric, I love the idea of short tips like this and look forward to more. I'm at a frozen period of time with my art. I find myself not knowing what I want to paint at this time. So I'm simply splattering/dropping paint on the paper to see what comes. It's helping me. For now.

I think painting an improvised meadow in the mountains might be it for me... though that maybe is less a "comfort subject" and more just what I can do when I don't want to think about it too hard.

I'm trying to learn painting landscapes. I try and try painting to get the results I'm looking for and when I get tired experimenting and pushing myself hard, I take a break for a day or two and then I paint Birds, flowers or fishes which I'm comfortable with. Good to listen this from you it makes me feel that I'm not the only one who face such situations 😁

Love the idea of your Tip Tuesdays. Wish I could say what my comfort subject is but it's rare that I draw anything more than once so maybe I don't have one. Maybe it's detailed grass/weed vignettes. I've drawn a lot of those :-)

I am too new to watercolor to have a comfort subject but I can certainly see how it would be helpful to have one and to draw / paint it when you are feeling less confident. Thanks for you videos - I learn a great deal from them. I ordered the lamp you suggested and it just came in yesterday so I am excited to paint under it as I think it will be a great help! It's like the 747 of desk lamps!
