Joe Abercrombie may have written some of the best one liners ever. In my humble opinion.

Perfect video! I’m burning through “Before they are Hanged” and was starting to have anxiety after book three! This has been the only book series I have jumped right into the next installment without a pallet cleanser!

Your reading a series is totally the best to get the entire message of the whole story. Thank you so much. Hey video.

After finishing The Blade Itself, I'm genuinely interested in seeing how this world reaches an industrial age. I can see the seeds of it though, at least in how society is developing in the Union. Has the Age of Madness made the First Law world into gunpowder fantasy?

What my reading order has been as I'm going through these: First Law Trilogy Best Served Cold Age of Madness Trilogy Red Country The Heroes Sharp Things I loved First Law trilogy, then went to BSC and found it kinda underwhelming. Started craving a longer plot so I jumped into Age of Madness; which I LOVED. Then I was craving more Logan, so I went to Red Country. Now I'm gonna start The Heroes and Sharp Things shortly thereafter. 😅

I LIKE your reading order. The commentary is helpful; especially the idea of reading "Best Served Cold" as a test of whether to then try the First Law Trilogy. I read the stand alones first but I think the First Law books would've been better to start with.

Recently re-read the trilogy cause I never knew after I read them the first time 5 years ago that the world kept growing and now I am excited to read the standalone books now that the world is fresh in my head!

I've read them all multiple times, in the chronological order because it's the best. Although I would recommend Sharp Ends first, because it's gives a great tast of Abercrombie's writing, but doesn't spoil the other books that much. If you read Best Served Cold first, there are huge spoilers for stuff that happens in the first trilogy, Jazal for example.

I agree. I would add that for the stand alone books, reading them in the order that they were published allows you to better follow the story of one character in particular as he is present in all three of the stand alone.

I just watched this because it was you. I started on A Little Hatred because it was $7 NZ . Friday ( today Sunday) I got The Blade Itself ( BDep again cheaper than here - so now I begin). Off subject have you ever considered getting a tame bird ? Cockatiels ( clean apart from seeds etc escapes from cage) . Lorikeets ( messy inside & outside of cage - had to say that). They really are like little people if you have the time to spend with them - Covid aside of course.

I got Joe abercrombie first law trilogy and the a little hatled for christmass well my dad has because he got an amazon account and I got them for christmass yipe but I hate put the 6 books the one with the world of first law is in, so I just got the first three books and the time of madness books, so I might get the other 3 in June for my birthday if everything goes well or if I can confidence him before then me *me winks lol* see what mood hes in at the right time i am in no hurry, anyway I can always wait I have almost 400 books on my tbr pile, and two book cases in my bedroom where I sleep really, its not a big room but well its the perfect size for a small home library and the bedroom combined, what I am here can I read the first three books and the time of madness trilogy before the best served cold books.

I agree the published order is probably the best order. I read in published order my first read. On my second though I tried something different that worked far better for me and it is what I recommend to friends. Basically you read in published order outside of Sharp Ends and sprinkle in the Sharp Ends chapters mostly in chronological order, but not entirely. I'm always focused on characters and cause and effect. How did a character get to point and what shaped their reaction to said point. Some of the Sharp Ends prequel chapters would have some spoilers, so you can't adhere to chronology entirely. I just like attaching the character focused chapters to that main character's primary book. I don't like a lot of real time between reading sections focused on the same character, idk, it fucks me up sometimes for some reason. So, save the Logen and Glokta prequels until after the 1st trilogy (more so Glokta's). But do things like dropping Curnden Craw's and Bremer's Sharp Ends chapters right before reading The Heroes. Read Shy's just before Red Country. And definitely read "Hell" right after Before They are Hanged. All the Shevedieh and Javre chapters are great consecutively read chronologically. PS: am I alone in really wanting some of the (avoiding spoilers) Sharp Ends characters and one should be giant character from a standalone (rhymes with "blanked") to show up in major ways in the primary trilogies?

I'm about to read this series for the first time and kind of want to read it in chronological order. Everyone says to read it in published order, it was nice to have your input on a chronological order. The advantage with a chronological order can be a totally different experience and anticipation. I can compare it to Star wars. Everyone says one should watch 4-5-6 and then 1-2-3. But if you watch 1-2-3 first, you'll have a whole other different liking and knowledge of who Obi-wan is and his death will have a much greater impact. Yes, you will be spoiled that Darth Vader is Luke's father, but you will then have the anticipation of the two of them finding out, which could be just as exciting. And knowing where Darth Vader came from, he would be a totally different character than just some powerful bad guy and him finally turning good again would also have a whole other impact. I do wonder if "The first law" books, could offer such an experience as well?

Fuckin love his book. Read them all in order up until his new 2. I didn't know he had new books out and I saw one and just grabbed it. Turns out the one I grabbed, trouble with peace, is the second book in his new series. I'll just be reading the first one as a prequel

And knowing where Darth Vader came from, he would be a totally different character than just some powerful bad guy and him finally turning good again would also have a whole other impact. For someone who watch 4-5-6 first, small signs of Darth Vader's emotional struggles would easily be missed by those who don't know how he was. He would just be a bad guy all way through, for then to suddenly turn good the last 5 minutes. I do wonder if "The first law" books, could offer such an experience as well?

Agree 100% on order of publication. I do think you could get away with original trilogy to the newest series and go back to the standalones and short stories without too much risk of ruining the experience of the standalones. A good example of a series where it would not be so great to follow order of publication is the Witcher series. Thank heavens for the internet. That series is a mess. PS. One of your best videos!

Someone who's read The First Law Trilogy and watched the video to figure out where to go next here! I wasn't sure what all the other books he's actually written *are* nor which are related to each other in an actual series vs just the same world. Sure, I could Google it and get those same answers, but a video is easy because it's all in the same place so it's easy, as well as simply that it's more fun.

You can trust ebay honestly. Bought 3 books recently in very good condition (there is also good, and fair conditions) and they literally look like new. You can check in the description it tells you if there is wear and tear, if there are markings etc. www.ebay.com/itm/The-Blade-Itself-The-First-Law-Trilogy-1-Abercrombie-Joe-VeryGood/313189265901?epid=216969351&hash=item48eb88f1ed:g:43MAAOSwAANY53sk
