Gaming shotguns come in many shapes and sizes, from the archetypal Remington 870 seen in the likes of Resident Evil and Battlefield 2042, to the sci-fi styled SPAS-12 that inspired Aliens’ iconic Pulse Rifle. Whether they’re packing double barrels or drum magazines, shotguns have made quite the impact on our pop culture. But how close are the shotguns found in our games to the real-world weapons they represent?
In this episode of Loadout, Dave Jewitt visits the Royal Armouries to talk to Keeper of Firearms & Artillery Jonathan Ferguson about the breadth and variety of shotguns, from the classic double-barrelled flintlocks through to the ridiculous revolving Striker shotgun.

AA12 with Frag-12 is more terrifying IMO, same thing just fully automatic. At least no-one's done fully customisable mag loadings yet. I'm fairly certain the not-a-SPAS-12 in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (they changed the names of all the guns, but kept them true to form aside from that) had the ability to switch between pump action and semi-auto. Been a long time since I played that game, but it treated its realworld elements with more respect than ye olde standard fps games which focus more on action. edit: checked a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. wiki and confirmed that it does this, also got reminded that you can put multiple types of ammo simultaneously (combo of slugs, shot & darts, say 4-2-2 as an example, given the available ammo in the game) and they renamed it "SPSA-14"

I would be intrigued to see a video about the history of the ergonomics and usability improvements (and sometimes downfalls) of semi-automatic handguns. Kind of the throughline of how things went from something like the C96 to something like a 92fs, with some of the major advancements and some of the faulty detour dead-ends along the way.
@ghost-jesus
@ghost-jesus 2 жыл бұрын
Funny thing with the c96 is that it was designed to be able to take a stock, which in modern times would effectively make it a pdw or an SMG if you have a rare select-fire version or even better the hyper-rare select-fire Shanxi-45 variant, on the hyper advanced end check out the new Laugo Alien, which is designed specifically for holo/red dot sights and has a stationary top-strap and a gas system that uses gas pressure to delay the blowback or the CZ52 roller locked pistol.

Shotguns are multitools of firearms. Just like howitzers are multitools of artillery and grenade launchers are the same for crew served/squad based firepower. All share high caliber, low velocity characteristic with IMMENSELY wide spectre of available payloads for different tasks many of which their contemporaries cannot cover. And videogames usually let it all down the drain instead. Who needs variable ammo choices, am I right? Right? Right... P.S.: I kind of forgot mortars in this list too.

Games have slowly implemented systems where most shotguns in games can take standard buckshot, slugs, probably incendiary and maybe flechettes, but they're still not quite on the level they should be yet. Amusingly, Red Dead Redemption 2 only has four ammo types for the shotguns, considering that there's five for the various rifles and sidearms, and six for the bows.

Super excited for more content with Jonathan but I do feel like the format could be a bit different. I think it'd be better if Jonathan was allowed to take the reins and determine the "flow" of the episode and explain the guns in detail while Dave inquires more about the guns and ties them into the video game side of things. I think that would let you pack more information into the videos and still be very entertaining. Again, really excited to see more of these. Keep up the brilliant work, Gamespot.

Dual mode is really a compromise where you end up with a gun that’s not as good as a normal pump action when in pump mode, or not as good as a normal semi-auto when in semi mode. Modern semi-auto shotguns are good. You can also do 80% as well with a good pump action. I have a SPAS-12. The SPAS-12 and the Benelli M3 are the two most well known dual mode shotguns. I cannot personally attest to the M3’s reliability and quality, but I’m sure it’s good, but I’d rather have an M4. The SPAS-12 is notoriously finicky and heavy. While I’ve had good luck with mine, I’d not take it into a serious situation
@polkka7797
@polkka7797 2 жыл бұрын
When Jonathon bangs on about semis auto being the future over pump, I’m pretty sure he means in a future military setting. Not civilian firearms, militaries can issues mostly uniform loads for their shotguns that will work the same amount as a rifle round. Where’s pump action is useful when you don’t have a large military industrial complex behind you

It's really funny to me that they showed footage of Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades whilst talking about how the SPAS-12 is usually either pump or semi in games, but not both, when H3VR is one of the few games that DOES allow both operation methods. Also, a minor gaffe, but the presenter mentions Terminator 2 whilst discussing the SPAS-12, when the shotgun's iconic Terminator appearance is during the (comedically simplified) gun store scene and the following police station assault in The Terminator, with the T2 pick of course being the Winchester 1887.

I would like to note that the SPAS-12 that they display has the original defective safety. There was a recall back in the 1980s for all owners to visit any gun smith and Franchi would pay for trigger group and safety mechanism to be replace with a cross bolt design. Original safety, if a shell was chambered, was cycled from safe-to-fire or fire-to-safe would eventually cause the gun to fire. Similar to the Remington 700 rifle issue.

@@Madjo-qj2ge I mean in the case for lets say Battlefield 2042, There could have been a select fire shotgun called the Spas 24 for example. It just seems like a hotbed for some cool guns in game. As far as real life goes you're 100% right.

To me, it's really weird how many if not all fps games, that include the SPAS-12, gets it's depiction wrong, mainly due to how it actually has both a pump and semi mode, and games often choose either for it to be semi or pump and not both. The gun also has a loading door to the magazine tube, but games ignore that, and the player just shoves in shells, like it's any other shotgun.

but in most games you don't run ammo that would require using pump-action on spas, so why bother?

Similar for the FAMAS, it's usually burst only or auto only, but almost never both. I exclude semi-auto because that option's just a blanket decision for the developers to make for all of their rifles.

I think 007 The World is Not Enough or maybe it was Nightfire that included both fire modes for the SPAS
