If you ask a Finnish person how he's doing, he will tell you. It's not what you wanted, but you did in fact ask. If you don't specifically want to know how he's doing but rather offer a greeting, say 'hello'. That said, interestingly we do have the expression 'how are you doing' (mitä kuuluu) in Finnish too, and the answer protocol states 'I'm well thank you' (kiitos hyvää) as the proper response.

I went to school in the 80:s but back then the English teacher I had, regarded "Oxford English" as the only proper form of English. Since I was a big fan of the US already back then I used US terms for everything just to trigger the nasty witch. She hated my guts but had to give me a perfect 10 as I often was more correct than even she was. However, my German was far from perfect and she had her revenge with my grades there.

I'm from Sweden so I don't know specifically in Finland but Sweden is similar in that we're closer to Britain however while British English is taught in School, American culture and language is much more prevalent when it comes to Music, TV shows, Movies etc. In the 70s and earlier, everything was British and since the 80s it's more american. I'd imagine that trend is similar in Finland as well. He's not wrong though about Ass. I think it's a particularly American thing though. My Australian friend or my British friends rarely use the word ass in that same way.

@@BrianVelez I remember being marked wrong spelling on spelling tests in school cause I was using American spelling or phrasing over British. I was early with adopting the american variant. Obviously protested it but to no avail. this was probably 20 years ago. since then, I think the English variations have been blended a little bit so both variations are taught, so it's still a developing thing but yeah at this point in 2022, I'd say Britain have very little cultural influence while America have a quite large influence in terms of media.

"Finns differ from other populations in Europe in terms of their genetic ancestry, indicates a recent study. Europeans can be divided into two groups based on an analysis of protein-coding genetic variations - into Finns and non-Finns, reports Nature. The University of Eastern Finland summarises the findings of the research project on its website by estimating that in comparison to other Europeans, Finns are so distinctive in terms of their genotype that they should be classified as a population group of their own."

1:43 Finn here. Well, not really. Back in the day when I was about a size of a fire extinguisher, I watched a lot of TV and played a lot of video games. TV series, especially american ones are barely ever dubbed here. We have subs instead. And with video games, games that had a finnish interface were very, very rare, and english was without exception the default language. And nowadays, we have one tap access to social media and foreign news outlets. While our languages may have received more coverage on video games, we also received more accessibility to the outside world. Thank God that it made me bilingual. It has opened so many new doors for me. Edit: And to add, the popularity of british TV series is really a small fraction when compared to their american counterparts.

@@BrianVelez at 0m4s you said "something very very unique". Unique means "one of a kind" or "one and only one". I don't understand how something can be very unique

i find it super wrong to call it "british english" it is english from england. And our study books dont concern themselves too much with american innovatives ways to rape the language they base their utterances upon. So, we have american. and then we have english. Finns learn english, just like the rest of the world except america.

I was referring to the accent which I should have done a better job at clarifying. It’s great you had the opportunity to learn English, the more languages the merrier.
