Animated documentary on the early Achaean settlements and the first royal dynasties of the Mycenaean Greece. We walk you through the early Greek history of the Bronze Age, from c. 1700-1470 BCE.
Early kings and their reigns are as based on traditional chronology of the ancient historians. Many figures of the Mycenaean Greece are known only from the later writers and poets, who recorded the previously orally-passed tradition.

These are awesome. Not Greek but I love ancient History, especially Egyptian, Cretan, and Mycenean material. Took a course in Ancient Greek History in the 1960s in College but a good part of this is new to me. I also had 4 years of Ancient Greek. Wanted to read the Iliad in the original. It's awesome. Wish I had kept up with the language.

I'm a Greek with great knowledge of the these stuff and I really appreciate your work! I just want to mension that the Minoans are also Greeks - DNA tests of skeletons from tubes from Mycenians and Minoans people, showed that their DNA was completely matching, approximately 70%.Yet, in Greek mythology the Minoans are also mentioned many times, and not discriminating them from the Mainland Greeks as a different barbarian tribe

@@lianko2000 I have not disagreed with anything that Kostas said, his points are valid and always welcome. Due to Linear A still being unknown, I accordingly avoid giving any specific ethnic identity to the Minoans other than Eteocretans which was specifically confirmed by ancient Greek sources. If anything, I personally see them as very related to the mainland Greeks, but clearly different to the Achaeans from Mycenae. Also, this channel does not support degratory sentiments. Greeks are my people too and the content here is authentic and result of a lot of effort. You are always welcome to give your feedback.

@@WanaxTV thanks man. You seem reasonable. We Greeks are getting tired with thieves trying to steal our history and identity. There is also an ongoing effort to alter some facts just for the sake of making new conclusions. I dont blame them, we have all the significant history in the world and they cannot stand it. We gave the lights to this world. They should eternally thank us for this.

Thank you so much for this video you shed light on things I didn’t know before. I knew the Hyksos were in Egypt and the mythological Greek Olympian line of demigods begins with Europa and then Io going to Egypt after leaving Crete Atlantis and Zeus then Apis and Memphis, then like Libya, Belus and Agenor, etc… that’s the most confusing part about Egypt, because it Hass to be the Egyptian Atlantis, when the Minoans were still the dominant country. Did you know that Caphtor of Crete is Hephaestus? Apparently his forge was in Memphis Egypt. Egypt is where the Nereids were born the children of Nereus the old man of the sea, who was even in the Iliad. Aphrodite was supposed to be a Nereid. Thetis mother of Achilles is a Nereid that makes Nereus the grandfather of Achilles. I didn’t know Io was a priestess in a princess of Argos

Hey,whats abaut Tantalos and Pelops.They came from Paphlagonia in Asia,probably fleeing from expanding Hittite Empire and establisht themself as rulers of Mycine.Pelops conqert the whole Penninsula which was called then the Pelopsisland aka Peloponesos.Coming from Ahisia,Asia,they were called Achijava,giving the Names to the Greeks of their Time.from that came the later Names of Achaeens and Yavanna,aka Ionian.I am missing the Connection in your Artikles although I like them a lot.The heritage of importent Dynastys in early Greece from Anatolya can explain their constant fiendship,open or hidden with the Hittes also.please answer me.

So, lets clear one thing up. Achaeans was not their name. Nor Mycenaeans. Achaeans is the englification of the greek word Αρχαιοί(Akhae-ee), which is a modern term. Modern day archeologists named them like that because later greeks (of the classical and hellenistic age) called them -ancients- relative to them. So Alexander and Pericles are considered ancient greeks relative to us greeks today, but they considered agamemnon and atreas ancient. In greek ancients is αρχαίοι(arkhae-ee) and by changing the name by removing the "r", modern ppl named them Achaeans so they can understand each other while communicating.. This is very important. Because by naming them achaeans, one might get confused and think they were not greeks or that they didnt consider themselfs the same breed/kind. They called each other by the place they grew up (exp. Thessalian, Cretan) but they knew they were one fraction. So all their wars are civil wars. All in all, when modern greeks say Ancient greeks they mean greeks in the era ofthe Minoans, of Agamemnon, of Miltiades to Alexander and to Constantine the great. But, Miltiades considered ancient the greeks of Agamemnons era.

Yes and no, there are two known exonyms that refer to at least some part of Mycenaean Greece during the Bronze Age. "Tanaju" used in Egypt for Mainland Greece up into the 1340s BC (replacing "Keftiu" used for Minoan Crete), and Ahhiya/Ahhiyawa used in Hittite correspondence starting with the letters about Madduwatta (late 14th or early 13th century BC). There is also Ekwesh, which has been proposed as a reference to the same base Mycenaean word that Ahhiya/Ahhiyawa derives from (although we don't know what that word would be), and used in the 1250s BC for one of the sea peoples, but the link is not proven and it's likely going to stay that way. So we know that at least the Hittites were calling them by something resembling "Achaean" during the last century before the Bronze Age Collapse, what we don't know is what did they call themselves.
@LuisAldamiz
@LuisAldamiz 2 жыл бұрын
The word Achaean, along with Danaoi and Argives are used almost interchangeably in the Illiad, meaning "Greeks". The term is also present in Hittite and Egyptian chronicles (Ahhiyawa, Ekwesh), in the latter case however they use more their version of Danaoi: Denesh. It's not "modern" in any way, modern is "Mycenaean Greece", which is fair enough but has some people sometimes nit-picking about some other city/realm, like Athens, Sparta, Thebes or Pylos, not being in the name.

The name Pelasgian means something like people of the sea, I sometimes wonder if they were called this from a distant memory of The Sea Peoples. Of course, we know that Indo-European migrants or conquerors brought the early Hellenic language to those who lived in Greece, sometime before 3,000 BCE. I think the question is: to what degree did the IE speakers displace or kill the previous population in Greece, particularly the males as they did in other places, probably the Pelasgians? There is remarkable continuity of DNA from Minoan and Mykenean era peoples with the current population of Greece, including on Crete. Except for one small population (The Mani) in the Peloponnese, there is no later Slavic genetic signature in Greece, unlike in most of the Balkan region. The ancient Greeks said others were Greek if they shared the same: “blood, Gods and language”. Ancient Macedonia was Hellenized by its Greek Royal Dynasties, especially under Philip II and Alexander, but its population was almost entirely replaced by later Slavic migrants, there is little Greek DNA there now.

Great, as always. But, please pronounce Greek names the Greek way. For one thing, C is always pronounced K (the Romans rewrote Greek names according to their preference, of which one was using C for the K sound). Mykenae is said Mi-KEE-nay, and Mykeneans is Mi-KEE-ne-ans. The shift of using C for S sounds in certain cases didn’t happen in Latin until much later and is something English got from the French. Other common inaccuracies are the Latin endings -um for the Greek -on and the Latin -us for the Greek -os.
