I like watching your video's cause I'm a chainsaw nut, but I'm amazed how popular porting a saw has become. For cutting firewood a good sharp chain makes the biggest difference. The last thing I want is a temperamental saw. I keep mine stock. I like dependable, and long lasting.

Great saw have a pioneer farmsaw just like it has the same noisy clutch lol also have a farmsaw ll. And it's no joke about the read cage cracking if you tighten the carburetor too tight or used too long of screws just about everyone I've ever seen is cracked both of mine I have glued the cracks and sealed with Yama Bond to keep them from leaking one of them would quit when you left it idling no matter what you did touch the throttle when she was idling and she would quit. The other one wouldn't hold a tune then one day I noticed I had to take it lean to get it to run right so I pulled it apart found the cracks on the read block so the next day I pulled the other side apart same thing. Great video man they do run good especially on our modern mix oil.

Those farm saws are nice. Carful when tighting the carb mount bolts the intake/ reed block is super easy to crack. The coils give trouble too but you can swap out for a husky coil I believe. I just bake mine in a toaster oven when they give trouble

What is your theory for baking them, what temp, and for how long. I remember having to bake a distributor cap to get an English car running, but didn't think there were any components in the ignition coil that would benefit from heating them. I have some dead Husky SEN coils that I will cook, if you can give me some parameters such as, temp and time. Thanks,

Gotta love the old pioneers. I said I was done buying more saws, but recently got a P41 for a decent price. I ran mine the other day through some red alder. It only has a semi chisel chain so its not cutting to its full potential. I want to get full chisel for it but its an odd size 78 links, might need to get a chain made for it. I am curious to see what you do with the muffler tinman. I have removed my baffle and screen but I have not run it without that yet. Seems like my saw is getting choked by the factory muffler. Maybe a gasket delete and muffler mod would go a long way. My wood shed is full now but watching these videos makes me want to go out and get some more. Cheers.

Care to share your numbers? I've been writing down suggestions from lots of people to eventually use on my 51. The ring gap is kinda wide (high mileage) and I am going to put on a 55 cylinder once it starts losing its manners and port it. Is yours closed port w/ decomp? TBH it cuts great as is.

@@mattfleming86 I don’t want to yet, they are unproven and it’s a real experimental cylinder, it was a lot of work gently making a tonsiled intake, mirror polished exhaust with a fairly high exhaust groove. It was a Titanikle cylinder with a pop up piston from Ryan at wolf creek. It has a working decomp as it’s for my grandfather

@@conormichael7964 Understood. I want to go OEM cyl and more "kind of sporty" than "experimental" so thats certainly for the best. It's hard to find folks who have done it without going pretty short on blowdown. I really love the mid-throttle on this thing.
@conormichael7964
@conormichael7964 Жыл бұрын
@@mattfleming86 keeping it like that is pretty hard without machining, the way I have it is for more high end since he cuts 6-10in wood so it not what you want, from running one I’d say increase the intake timing SLIGHTLY, raise the exhaust 1-2 degrees and widen the transfers, they really don’t need all that much to get the really running hard.
@mattfleming86

@@conormichael7964 Yeah it runs great the way it is. Our hardwood has a lot of suckers and whippy limbs so its going to be hard to keep that balance. @ tinman. I have a, what is to me, an interesting question. You have a lathe, and my question is, have you ever knurled a piston on one of your rebuilds. I am an old guy, 79, and when I was a kid my local engine rebuilder often knurled pistons when doing a rebuild when only one or two cylinders was out of tolerance. I have also learned, that PM Canadien chainsaw builders also overhauled pistons by knurling them. With all the building you are doing , this would be an opportunity to give new life to OEM pistons, that in my estimation are of much better quality than the cheap stuff from overseas. ,
@tinmanssaws
@tinmanssaws Жыл бұрын
That's a great question!! To be honest for the price and quality of the aftermarket stuff I use I can't really be bothered to knurl a piston.. I've little to no trouble with Meteor and hyway pistons so I tend to throw those in .
@jjock3239
@jjock3239 Жыл бұрын
@@tinmanssaws I just thought I would ask. I was thinking long term, and by that I mean, Some Mac and PM pistons are getting pretty rare, and I was thinking it would be a great way to keep these saws alive. I have a candidate, a 24 horse Briggs, that has piston slap, but I don't have the time to tear it down and chuck the pistons in the lathe and knurl them. Thanks for considering it anyway.

@@tinmanssaws I have the answer to another issue I think you were discussing regarding disabling the governor on a Husky 2100. I have the answer, just drift it out, and block the hole with one of the aluminum plugs you get in a rebuilt kit. The person that passed this on to me, also stated, that you now have a 12,000 rpm saw that will cut like jack the bear, but you no longer have any protection from over revving, and it is now possible to blow the bottom end out. Caution is the watchword. I am going to do it to one of mine, but this won't happen until winter when I have some time. Right now, I am just fixing things to stay operational, such as, fixing a leaking fuel tank, replace two coils, change the starter in my 4x4. Next, pull the tranny and transfer case, so I can replace the clutch. To do this, I have to weld up a transmission cradle for my floor jack. That is just the beginning of my list. and at 79, I'm no young pup.
