My youngest daughter has tendencies of bipolar. Doctors refuse to try diagnosis it because they don’t want to “title” her that young with bipolar. My wife says they’re bio father has similar tendencies but refused to seek medical help. We are a blended family and I am the stepfather but my kids don’t like to call me that lol My children (3) have all experienced multiple traumatic events 1 of 3 is also autistic. So my home is constantly putting out fires daily. This song is very spot on with dealing with constant worries throughout each day with those you love who suffer with mental/emotional illness. My heart goes out to all those who are brave enough to take such a task on. It’s truly not for everyone.

The lyrics to this song are heartbreakingly beautiful - "pretend I'm a shelter for heartaches that don't have a home". He's accepting that she's going to toss blame at him for things he didn't do, for past traumas, for the things that she has no explanation or no one else to blame for them. He loves her and he'll bear anything for her that he can bear. It's just that no other person can bear the full weight of another person's mental illness, no matter how desperately they might want to. Then the chorus "Fire away, take your best shot, show me what you got, honey, I'm not afraid..." He's willing to bear the pain of whatever hurtful things she might say, whatever she might throw at him, if it can help her in some way... but ultimately he wasn't enough. You can't heal someone else no matter how badly you want to.

It wasn't about having the couple's fight. It's the fight of mental health. He was saying, when she's fighting the demon of mental health she can fire away at him, he will be there for her, don't hurt herself, she can say anything to hurt him; he will still be there for her, he can take it. A lot of people can't handle the stress of being with someone with mental health issues but, he's telling her he's not going anywhere. He can handle her tough days. Living with bipolar myself, it is rare to find someone willing to ride that rollercoaster with you because it's never ending. You can manage how high & low the ride goes but, you can never get off.

The thing that breaks my heart everytime I see this video is at the end when the doctors are working on her and they keep asking him questions and he gets frustrated because he can't tell them anything and he says "I didn't find her!" Through The whole video, he was able to find her before she got hurt, but in the end he wasn't there to save her from her illness 💔

Filmed like a movie. I've never seen a better visual depiction of depression than walking barefoot through cornstalks. Or a better depiction of someone living with a loved one who is struggling with depression than searching that field of cornstalks.

Sebs, people send you these hard songs because you do show your emotion and you do get it. When we see that in a person we want them to share in what we already know, from the painful songs to the love songs, we see the way you are with your wife and kids and that's why the community is sending you these songs.

My husband attempted suicide this past year in July. The flash backs of the good and bad times gets me every time. What we have to understand about mental health is that you can love someone with your whole being and sometimes that’s not enough when someone is struggling with mental health. I think this video also shows that the survivor's guilt, if you lose someone, is normal, but also that no matter how hard you try or how much you love someone, sometimes they still go away and you will still be hurting from it. I know I ask myself all the time what if I had stayed with her, what if I had married her like we talked about, but in the end, she still went away and I'm not sure that anything I might have done could have changed that.

Being an instrumentalist most of my 64 years one of the things that is hard to pick up is feeling a song but when you you sing it you finally find out what the secret sauce is. When you put those words in your mouth and say them out loud all of a sudden the bells are ringing because it all makes sense. Country is based in story telling and there's very little filler or flash. It's telling you the story without any commercials to bog you down or distract you. I appreciate your openness and candor and willingness to share how you feel. I just recently subscribed to your channel and I am looking forward to more of your observations.

Chris Stapleton did a lot of research and put a lot of respect and advocacy into mental illness awareness into this video. It shows the extreme highs and lows of being mentally ill and the ones that try to save their loved ones. It also shows the representation that even as a cop, who saves so many, couldn't save his loved one from her mental illness on his own. Acceptance, awareness, and action, stopping the taboo and speaking openly about these issues, helping your loved one to get help is how we save one another. 💚 ; your story isn't over yet

Mental health system is broken. Thanks for bringing awareness to it. Fire away is the perfect song & video for mental health. My family has been dealing with this for generations. My biological father & his mother dealt with it too. My biological father shot himself in the head. My grown son is schizophrenic & refuses to stay on his meds every time he has been released from hospital commitment. The man I called my Daddy who adopted me & raised me & took me to a psychiatrist & psychologist when I was a kid died of cancer in 1982. He was the CEO of a psychiatric hospital. I went into labor with his namesake on the day of his funeral. I have never needed my Daddy's help more than I need him now to help me with the grandson & his namesake that he never got to meet. Insurance doesn't even want to pay for psychiatrist's anymore like it did back then when I was growing up. You have to see counselors, social workers, therapists several times for only about 20 minutes (30 if you're lucky & they think your case is serious enough) before you can ever even meet the psychiatrist. Then the psychiatrist doesn't spend an hour with you like they did with me at every appointment when I was a kid because insurance doesn't want to pay for it anymore. Insurance companies acts as if psychiatrists & psychologists aren't even real doctors anymore & does not want to pay them. Too many mental health facilities have been shut down & there is always a waiting list to get a bed for a psychiatric patient when you need one. My Daddy would be shocked to know the way the mental health system is today compared to when he was alive & CEO of a psychiatric hospital. Laws need to be changed. Thank you Sebs for reacting to this song. I always enjoy your reactions. Thank your Chris Stapleton for this song & video called Fire Away. It brings awareness to mental health.

Biggest anchor I had in my life while being newly diagnosed with PTSD (combat - military) was my wife and our dog. She put up with a lot and was there for me when I hit some of my low points. Sadly, those were the happier times in my life. Divorced (2019) and dog died (Oct 2023). 😅

i am always kind of amazed that people don't pick up on his grief that even as a first responder type person, he couldn't save the wife he loves so. As a person in this wife's shoes, I picked up on this subtext immediately.

The pain of mental health can have devastating effects on everyone who loves the person suffering from it including the person suffering from it. In particular Bi Polar as this woman portrays 😢

People will listen to Chris Stapleton and say “he’s not country, he’s more blues”…. But that’s after listening to songs like “Tennessee Whiskey”, “I was wrong”, “I cry”… he has other songs that have a more “country feel”… he’s also previously sang in a Bluegrass band called “the Steeldrivers”… and I believe a rock band as well lol….Bottom line is he’s his own genre 😂 and can sing the phone book 🔥

Chris is incredible. For his range check him out “Blue Side of the Mountain” when he was part of The Steeldrivers or check out “Barely Alive” when he was part of the rock group The Jompson Brothers.

You really should check out Ode to Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry, she has an amazing voice. This song tells a story of young love that ends tragically. The song won Grammy’s and was a huge crossover hit. There was even a movie made from the song. Check it out, you will love it.

I am bipolar and this song cuts deep. I love it though. Thank goodness I am on meds that help now (finally after 10 years of trying)

I have a different take on the chorus, which makes it even that much more tragic. I had been diagnosed with atypical depression for over 20 years. I had to find a new shrink about 3 months ago, and was diagnosed as bipolar II with PTSD. My wife has been there for me in very tough situations where she could have said it's too much. But she's one of my saviors, telling me, "You can take your best shot, honey... show me what you got --- I'm not afraid of it babe. You can sit back and take aim, babe, fire away. I'm going to stay here through this battle you are having with your illness. Let me share your burden." I refuse to watch the video of this now, but I listen to the music. It just cuts too close and wrenches my soul. But it's so beautiful and tragic.

There is a great interview with Chris talking about why he wrote this song and making the video. He said he wanted to write about the worst thing that could happen to him, and Fire Away was the result.

The people who suffer from mental illnesses like severe depression, chronic anxiety, paranoia, PTSD... etc aren't the only people who suffer. The families, the spouses, the partners, the children and friends ALL suffer. It is exhausting, frustrating, heartbreaking and can be debilitating to constantly worry about, care for, love, rescue and problem solve for those in the horrible world of mental illnesses. The saddest part is all, that is done for some can't make them want to live. This song/vid shows that clearly. I love his voice, too. So much soul and grit. Pitch perfect every time. Great reaction and sorry your sweet wife isn't there for a hug.
