Here's another fire alarm test/inspection - short and easy. \Switched it up and tripped it with duct detector test station The devices are all Simplex except for one A/V - as I recall there was a leaky roof incident that zapped the original one. One cannot "officially" buy Simplex parts through normal channels, and of course one cannot install used fire alarm devices - so usually a Gentex or System Sensor gets put in it's place. The original Simplex Panel was zapped by ground fault of some sort a while back. Fire Lite MS-5UD to the rescue!

They flash that fast because they are not receiving a Simplex strobe sync signal that Simplex panels overlay on the NAC.

I remember the school I went to for kindergarten, until early this year, had a Simplex 4010 system tied into an old 4208 panel from the 70s. Most of the alarm signals were old Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 light plates. But early this year, the system began failing; signal circuits would work in one part of the building, and it'd randomly trip (a friend of mine even heard on his police scanner that it went off at four in the morning on one occasion!) So they replaced it with a cheaper Fire-Lite panel, and all the old alarms were removed and replaced with SpectrAlert Advance horn/strobes.

Those Simplex signals might bite the dust soon. The MS-5UD outputs FWR and will fry signals that do not have the circuitry to compensate for that (ie, Simplex signals)

+JMAN123436 The one toward the end of the video is DEFINITELY flashing way too fast I didn't notice anything unusual about the others. There is a minor sync issue with the system as well if you notice when the True Alerts stop you can still hear the Commander 3 do one buzz. While the latter isn't a big deal the former is since strobes have to flash at 1Hz to minimize the chances of tripping seizures in folks that have photo sensitive epilepsy.

Panel is a 5UD, no sync to Simplex. I have maybe 10 or 15 systems that utilize them, some on original simplex panels, some not. They flash at all different rates. Anything under 5 flashes per second is very unlikely to cause a seizure.

Yes there are and I have a family relative who is an electrician and he told me that they have to be synced my dad is also in charge of them at facilities he manages.

Money. Panel died, everything in the field basically works with a Fire Lite panel except sync, so that's how it went down. Pretty common to just swap panel out especially if the system is conventional. As for frying those silly proprietary Simplex AVs, I have never seen that happen. It's all universal 24VDC for as long as I can remember and the only thing that doesn't work is strobe sync. You might be right, I've just never seen it happen.

Because they are not connected to a Simplex panel; Simplex uses a proprietary sync signal. There was a 4100 or something like that in there but it died, Simplex panels are expensive, and they likely had let their contract lapse. Tough to get service from them in our area without a service agreement. When they are powered with a straight 24vdc without a sync signal they flash super fast like that.

Yes, they are designed to be connected to a different panel that has a proprietary strobe sync panel. Technically they shouldn't be there are the rate of flash is up in seizure-inducing territory but that's how it is out in the field sometimes... rules are rules but money, specifically cost of replacements, sometimes takes precedence. Someday someone will probably sieze out and land on their face and then they will be forced to fix it.

It's probably his FD radio he mentioned in a later video he is a firefighter. My ex-wife's father still is or WAS a volunteer at the fire department where he lives and I remember his minitor making similar tones.

+Gary Beltz Good guess but in this case that's just a self-contained motion chime. They are everywhere in those places as it's best for everyone that the inhabitants do not escape. Had it been my fire radio you'd have heard it alert, screech, then belch out unintelligible static because it's a cheap piece of junk. And I've dropped it...hundreds of times.

+Gary Beltz That involves politicking with fire commissioners, and doing so without shouting, yelling, or demanding. And even then I get another one of the same pieces of shit. I have a radio at home so it's no big deal; if I'm out and about but close enough to respond I just do, if the pager opens then there's a call of some kind, I get an automated text within a minute or so with details anyway.

By the way, I saw Simplex TrueAlert A/Vs at the Brooks Centre at Clemson University from when I went to see a production of "I Am Jack" as well as Simplex T-bars. The T-bars were also found at the food court but the A/Vs might be Wheelock MT. Plus, if you go inside the offices of Memorial Stadium, you can see one horn strobe and some red and white speaker strobes mixed together.

@@DCC--vq1ng I'm not aware that such things exist as modules separated from a Simplex panel, but if they do I assume they'd just be standalone modules that one would feed a NAC output into and they'd feed Simplex devices. Given the proprietary nature of Simplex I don't know.

Jaden Roebuck The Simplex strobes are erratic when not connected to a Simplex panel; mostt likely because they are designed to receive a syncing pulse from the panel. Third party panels don't offer any sort of option for syncing because Simplex doesn't play in the open market sandbox.

Not true, actually. Fire-Lite panels output DC FWR current, which will screw up any TrueAlert device. TrueAlerts are meant to run off of filtered DC because of the sync protocol that Simplex uses (interrupted current). FWR current is interrupted just enough that it will break a TrueAlert horn/strobe much faster than filtered current.

What would happen if you were to wire a Simplex Smartsync module inline using another panel? Would it make the true alerts flash properly? Not saying to do so on this or ANY system just wondering.

well since the panel is fire lite and the horns are truealerts they can't sync to be honest the truealerts could explode or destroy the panel or the other way around

+CN railfan No they can't, I know a lot about this stuff and that cannot happen. The MS-5 and MS-10 output filtered DC power which is safe for simplex stuff. Most other fire life panels output FWR power which isn't and the only thing that could happen if it was on FWR is that it'd fry the alarm, not the panel

It's not that fire-lite hates simplex stuff it's the fact that the fire lite panel used in this system puts out FWR and Simplex devices like filtered DC that's why the true alert has a slight rasp to it's sound as well.

Simple answer: The panel doesn't put out a Simplex Sync signal. It's not an option; I imagine that is for proprietary reasons. You can't buy from them and they won't help you. Period. However...by and large their techs are great guys, every one I have ever encountered was helpful, gave me manuals., installer codes for systems I inspect...even an impossible to find duct key once.

brettman273 WHA---Only one word to say: LUCKY. I got to help a Simplex technician do a walk test at my old Junior High school. I helped another replace a faulty pull station there, and he gave me some merchandise, a B-key, and even one of his screwdrivers!!! This was because i sent them a letter showing how big of a fan I am of SimplexGrinnell!!! =D
