Fionna is the finest, most refined, poet who sets her thoughts to beat. She really indicates the beat of a heart. It's not only cool words, it's deep definition asking YOU- the listener, to discern. I love You Fionna. Not to mention how she perfectly matches the rhythm with the mood- or directed the mood. She's so fucking good. True artists are seldom recognized. I love her & am happy she won the Grammys, she actually does care about it, as she has to submit her work each time to even get nominated. Some artist don't submit their work that's really not caring. I'm glad she cared enough, cause they can't award a Grammy if the artist does not enter their work to be considered.

@BillHaines37

@Bill Haines - “Fun”?! Fiona Apple is a composer of extraordinary range, originality, and brilliance. She’s known for giving everything in her performances, but she does exactly the same in her songwriting, in the music and lyrics and in the fit between the two. I mean, she doesn’t make a song from two or three interesting ideas, as though she had a limited supply. If you’re not in awe of Fiona Apple you just haven’t listened enough to her original music. It’s deep stuff - if you don’t love one of her originals at first, if you don’t think it’s a masterpiece, listen again and again. Trust her. Pay attention. You’ll be glad you did. That's my experience. Apple’s music grows you and grows you. In my musically ravished opinion. Besides, she says we shouldn’t compare people, and she’s right.
@BillHaines37

@Bill Haines - Well that’s all true. I’m sorry. What I meant is that even her saddest, grimmest stuff is so full of the sheer joy of music that it lifts you up. Not everybody has appreciated that, so some people have seen her as a sourpuss.

She’s one of those artists who’s undeniably good and unique and authentic, but I never got too into it despite admiring her work. Just the other day “not about love” showed up in my feed, now I’m obsessed. I don’t know who I was getting her mixed up with.... Allanis Morrisete?
@liteflightify
@liteflightify 3 жыл бұрын
I mean, her and Alanis did get popular around the same time. Alanis’ album was so big that it led to a lot of labels signing and pushing “angry/moody white girls”. But Fiona and Alanis are very different artists and have been from the beginning. Alanis’ music is more soft grunge/pop-rock/soft-rock. While Fiona uses elements of jazz, tin pan alley, hip-hop, folk and punk. And honestly, no disrespect to Alanis, but Fiona is the more brilliant, unique and ambitious artist. If you haven’t checked out The Idler Wheel and When the Pawn Hits yet, they are also on the level of Fetch the Bolt Cutters.

@@m.a.g.3920 It's a contradiction to say that the highest pinnacle of acclaim is commonly bought as a matter of common practice, and it's pretty implausible to suggest that it can be bought at all - even if Sony expected a big payoff from the effort, which it doesn't make much sense to suppose. A winner of two Pulitzer Prizes wrote about FTBC in a critics' roundtable in the New York Times: "But I have to tell you guys that whatever I’m typing today about this album is raw, unprocessed (I’ve listened only twice) and certain to be riddled with typos - because my hands are shaking." @liteflightify

The Idler Wheel is a concentrated and introverted work. This is more extroverted, more punk like and more wandering. I think they’re both great albums. But I do think ‘Fetch’ is thus far her magnum opus. However, I understand why a percentage of fans don’t care for it despite the acclaim. Also, you don’t have to post so much hate in the comment section. We get that you don’t like the album, but it gets redundant and you’re not saying anything that a percentage of fans haven’t been saying since the album’s release.
@m.a.g.3920
@m.a.g.3920 Жыл бұрын
@@liteflightify maybe if you had the same feelings I had (deep frustration and disillusion) it would be very difficult for you not to express, so I guess the fact that you consider her best album (which seems crazy to me) makes you see my comments worse than they really are. I've learned and played quite a good bunch of Fiona's songs (and sing them) on the piano, didn't the same about any artist, since I'm mainly a jazz pianist and contemporary improviser. What I want to tell you is that for me this album means a tremendous decline in her composition and is difficult not to think about the reasons why that happent, personal reasons. Perhaps you didn't go that far because obviously, if you like it, none of this thoughts or feelings would go round your mind. For me this is complete dissapointment, musically, and beyond.
@liteflightify

This is literally the most critically acclaimed album of the past five years or so. So, it can’t be that shocking that a good amount of folks love it. While unlike The Idler Wheel (which I see as more jazz meets folk) this leans way more towards blues meets punk. It’s very anti-melody, has a lot of weird time signatures and switch ups. It’s layered and controlled and surreal chaos. And that’s a big part of its appeal. I do know there are people who eventually came around to really liking this album after a while, but it’s also not for everyone. That’s fine, and it’s okay to express not being a fan of something. 8+ comments or so sh*tting on it isn’t really necessary.

@@liteflightify I'm very fond of experimental music, from Merzbow to Henry Cow or first Captain Beefheart albums. In my opinion this is not "experimental" music, it's just uninteresting music. As you well said it's not melodic (but it's also uninteresting in terms of harmony or timber/textures). It has only some appeal in terms of rhytms but sadly it cannot be fully appreciated since the quality of recording is dirty... I don't take seriously contemporary critics. In fact there's amazing artists that go unnoticed and critically acclaimed albums that I bet no one will listen to in the next 30 year. So my guess is the Idler wheel will be the most listened album in the next years and not Fetch the Bolt.. but, let's see.

@@m.a.g.3920 I mean, at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter. And I’m sure overall When The Pawn and The Idler Wheel are bigger fan favorites. The “dirty” and at home sound quality (you might need some higher quality earphones to hear all the nuances of the production), the rambling and unpredictable and oppressive beats, the genre-less flow, the punk-like vocals and the general controlled chaos like atmosphere are all apart of the album’s appeal. And that's not gonna do it for a lot of people. Like I said, it’s perfectly fine not to like the album. The reason I responded to you is that you’ve commented on this page so much that it was giving troll energy. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have bothered.
