#electriccars #honda #hondaeny1
If you were to glance at the new pure electric Honda e:Ny1 across a crowded carpark, you could be forgiven for thinking that it just looks like the familiar, petrol-powered Honda HR-V in a slightly futuristic hat.
But Honda would like you to think of the e:Ny1 as a stylish, dynamic little SUV that’s absolutely going to appeal to hip young things. Who don’t mind telling people that the drive a car with a name like a postcode.
Honda already has an electric car in the shape of the glorious Honda e, but that super-stylish electric city car costs a billion pounds and has the range of an unfit person’s bicycle (actually £36,920 and 137 miles, Ed)
The e:Ny1 is much more mainstream. It’s a five-seat electric SUV that’s not big and not small, with styling that’s neatly conservative and fine-but-not stand-out everything else. Honda themselves say its rivals are the best selling Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro EV, although the pricing is actually closer to another big seller - the Tesla Model Y. But more of that in the pricing section later.
Join Nicola as drives the Honda e:Ny1 for the first time. Are you a fan of Honda's newcomer? Will you be choosing one? Let us know in the comments below.

I totally agree, it’s the main barrier to entry for me - I’ve just watched a review of the upcoming Fisker Ocean and that starts at pretty much a full £10,000 less than this car, and the range is better. If a startup can produce what looks like a very decent car at that price, why can’t established manufacturers do the same.

What are you talking about? You buy a gas car and after 10 years depending on mpg you’ll be paying around $30k for gas. A EV cost about $50 a month of electricity and you’ll be paying $6k in 10 years. So your $30k gas car cost about $60k+ in 10 years. EV’s you don’t do oil change, smog check or change your break only after over 100k miles. Plus you save all those times fueling up your car with a charger at home. EV’s save you time and money and it drives so much better than ice cars. So basically your ICE cost the same as an EV in 10 years and you just don’t know it yet and the longer you keep your ice car the more it’ll cost more than an EV.

It would probably been decent if it came out 4-5 years ago. Now it’s just mediocre and way too expensive. One of the largest motoring magazines here in Norway gave it the worst reveiw I’ve seen in years as well. This just smells compliance car, and should be judged as one. Just sad to see what Honda has become, even if the e was a fresh and cool.

Based on how long these cars take to design, develop and build, I wonder if manufactures lose touch of where the market competition sits, before it’s even launched. A few examples here: 1) charging speeds - Adequate at best and 2) Price - too expensive for the majority of people who are considering it’s rivals. This car may have seemed really accomplished 2 years ago, but now, it’s difficult to see why anyone would buy it - I feel the PCP marketing department have their work cut out.

Toyota has been poisoning Japanese auto makers with this attitude for the last decade and its beginning to seriously hurt them.
@FFVoyager

@@drxymthe 'move to hydrogen' was a Japanese government policy. Toyota, being the largest car maker by far, simply progressed more with the concept. Although I think Honda were first with the FCX Clarity around 2008? 🤔 The Japanese need to ramp up battery production - although Panasonic have a head start as they were working with Tesla. The reason Japanese industry has moved into other Asian countries is twofold - saving on costs, it's cheaper to make outside Japan and staff. The Japanese are a rapidly aging population, so it's hard to find the right people there!

And for £5 less, you can buy a Tesla Model Y. Which has a very big boot with the seats up and a dolphin swallowing boot with the rear seats folded. The charging ports. in eNS1 charging ports are in horizontal position while I noticed that it's vertical in the eNY1. Nothing more at all. May be only price is higher there in UK due to taxes. in UAE the prices are between GBP 18000 - 22000. By the way, I hope to hear/read a technical opinion on the location of the charging ports ! is it smart to place it in the most prone place to collisions and accidents ! especially that anti crash system can be disabled. Honda's way of doing things is different. Historically, they don't jump on trends until after everybody else has, and then they bring something cautious to market that is acceptable but flawed, and then they come back with the next model and blow everyone out of the water. They do play the long game.

Loved your review (and you as a reviewer, Nicola!) of the e:Ny1. Like you, as I heard your description of it and the pros and cons, I came to a similar conclusion, save for the fact that it lacked physical buttons for the center console control panel (me and touchscreens don't work well together!) and frankly the placement of it would be a major impediment of my line of sight while driving it. It should've been placed a bit lower - or have the option to adjust it so that you'd be able to have a clear view of the road ahead of you. Just out of curiosity, Nicola...how tall are you? You mentioned having plenty of room in the back seat, but without mentioning your height it made me wonder if I'd be afforded that same room (as I'm just shy of 6 feet tall), or would I look like a giant cramped in that space. Finally, this vehicle (like many EVs) suffers from the same pricey problem - it's made out of "unobtainum" with a mixture of "cantaffordium". 45K British Pounds for that? Sorry, wouldn't be able to get one. :( Thanks for the great video (you look gorgeous, btw!), Nicola! (hugs)

Sure, many Honda dealers worked hard not to sell the e, meaning there's less than 2k on UK roads, which is a shame. Oh and the e has a really good 1 pedal mode which I'm really surprised hasn't been retained as much of the switch gear looks identical (you access it via a specific button by the gear selectors on the centre console, not via the paddles).

I would have expected EVs to now have 500-600km range, especially for a family size car (I don't mind if a small city car has less range, but with this size, you'd expect to regularly travel out of town)

energy density: the available floorplan only gives a limited volume of battery, and the Li-based chemistry (solid-state are still maybe 8-10 years from price equality) is reaching the upper end of it's bulk 'battery' power density. +50% range obviously =+ 50% more voluminous battery, = increased height or width or length or all 3. i.e. bigger. So a trade-off. Then there's mass and battery cost... and how often do people actually drive 300+ miles in one hit?

I have solar panels, so I find it practical to have a big enough battery to allow me to charge with the sun when there are sunny days and go on without charging for a few days when the sky is gray. This being said, my remark was more in the sense that I'm just surprised that the range has not progressed much in 5 years (compared to my "old" Kona) , while this is probably one of the main (if not the main) point of concern for new people purchasing EVs. Just look at the mazda MX30. In theory, its range, even though small, is sufficient for the average daily use. But its sales is just disastrous and they are stopping its production.

Thanks for the video! It seems Honda is starting very slowly on the EV segment. The charging port at the front is not a good idea given the front and rear tend to be the areas most prone to damage (accidents). Repairs may become even more costly... The interior looks nice but of course simple/bare. Definitely a utilitarian vehicle that should be offered at an attractive price point. Honda really needs to offer it at enticing prices. As is I can see it will be a total failure... Then they can say "nobody wants" an electric car... Lame!!!! NOTE: The excuse about low acceleration/torque is RIDICULOUS!!! (not your fault of course)

I can't see they'll sell any at that price. Maybe £35k might swing it for a lot of people, but this is madness. I wonder what the leasing companies will think of the residual values too. Is it too early to predict the first major manufacturer to fail due to the switch away from combustion? On this evidence, my guess would be Honda.

Personally I find 1 pedal driving is over-hyped. I think it also encourages you drive too aggressively/not efficiently, a bit like hopping from accelerator to brake all the time in an ICE car. Every time regen is engaged you're essentially losing energy converting kinetic to electrical energy. The most efficient way to drive is to anticipate as much as possible and use as little regen as possible.

Earlier up in the year it was reported this car would cost about £30,000. Here’s a quote from a publication in May: The Honda e:Ny1 will arrive in the coming months in Europe. The automaker did not reveal pricing, but UK media report the electric crossover will have a starting price of around $37,500 (30,000 pounds) in Britain. So are we being ripped off in the UK ?. PS I’ve read it’s much cheaper to buy too in Norway and elsewhere too!

in china the ens1 is the same car as this but i found them at 18k usd or 20kusd with all the options but its basically this car but for the chinese which make sense because honda takes care of its own. but it makes me want to try to get one of those instead.

@@peak3590 The price differential is unjustified. I appreciate there are shipping costs involved and these cars are made in China but £30,000 is 38,000 USD. That’s about half the price. It’s a good car and Honda are extremely reliable. They will struggle to sell them here given we are in a cost of living crisis and there are other options available such as the new Volvo EV which comes in cheaper.

I will post the other opinion. I don't like to one pedal drive. its a jerky ride especially for the passenger and I think it is wise to use the brake pedal at every turn so that you keep trainig your brain to an automatic muscle response to press the brake pedal in an emergency. luckily my kona regenerates just as well on the brake pedal so my choice doesn't effect the range.

My gripe with a lot of EVs is how short they are. The HR-V is only 63.4 inches tall. 5 inches shorter than my Forester. The EV6 is even lower (60.8") Having a high floor because the batteries are below them and a low roof means not enough cargo space. There is no way a 42" dog crate would fit in the back. Considering Honda sells more than twice as many CR-V than HR-V in America it is baffling that they didn't electrify the CR-V first, regardless of whatever silly alpha-numeric jumble they use.

So many new cars that will fit that 'liked it, until I heard about the price' and I am left wondering what these might cost second-hand, after someone else takes the hit on what must be quite high levels of depreciation (now the over inflated second hand values are starting to return to normal as supplies of new cars improves). Might be a good topic to talk about in general, along with looking at the best ways to finance such vehicles - or whether to just wait for an ex-demo model to come up, and save a packet for a nearly new car. At the moment, so many likeable cars are simply not going to get sold.

I like it, but… that charging rate is pitiful, the cargo space is minimal, and the regen inadequate. C'mon, Honda: one-pedal driving is now a must. 78kw... my 2015 Model S starts at 115kw and goes all the way to around 70kw until about 65-70% 78kw is just s€%&. This is one step up from an MX30 EV. The real range is not going to be more than 350kms at 100%. The reason it doesn't cone to a full stop is because of the induction motor. Only cars with a permanent magnetic one can do that.

Fabulous reviews by this reveiwer. Her sense of humor is perfect, being American if I let down my concentration I could miss out. The name sounding like an address, I first saw the notice for this car back in February, I thought weird name. Kona ok, Model Y ok. Inonic 5 ok, e:Ny1 🤔 I drive a 2023 HRV got it in May just after I saw the notice for this all electric. The reveiw helped me since I haven't seen many Honda EVs around, in the land of German cars (and the already huge selection of electrics). That part about more electric cars coming from Honda, 10 more? I like the idea, but I agree that the $52,000 price is a little high, but that's the going rate for most of the other electric cars (as I've mentioned). The Honda e is too small in the back seat, good for driving short distances and the front , my slightly taller wife is very comfortable (almost 6ft tall). We want a electric Jazz. Honda Germany is having a power day on the 28th. I would still like to see this car mainly for ideas. thanks for the review.

Great and infiormativ review. When it comes to one-pedal driving I personall dont like it. It is tiny less efficient than coasting/adaptive regen/blended brakes. In iaddition it is less comfortable to need to keep the foot on the accellorator. With adaptive regen you can just remove the foot and the car will adjust the needed regen. (Like Audi and other does )
