In today's video, I am sharing my review of "First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind." I mentioned in my daughter's 1st grade home school curriculum choices video that we would be using this book as her core Language Arts program.
By combining it with a couple of other grammar and writing workbooks, I have been able to make an inexpensive, easy, comprehensive and fun Language Arts program for her.
I do plan to add some more practice worksheets very soon but we will still continue to use First Language Lessons along with those. I love this book and highly recommend it!

I absolutely LOVED doing FLL with my first/second grader! We are now almost to the finish line after 12 years of homeschooling. My oldest is now in college, and my youngest will be a senior next year. I did FLL with her, and it provided some of my most precious memories. The repetition is ESSENTIAL and beloved by children! It's how they learn, and I think we do them a disservice because we adults get bored. Kids don't -- they crave it, at least until middle school. I still watch the videos I took of her reciting her poems and grammar rules and choke up (she was so little and cute!). It was a lot of lap time spent together in those early days, and I think our FLL experience gave her not only a rock solid foundation for building those skills, but it kept her heart soft toward the subject (we eventually went on to study Latin from middle through high school). I used to teach English grammar in public school, and it was a complete waste of time (mine and theirs) because there was no context, no relationship, no joy. I'm so glad to see that people are finding it and loving it. Best to you and yours. It's all worth it.

I really loved the it for the first two levels. It was just the gentle, scripted approach that we both needed! : )

We have really enjoyed FLL this year. I'm not as disciplined about the poetry memory work, either. We read them, but we don't memorize them. I thought I wouldn't like the scripted nature of the book, but my son actually loves the calm "newscaster" voice I do when I read my part of the script, and he tries to respond in kind. Weird, but so fun! We like the scholastic interactive notebook for language arts and explode the code to supplement. Thanks for the review!

You're welcome. It sounds like you have a good thing going with your Language Arts, too! :) Who knew it would be my favorite subject to teach?!

Thanks for this review. Recently heard of this and it caught my attention because of the repetition.

We're using this book this year too, and we are really enjoying it. We do it twice a week, but can easily do two lessons a day, as they're so short. We are including the poems, but not really focusing on 'memorizing'. We read the poem daily, and now he's memorized them just from reading it every day.

I love how it really teaches to their level. I don't have to try to re-explain everything in my own words to my child's level.

We love FLL! My 7 yo daughter struggles with memory due to medical/medication issues, but I've been pleasantly surprised at how much she enjoys the lessons and poetry memorization. My 4 yo listens in sometimes and also enjoys the poems. I supplement with workbook pages that review or add to the lessons we're covering. We started in Aug. I'm hoping to start level 2 in Jan.

Yes, this book definitely needs some extra workbook pages but I think that's what makes it so fun and able to be customized!

We are loving this book. My daughter was still 5 years old when we started and the repetition is required for her. She does not sit still so a few short lessons a week is much better for her. I was totally ready to drop the memory work but my daughter LOVES the poems.

I think the repetition is so important at this age. I only ever found one review of this before I purchased it so I thought I would put my 2 cents out there. I think it's amazing!

We love love LOVE FLL! My kindergartener is loving it as well. We follow The Well-Trained Mind as our skeleton for our homeschooling, and my not-yet 6year old is 100% a classical child! Any other method would flop with her! We also use the Writing With Ease as our writing materials and the Story of the World for our history.... Clearly we love Peacehill Press!

Theres a writing with ease by well trained mind have you used that?? I really love the layout and scriptedness (is that a word😅) of this. But I like the hands on from all about reading. I'm so torn. Do u have any suggestions since you have used both??!

We used Writing with Skill for about 5 minutes but it didn't work for us. AAR is a reading program and Writing with Skill is a writing program so I really can't compare them. I think writing is one of the hardest subjects to find a good fit for. My youngest is doing well with BJU's English program and it alternates between grammar and writing. My oldest is using The Good and the Beautiful's L.A. program and it has writing interwoven in that.

@@ShayShayChardonnay we have all of those and explode the code. We don’t necessarily do everything everyday but rotating through has been essential for my son. We pair them daily based on what the workload is in lessons and it helps reinforce and build on without being overwhelming I think.

This has been super helpful. We just homeschooling our son this year and he is in second grade. The language arts curriculum we have been using we haven't really been enjoying. I don't feel there is enough repetition during the lessons for my son to really grasp or understand the concepts. I also need "hand holding" as well so this sounds wonderful. I'll also look up the second grade moffat girls bundle for him as well. My son absolutely hates writing as well. Do you have any suggestions for building writing skills?Thank you for this review!!!

You should definitely give this book a try. It is very repetitive which might get a little boring but that's why it's so helpful to add in those extra practice worksheets from the workbooks I recommended or from The Moffatt Girls. The Moffatt Girls also has a writing program you might want to check out. We actually are using IEW for writing and it can be modified to work with various grade levels. I will actually have my full review of it up on my channel next Wednesday. I hope that was helpful! :)

HAHA! I was just talking to someone today about this course. I used the example of 'common nouns' and 'proper nouns' and how I'd think, "Are we going through this AGAIN?" So I'd quiz my son - point to an object (like a table) and ask, "What is this?" He'd say, "A table." So I'd ask, "Is this a common or proper noun?" ....... "A proper noun." So..... yeah. Back to the lesson we'd go. LOL

Megan Smith It works almost exactly with FLL. We just finished FLL level 1 and are beginning Level 2. There are some units in the bundle that we haven't talked about yet but so far, almost everything in the bundle follows exactly with FLL.

Not at this level but starting with Level 3, there is a student workbook. Since there are no worksheets, only limited writing assignments, I use The Moffatt Girls Language Arts bundle in combination with FLL.
