Years ago when I was 12 maybe 13, I was sitting in my swing as the night crawled in. I remember seeing the fireflies appear, but there was this one light that kept flashing in the same spot over and over not moving. It didn't seem right.... as there was only short grass and trees in the yard, no bushes or flowers and most fireflies were flying around. I ran over to inspect with a flashlight. I saw a firefly was stuck in a spider web trying so hard to get away. I saw a fat black spider working its way down to the firefly. I had no qualms with spiders (I save most insects, including brown recluses and cockroaches). But I couldn't bare watching the firefly struggle to eventually die. So, I pulled the firefly out only putting a small gap in the otherwise undisturbed web. I ran inside and spent the next 45 mins with a pair of tweezers, a needle, and a magnifying glass carefully cleaning this spider web off this little firefly. It was difficult, especially with how fragile and important insect wings are. I managed to clean the firefly off, took it back to the front porch to release it. I held my hand out, and It crawled up to my index finger, stretched its wings, flashed its light, and took off about a foot in the air and then landed back on my middle finger. Flashed a few more times and then flew off into the night. I don't know why at the time I thought it was important for me to save this lone firefly (and steal the spider's dinner), but I was proud that I did it anyway. Sometimes, even helping the smallest of creatures can make the world a little brighter.

The best thing I loved about going to visit my dad each summer in West Virginia from Florida was catching lightning bugs!!!! Stick a lil bit of foil on a jar, poke holes so they could breath and boom, free night light from nature!!!

Oh how I loved hunting fireflies in my youth. The excitement of having a real nightlight on my bedside table was so exciting. The foil in the jar to focus the flashes and lid punched full of holes. Then up before sunrise to release my friends out in the field. And now I find that there is a species out there whose secondary reason for flashing is to lure a male for dinner.
