Hi everyone!!
I just wanted to clear up a few things about bonding chinchillas: it isn't always this easy. In fact, I'd say most of the time, it's a pretty difficult process and often the bond doesn't form. The things I did with Finn and Knox I think gave them the best chance at developing a relationship, but their unusually sweet and laid back personalities helped a lot! One thing that I believe also helped that I didn't mention in this video, is the fact that Finn probably felt comforted by Knox after being still so new to our house. I think it's easier for chins to bond when they take comfort in each other, which is why having them in a neutral and unfamiliar place is important.
Hope you all enjoyed watching our bonding process, I can't wait to share more with you about Finn, as he is an incredibly smart chin 😱 I'm interested in attempting to train him to do things and interact with puzzles!
Don't forget to consider joining out Patreon for Behind the Scenes, livestreams, exclusive postcards, and more! (August's merch and sticker pack is all Finn! 🤍) This coming Tuesday 8/22 is our August Patreon Livestream and Thursday is our Top Tier stream, hope to see you there if you decide to join us! ❤️ (I'll also be revealing some other big news.... 👀)

Seen a lot over the last few years. With rescues, you never know what kind of trauma they might be carrying that can affect their bonds with other chins. Even now one of our pairs is puzzling us. Most of the time they get along swimmingly, but some nights they will actively chase each other and pull fur. So far neither of them was injured, and the next day, or if we take any measures to stop them from fighting, they'll make a point of sticking with each other and acting like they would never ever think of fighting, grooming each other and jumping into a bath that is way too small to properly fit both of them together. But of course, this doesn't exactly put us at ease, especially if we are not at home for a weekend and wouldn't be able to stop them if they chose that exact time to fight.

is Finn just really mellow? I can believe how he lets you hold him, put his little sweatband on him , 🥰, sit on the counter without running off? It's so hard to imagine my guy ever allowing any of those things to happen. 🤣

I adopted a bonded pair from a rescue centre here in the UK. They’d were 4 & 5 years old, and we’ve had them for 2 years now but they started fighting. My big one was pulling fur out of my little one and yet they also had two of everything from the start. Unfortunately I feel terrible but have had to separate them permanently now. My little one misses his buddy and yet my bigger one seems happier on his own. Also sad as both are laid back and sweet boys.

Sometimes animals just seem to bond really easily, but I agree that things often don't work out so swimmingly. Sometimes it can be a *really* long and even unpleasant (in the sense that it's distressing to see our beloved pets stressing out and potentially even getting into fights, and the stress that comes with all this) project to introduce these kinds of animals to each other. I have been watching chinchilla channels lately, and it really seems like they are quite similar to degus in many ways. I don't have experience with chins personally (maybe some day!), but I have a lot of degu experience, and everything here sounds really familiar. In fact, all of this advice would have been great for me to know when I first started keeping them and had to do my first intros when my first degu lost his brother - it's very much in line with what I've found works now. It's great that you're being explicit about the process and how people should not maybe expect as easy a time. One can always hope, but it's best to prepare for a prolonged struggle. I advice people that (for any social rodents), they should be prepared to house the animals separately indefinitely, as it may take a long time or may even simply not work out. If there is no practical way to have two full living areas with all necessities, getting a second animal for introduction purposes may very well be setting yourself up for a really stressful situation... Another piece of advice I find important is that even if things seem bleak for now, never lose hope! I've seen animals that totally hated each other for a long time come around at some point. When there's fighting and things just aren't moving at all, it's easy to get really frustrated or defeated. But things change, and minds might also change later on. With degus also, my experience as well has been that there will sometimes be an individual that won't do well in a group. The traditional wisdom with all communal rodents is (and it's not a bad basic assumption) of course that they need others around them and they'll suffer greatly without, but provided the owner can provide a lot of interaction and attention, it has in my experience been manageable to have a lone animal. It'd be great if everyone just got along, but sometimes that just won't be feasible.

I didn't know chins don't usually bond quickly, I guess I have been quite lucky then. I have had 2 pairs of chins and both pairs bonded really fast and basically never fought or showed any annoyance with each other so I honestly thought that most chins just get along super easily. Sure I kept them separated at the beginning and only let them be together under supervision but both pairs seemed to hit it off in a week.

lol i can totally understand the skepticism. I had a Guinea pig bond that was even less action than these two had, she was a sad little lady who came from a horder home over 150 guinea pigs and bunnies were removed from the home, i saw a news artical with a video poor pigs had no room at all to move so we expected social problems. Instead when we put her in to meet the herd of i think 6 or 7 at the time, a couple came over gave her a sniff and then walked away the neutered male of the herd gave her a welcome mount and nothin else happened. It was absolutely insane how easy it was. We were right though any time she got backed into a corner or someone came and laid in her current snuggle spot she screamed bloody murder but she had a happy end to her life with friends and plenty of room and never getting preggo again. We dont know for sure she was a mama but she was 2yrs old i cant imagine she didnt get preggo in that time.

Very interesting! Glad they are getting along.Sometimes you can do everything right and they are just not going to like each other!!I had 2 cats for 6 years .I then rescued a feral kitten. I kept them apart for 2 months .Of course they knew he was there and I would bring what he had been sleeping on so they could smell him. When I finally let them see each other ,I had him in a cage and they saw him for a minute. Well, that said...I did everything beyond right! My cat Angel hated that kitten from the time he first saw him until the day he passed.10 years .😸🥰😸

OMG! Thank you for being the first person to say that chinchillas don't have to have another chin pal. I tried to bond my chin with another younger male and he was NOT having it! At one point he bit the younger chin. I was horrified! I have felt guilty ever since, feeling bad that my chin was all alone. Now I feel so much better.😊 Thank you.

This is going to sound wild, but some chins have a gene where they just pull fur. Kinda like when some people have the nervous habit of pulling skin, hair, etc. There could be some unidentified stressor you haven’t found yet, or she could be just one of those chins. My boy did the same thing and he had a permanent bald spot.

Hi there! I have a question, if you’re able to answer. I have a chin! And I’d really like to get her a friend. But she’s not interacted with anychin since we first got her, and I’m not sure she’d know what to do. Would I just take another home and keep their cages in the same room until they adjust, or is it like a dog where you have to check your first dog is okay with the new one in an outdoor space?

I would say the fact that they require a vet that specializes in exotic animals (you can’t see a normal vet because most don’t specialize in small animals, birds, reptiles, etc) alone automatically makes them Not a Great Pet. Super cute and if you have the dedication to put proper and attentive care into them, they’re worth it, but if you tend to stay busy, work a lot, etc, probably not the best idea. I had one for 8 years, and the amount of work I put into his care was probably more than any of my dogs or cats.

Assume they'll live 20 years, are you ready to provide the necessary care for the next 20 years of your life? If not, please just enjoy these videos of chinchillas. Hey Chinpals, I've had my chinchilla for 7 years going on 8 and i havent been able to feed my chinchilla his pebbles, hes only had hay for maybe about three months going on four but hes been fine up until about three days ago. at first he bit me and my brother which is unusual behavior. yesterday we let him out the cage my chinchilla was very unactive wasnt too excited he stood still my brother pet him on his back he fell over to his side.:( he didnt want to get up. Hes had fresh water and lots of hay so im confused as to why this is happening. Today he tried jumping onto his cage level 2 and he fell.later on he tried standing up on his legs to reach us and his hands looked like they were struggling to stay up. when he breathes it looks like its hard for him to. if you know why this is happening and what i can do to help him please when you get a chance reply and let me know weather i should take him to the vet.
