Good luck wishing you the best Charlie. Love to see you take the yanks to school. Most of the trade especially in California has been bastardized. Their all only block layers and lickem and stickem stone. True fireplace men are a dying breed.

As you was building that "peer" I was thinking what's the fucking point of that with just a couple of brick ties holding up bricks stack on top of each other with no bond into the main wall. But was thinking I'm just a Carpenter & Joiner so maybe you brickies know something I don't. Turns out we're both on the same page & neither of us think them peers are worth a wank LOL

@WombleUK It certainly reduces the strength and stiffening effect of the "pier" when it is built like that. Structurally speaking the garage is a rectangular box in shape, which is fairly strong overall, but its strength is reduced slightly by having the open end (where the entrance will be) The longer walls could easily be reinforced to reduce lateral loading, and to increase lateral-flexural integrity......or even better build the piers on the outside on the longer walls- this also gives the added bonus of more space internally. The "piers" on the rear wall are only there to resist thrust loading (from the roof..!) and are less effective if built as shown. So perhaps your view on the usefulness of the piers maybe correct after all..😁😁👍

@@davebloke829 Indeed so, they only really serve two purposes structurally, to resist thrust loads from the roof (depending on the roof type) and to assist with lateral stability.

@martin2466
@martin2466 4 ай бұрын
@mattalford389 Not entirely a complete waste from a structural viewpoint. However, their effectiveness is reduced when built with mechanical ties - rather than being bonded into the walling.

I did a load of blocklaying DIY. 3 walls back of the garden and then a 7m x 4m garden room. It's actually good fun if the weather is nice (I never did anything if it was wet or cold). I certainly wouldn't do it in the colder months and my build, with the roof now on, hasn't moved forward since mid November. It's a therapeutic thing to do but you have to be a proper hard grafter to do this for a living!
