I thought the harley rake was the king of soil prep work,then i seen this machine,wow,what a gem!The versatility of this machine from rough grade to finish,and seeding,outstanding!
@lawnranger3432

The Harley Rake (power box rake) is still by far the best for leveling dirt for a new lawn. This machine will be fine in simple jobs, but if the ground is hard, wet, or very compacted, this machine would have a huge challenger ahead of it. I've been seeding and leveling for 35 years. When all else fail, the power rake will still get the job done.

I love this! I know a custom home builder and he could care less about the grass. He goes to a seed mill and gets a cool season mix and throws it down covers it with straw and calls it a day. Every once in a while he will sod a place if he gets tight on time.

Great video as always, brother! I have used a light coat of peat moss on top of seed rather than straw. It helps retain moisture, it covers the seed, and it adds some organics to the soil. I have had great success with that. A little more pricey, but I know whats in it for the most part. Looking forward to a new year of your vids for sure!

They didn’t do quality grading at my house. My sod is rough as a cob. Gaps between the sod rolls, tree root mounds all over the backyard. For some reason my utility boxes are positioned on hills. All the other lots are relatively flat but I have these hills on each corner. I’m going to use them to my advantage and have an elevated and planted landscape area. I hope I can turn this negative aspect of my lawn into a positive. I had a tree in the front yard but it was beat to death during construction. I had to have it cut it and the stump ground down. Now I have a slightly elevated mound in the middle of the yard yard with sod that I put down covering it. I know it is going to have problem soil for a while. The roots and chips from the stump grinder will be degrading for years sinking as it rots. I’ll get it there it’s just going to take time.

There are NO residential providers up my way that take the care you do to install a lawn. You'd laugh (or choke) if you saw what most consider "graded". Why not hydroseed? Addresses some of the moisture retention and runoff issues without the risks associated with straw.

Hay/straw worked great for us when you could find it. We ran it through and straw chopper and it looked really nice until the wind would blow it away. Great video, Pete. I thought you had seeded that entire yard including the edges in your last video. That ABI Force will cover the seed over to get seed-to-soil contact. If you are throwing down more seed in this video aren't you going over the 10lbs/1000 rule? Are you also putting peat moss over the top to hold in the moisture? That's an awful lot of yard to keep irrigated by hand. It might cost more, but it's a good time to put in an underground irrigation system now. Keep up the great work, Pete!

NICELY DONE! It's a pleasure to watch a vid where the person doing the talking actually knows what the he!! they are talking about. I'm currently doing the prep (by hand unfortunately) for a new lawn at my new house. It's only about 4K, but the soil is terrible (rocky red clay... I'm up in the north Georgia mountains). The first tilling is done, lime and OM added and some rough grading complete. I plan to till again, but it is so wet it's nearly impossible. I think we have had only two days in the last two months without rain! This will be a seeded bermuda grass stand using a blend of Blackjack, Maya and Yukon. Should be nice when complete. If a family's "budget is tight" is the excuse for not having enough for the yard, then the family spent more than they could afford for the home. By definition, if a new homeowner wants a yard for a new home, then the expense for putting in the yard should be included in the home price to determine what the family ACTUALLY can afford. This is in no way a slam on GCI Turf or his in-laws, nore his great DYI videos. But, it's so common that people say they built/purchased a new home but can't afford the yard. And the homebuilders are doing a disservice to selling homes without any developed yard, in their attempt to make it appear a home is more affordable.
