Enjoyed the review, glad visp is back in stock. My original OR gave me good service for three years. Then started wetting out this summer in the AZ monsoons. Treated it twice, was still wetting out. Just bought another OR a month ago, it does have a new fabric, but have not been in the rain with it yet. But it has worked very well as wind protection. We will see about the rain with the new one. Otherwise I'm switching to the visp too. Thanks 😊

I just received my VISP about two weeks ago...haven't put it to use yet. Another benefit is its sized to mesh with the Torrid jacket as a size-to-size outer layer...medium VISP will fit over a medium Torrid, etc.

@BreathEmpowerment 2 жыл бұрын
I hadn't noticed that! I was planning on getting a Torrid along with the quilt I just bought from them (taking advantage of their current 20% sale). I was a little bummed it doesn't stuff in itself, but function is priority. Knowing it's meant to layer with the Torrid sealed the deal for me! Thank you

The only thing I'm not a fan of is the hood. Wish there was a bill so rain wouldn't run down my face. The way around it is keep it loose. But in high winds your face is going to get soaked even with your head down.

Im back to using Tyvek - its a bit heavy but its a miracle product. It's mainly for a ground sheet but doubles as my rain kilt. The size is such that it wraps 1 1/2 times around me, covers to my low shins, and is warm and bullet proof in rain. Absolutely doesn't blow up. I wrap then roll down to my waste and finish it off with a real light bungy around the waste. Then you have it as the first item on the ground before the tent. And you can fold it into a swan or a broach or a pterodactyl ....if you'd like (old man joke)

My Helium II has the same issue, it worked great for a few months, and then started wetting out where my pack hit it, now it just wets out all over if its more than just a light rain. I have not reapplied the coating though, but frustrating for such an expensive jacket.

I think the Helium was designed more for climbing than hiking. The lack of length in the back is better suited to being worn with a harness. The climbing aspect is also why the Helium has elastic cuffs (less chance of getting caught on rocks/gear compared to the adjustable). Great video as always Fro…except for the whole Jupiter being your man crush instead of me 😤😅

A wide-brimmed WPB hat worn OVER any rain jacket hood will prevent the rain jacket hood from ever wetting out. Marmot Eco Precip Safari hat is one such hat, but needs some ring magnets on the strap to make it work even better. Such a hat is also great to shield one's head, upper face, and neck from the sun.

I switched from OR Helium II to ZPacks Vertice about 2.5 years ago. Mine is still going strong though I have heard others having issue eventually with their Vertice wetting out. Looks like EE almost copied the Vertice jacket feature for feature, except the Vertice has a slight bill to the hood. Highly recommend the the Vertice mits, layered with 100% merino glove liner from Sitka as a base layer and then the possum down gloves from ZPacks, those Vertice mits provide the 3rd outer layer for max protection at minimal weight and volume. Those Vertice mits also keep the wind from robbing any heat your other layer or two has. Those three layers on my hands were a game changer for me 2.5 years ago and they all are still going strong. No thread or fabric issues with constant use. I just add and remove layers as needed. I also have the Vertice pants. They are fine, but I just don't seem to use pants as much as my jacket and gloves, as my legs seem to be able to put up with quite a lot. I will say, the pant can be put on and taken off easily even with your footwear on (from Altra trail runners to Salomon hiking boots)
@FrozensAdventures

The vetice was on my list of things to check out as well. I've heard some down sides from other vloggers (like Darwin) that he didn't really like the vertice.
@Hangs4Fun
@Hangs4Fun 2 жыл бұрын
@@FrozensAdventures yeah, Darwin's the only one I've hear from, but he does seem to fancy the EE line. Similar to your original OR Helium II, maybe I got a good one, no clue. Also, possible that fabric supplies changed for both OR and ZPacks? I'm just glad my Vertice setup is still going strong. I still use my Helium II jacket and Helium pants btw, I keep them in my vehicle in case of emergency. The Vertice had a pit vents, we're lighter, and breath better. I def understand though if Darwin's Vertice let him down, it's time to try something else. If I remember coming correctly he loved his first set and after getting a replacement he had similar wet through problems that you experienced with your warranty replacement. Any way have a great day, and be safe out there

Thanks for the review. I was also between the Versalight and the Visp, but went with the Visp and it’s a great minimalism lightweight shell for on-the-go or backpacking. I also have a Goretex Pata rain shell that weighs closer to a pound so it’s my cold weather or camping preferred layer when I need something heavy duty. Now, I’m strongly considering the Visp rain pants piece. Do you have any opinions on these, or rain pants in general? Thanks!
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
I'd probably go with a rain skirt than pants. If you are after a lightweight wind pants that you can add dwr to then check out the ballerina pants on Amazon. Under the name body wrapper. They've been great for windy days and warmth. Not great in the rain though.

I, too, started out with the helium ii. The dwr was iffy but the real deal breaker for me was the lack of adjustment on the hood. It would be ok as long as the wind was calm but just a small breeze would blow it off your head. Mildly infuriating. The visp looks sweet. Hope it works out for you.

In that time fortunately or unfortunately it's only rained once on me. My initial thoughts are the material is better than the Helium 2. I do not like the good on the visp though. Def would love to see a vid comparing the virtues of these lightweights as oppose to a tougher midweight material like the midweight models of Arcteryx -seems that the problem w/ lightweights is they’re liable to get punctured alot easier ? Right now im using a MAMMUT lightweight i got on sale but it doesnt have pitzips so its only for winter -Last few years of been buying whatever is on sale and once its beat down it gets replaced BUT THEN THERE’s the question of creating waste?!?
