While this type of situation rarely occurs, it can happen, and most of the facilities that have a large number of extinguishers, do have a reserve stock for situations like this. If a hydrostatic test is due, then our technicians will utilize the customer reserve stock along with our stock while the tests are done and the extinguishers are returned.

Hi Zachary, Thank you for watching our video and commenting. Verifying that the extinguisher is full is an important part of any fire extinguisher inspection. NFPA 10 (National Fire Protection Association, Standard 10) is the standard that is followed and that outlines the requirements that are to be followed when performing an inspection. Section 7.2.2 of the latest edition (2018) lists some of the inspection procedure requirements that apply and item #5 says the “Fullness determined by weighing or hefting.” In our video, the example fire extinguisher shown is a Halon fire extinguisher. When an extinguisher of that type, and may other types of stored pressure extinguishers, are lifted (or “hefted”) a trained inspector will be able to quickly tell if the unit is full of extinguishing agent. Further examination will also reveal other indicators that could show if the unit may have been used. (Broken seal, agent visible in the discharge hose, nozzle, or valve, or the pressure gauge indicating low pressure.) Extinguishers which indicate a problem with pressure or have any signs of agent visible will be pulled for service. Certain extinguishers are harder to tell if they are full by hefting, such as Carbon Dioxide units or cartridges, which do not have a pressure gauge or indicator. So your telling me by hefting the extinguisher you can tell if the weight of the extinguisher is correct weight. On a new extinguisher maybe but if someone rebuilt the extinguisher the weight can easily be off by 8 ounces especially when comes to bigger units. The reason they put the weight of the extinguisher with a plus or minus is so that you check to see if it’s the extinguisher is with the right limits. If it’s anything below or above the limits you have to rebuild the extinguisher. You can’t be 100% by hefting an extinguisher.

@@zacharyrivera6040 the fire extinguisher wouldn't lose our gain weight while it's just sitting there the fire extinguisher was properly weighed and serviced either when it was manufactured or when it had a six-year servicing or a 12 year servicing That's not why the technician is there he's checking the pressure and everything else you seen in this video. First time arriving to the location weigh them and then when you return for inspections heft them (as they are due for recharge or hydro you weigh them when you perform the service)
