In classic Daytona form, a great finish to the end of the Great American Race. On one side you have Dale Earnhardt, the veteran gunning for his sixth Winston Cup title. On the other there is Dale Jarrett, a strugling driver with only one victory under his belt. The two battle it out for two laps until Jarrett (with his father calling the race from the booth) take his first of three Daytona 500s

One of the greatest "calls" in NASCAR history, it was nice to hear his son mention The Daytona 500 his father should have won in 1963, what a proud moment in the life of a really classy guy, Mr. Ned Jarrett!

Man, they just don't make announcing like they used to. On that last lap, when Ken Squier says "This is the finish", it's done in just such a perfect way. Perfect tone, perfect wording. Perfect way to set up Ned for that finish. Great race. Go DJ.

I never was a very big fan of Dale Jarrett, but I still think this was one of the most magical moments in racing. It still gives me goosebumps today to hear Ned call his son home. You really have to give Ken Squier and Neil Bonnett kudos too for stepping aside and allowing Ned to bring him home. Ned typically didn't call them home as Squier or Jenkins did, but really, there could have been no one better to make the call this day.

In my mind the best part of Ned’s call came just after the ‘93 finish after you hear Ned clapping, & Ken Squier congratulating him, he utters the words that you can barely hear over the engine noise in the background “Man, did I teach him to drive that race car!” Quote of a truly proud father that guaranteed would tell you that Dale’s win meant more than all of his wins in NASCAR. As a side note to also solidify what a class act Ned is & always will be, the following week @ Richmond Ned said he went to go apologize to Dale Sr. as he felt bad all week like he had thrown Sr. under the bus because of his call rooting for Dale to win on national tv when he felt he should’ve been an unbiased announcer. Ned apparently said, that Dale first congratulated Ned for Dale’s win then took off his sunglasses with a real stern & serious look on his face, looked Ned straight in the eye, pointed his finger at Ned & said “Ned don’t ever apologize for supporting your kids & don’t ever forget…That I’m a daddy too.” Ned years later stated that it changed his perspective of Dale Sr. as a person & not just the hardcore race driver he saw him as, & also stated he quietly shed a tear & remembered that moment when Dale Jr. won his first 500. 👍

I read the book that mentions this win. Dale Jarrett woke his wife up at 4 AM the day Jimmy Macar built the whip and said I have the chance to win the Daytona 500 and she said what makes him sure and he said "If I go to Daytona and win well it's because that cars supposed to win. But if I go to Daytona and lose well then Dale Jarrett can't drive".

1st of 3 Daytona 500 wins for Dale Jarrett. 1996, and the last Daytona 500 of the CBS era in 2000, were the other 2. As for the owner Joe Gibbs, as of 2013, this is his lone Daytona 500 win. (Of course that could change) Dale Earnhardt finally won the Daytona 500, for the only time, just 5 years later.
