This week, as part of our INSIDER series, we give you rare insight into our airline oriented Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) training featuring two Integrated ATPL students with their instructor, Santiago Jimenez.
In this video, our flight crew consisting of the simulating captain, Fabrizzio Valle, and the simulating first officer, Nelso Balarezo, experienced a rare but possible emergency of smoke inside the cabin which later advanced into the cockpit.
The crew, keeping themselves conscious by use of oxygen masks, were tasked with the challenge of safely landing the aircraft at the nearest airport before things went from bad to worse. As seen in the video, the two pilots worked together in this stressful environment to bring out the best out of each other and bring their passengers safely to the ground.
This is video is a very accurate depiction of what our MCC course aims to do... create a professional, airline like atmosphere to provide students with accurate procedures and real life scenarios provided by actively flying airline pilots leaving them more than ready for the airline world!

Scenario:
A 12500 lbs take-off weight flight on a King Air 200 from Toronto Pearson International Airport (CYYZ) to Montreal Trudeau International Airport (CYUL) at FL200 with 9 passengers (5F/4M) on board.
Failure:
At FL200 and approaching CYUL, the flight attendant advised the pilots of a smoke smell in the cabin. Shortly after, smoke appears in the cockpit and pilots took critical actions and decisions to safely land the aircraft in the nearest airport.
Roles:
Both: Pilots need to perform the immediate actions based on SOPs which are divided into pilot flying and pilot monitoring. The first action is to put the oxygen mask.
Captain: It is the Pilot Flying (PF) during this flight. However, when he is acting as a PF, during this emergency, he takes the communications as well. In addition to it, he is the one who takes the final decisions.
First Officer: He is the Pilot Monitoring (PM) for this flight. He is performing the checklists, flows and communications. However, during this emergency, his main role is to perform the memory items and the subsequent QRH Checklists

This flight was done in a flight simulator with no real danger to the student pilots or instructor.
Under real life emergency procedures, oxygen masks should be donned without a medical mask to provide a full seal over the mouth and nose.
During the production of this video, pilots wore their medical mask along with the oxygen masks to follow recommended COVID-19 protocol.
