It would probably work better if the bit were more axe head shaped and attached securely to a long handle.

Put the drill in in the low, #1 setting and split from the side close to the end of the log. This thing won't replace your 30 ton splitter but it's good for splitting a little wood for the campfire.

I see law suits incoming! The only time I have seen this technology work is with a solidly mounted 1/2 HP motor driving a cone through a reduction gear. Log is then fed so the cone enters the side. At least one of the two items, motor or log, must be fixed firmly.

Always looked at these a figured they might work with really straight grained, small wood. But throw a small knot in there or a more substantial piece and all the sudden it would become super frustrating

You should use a rotary hammer for something like this. If you don’t have a rotary hammer, then use an impact drill, if you have to use a combi like that do not set it drill. That’s how you lose a wrist. When the torque threshold is passed and you hear that clicking, keep going, ride the clicking and notice what’s happening. The bit starts to pulse rotate and won’t grab. This is similar to how a rotary hammer works. And no matter what approach to wood splitting you take, never start in the middle. Look weaknesses that are there naturally and exploit them.

Put in a drill or on a motor shaft, it can be used as a pigtail onto which you can mount a cloth polishing wheel for shining up metal .... splitting wood - forget it !

I can't believe that so many people want to use BATTERY tools on a massively heavy duty job like splitting wood. First, set it on low speed for the torque. Then lay it down so you can control the twist. Start on softwood, to see if the thing even works. HINT: It won't with a battery tool. Plug it in. Try a corded heavy-duty right angle drill, like a DW121 or DW450. Use channel lock pliers to grab the screw cone to unscrew a stuck one. Are you putting us on, Wooly? Do you really not know that low speed has the torque, and that's exactly what you need to do this type of work? You haven't had a big drill bit stall on high speed, then work for you on low speed? Condolences.

I was thinking the same thing. It seems common sense has left the chat. The tool may be junk but at least show what it can do using the right tools. It would be like trying to cut down a 60” dia tree with an 18” chainsaw. “Nope, junk, waste of money.”

Drill type splitter on a hand held driver. The initial round,, always split from the side,,, not the traditional stand it up end,, you cannot hold it. Rather,, split it from the side toward one end or the other. And mostly,, unless it is well cured ash,, it ain't gonna work.. Or you are going to find out just how strong your wrist is,, or is not! Basically a POS.
