At 02:55 Sunday morning, Lehigh County transmitted a box for a building fire at the Heather Glen Assisted Living facility at 415 Blue Barn Road in Upper Macungie Township sending stations 8, 56, 25 and Medic 62.
A neighbor behind the facility called in that a deck was on fire and that the residents were still inside. Chief 8 struck out the 2nd alarm and requested additional truck companies due to the fact that he has a working fire and the facility is fully occupied.
The deck was burning in the rear portion of the building and worked its way into the roof. Seven residents were removed via ground ladders in the rear wing as the fire burned above them.
Roughly 80 residents were evacuated from the building. Some were transported to an area hospital to be evaluated, the others to the Trexlertown Fire Company for shelter.
Firefighters continued to work from the inside second floor pulling down ceilings to gain access to the fire in the attic. The fire burned for two hours before being contained. Companies from Lehigh, Berks and Northampton Counties were on scene assisting in battling the blaze.
Two firefighters were injured.

Me neither. Imagine, that many civilians, then on top, seniors, requiring rescue down the stick. That particular scenario is two-fold, injury from fire, and/or injury from stress, example, M.I. Most I ever encountered was 4, in different locations. One jumped from 8th floor window, deceased. One jumped from 5th floor window, as we were ascending to get her, but radio told us to slow down, she jumped. Paralyzed from chest down. That's 2 jumpers. Partner and I found lady on her silk pj's, in bathtub with running cold water. Deceased. Took all we had to get her out, on stretcher, and out the door. I had to sit on her couch for a bit to catch my breathe ! Along with wet silk, she was 300lbs+. It was a bad day for us. That happened around noon. Dispatch sent one engine initially because only one call came in to 9-1-1 reporting garbage bin in rear of apartment building was on fire. We were on the air, so we heard the arrival, " Engine 5 on scene, fire on 5th and 8th floors, people jumping, send 2nd alarm." First tower didn't work. Second tower only went halfway then stopped. Chief 3 asked for "every working piece of apparatus in the city to respond to there location." In the end, 3 dead, 1 paralyzed, several smoke inhalation. One old man refused to leave his apartment, saying he'd get ripped off if he left his door ajar. Threatening police, he gave in. First time I ever saw civilians so desperate that they chose to jump from 50-80 ft instead of being burnt alive !!!

Strong work by Upper Macungie and their mutual aid partners! I will be using this video for training of our team members to help reinforce why you always need to be prepared. Most incidents do not require rescue by ladder, yet this incident required several rescues to be performed quickly and efficiently. Smoke and carbon monoxide are responsible for many fire deaths, and the volume of smoke in the rooms suggests conditions were degrading quickly for the residents. I hope the affected residents recover quickly.

That is their home that caught on fire, I feel so bad for those people...the look of extreme terror on their faces makes my heart break. Those guys did a great job handing them.

Wow, great job everyone ! Firefighters. Chiefs. EMS. 9-1-1 Communication Centre. Police. Assuming something like a Red Cross Creek were dispatched for food, clothing, shelter, and facilitate overnight arrangements. That amount of victims alone is a near-impossible venture, yet they have the elderley aspect to deal with too. So sorry for those. Imagine how scared, confused, alone they felt. Lucky none suffered non-fire related injuries or death such as an M.I. Proud day ! Medals all around !! But you know they'll deny being heroes, saying it's just what they signed up to do. And I agree. It's odd to say, but we really don't feel like heroes. It feels like, that's what we were trained to do, and we damn well better do it to the tee !!!

This is the most gut wrenching and heart breaking thing I've ever seen and I'm in my late 60s. Those poor people were so frail and terrified. I can't imagine how harrowing this must have been all of them. God bless the firefighters and all first responders. Amazing job.
