This is a first look review of Gotham Steel Bacon Bonanza, which was also marketed as "Bacon Bonanza Copper." I put it head to head against the older As Seen on TV bacon cooker called Bacon Wave, and I was surprised by the results. I purchased Bacon Bonanza at Bed Bath & Beyond for $20.

Mine works fine and it cooks evenly in about 35 min for crispy bacon. I only keep it in for about 25 min. Maybe yours cooked unevenly because you kept opening the oven.

Ovens actually cool down 7 degrees per second that the door is open, so standing there for 10 seconds looking at it drastically drops the temp.

Opening the door is a no-no, but It may also have to do with the air circulation of his oven. Maybe he needs to rotate the tray halfway through.

I've never tried your method or have even thought of it as a possibility. I always cook bacon in the microwave, but I will try your method the next time I cook some bacon. It sounds like it would be much easier and not as messy. I like my bacon to be cooked all the way through. I like it to be crispy enough to the point where it's medium to dark brown, and no fat at all. Hopefully, your method will work. Thanks!

Next time load the strips fat side up, the fat takes longer to render and get crispy, so the extra heat it receives being on top should even out the cooking. the meaty side will cook fine being semi insulated by the pan. But you need more direct heat on the fat side.

TOTAL GARBAGE! I got a bacon wave for Christmas years ago and used it once. It took ten minutes to load it, another ten to microwave it, and 30 minutes to clean it. What a pain in the ass. Notice that he showed cleaning the tray? ( which wasn't cleaning very well at all) and he didn't show how he cleaned the rack? Yeah. I would say it took him a heck of a long time.

Okay, I got one of those Gotham Steel things for someone for Christmas. I got it for someone who said they wanted to "try" one of those pans. So now, New Years day, I have gotten at least 3-4 email promo's for Gotham Steel products and today, I got one of those for this bacon wave device.. .so viewing your review today is so appropriate for me. You are like my own "staff researcher scientist" or "America's Test Kitchen" expert, all without having to turn on my TV machine and search for episodes of America's Test Kitchen to see what THEY say about how to cook the perfect American-style bacon. Thanks again. Love the editing and the music in this video, man. You do such wonderful reviews.
@AWWx2
@AWWx2 6 жыл бұрын
By the way, America's Test Kitchen's recommendation for cooking bacon: the preferable means to cook bacon evenly, predictably, and uniformly: place 6-12-18 strips of "raw" bacon on an oven pan, cook at 400 F of 5-10 minutes, turning pan around once in oven for uniform texture and crispiness. Drain bacon on paper towels before serving, (bacon actully gets more "crispy" and stays tasty as it cools and the "fatty" part of the bacon drains after cooking and draining that liquid fat). Just on a plain oven pan in an oven at 400F , pan can be washed gently with a soapy sponge and rinsed, ready to be used again soon to bake cookies or whatever the next time in the oven. Google this KZfaq video or follow the link I provide below: "America's Test Kitchen S02E18 Bacon, Eggs, & Home Fries" or link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJxya7SftJ2Vmok.html at 12 minutes into the video to start bacon cooking instructions. In other words, no special equipment needed, just a good pan and a good set of instructions.

The bottom part is not done, because it sits inside the deep pan, which makes it steam rather than fry. A product weakness, it should be elevated over the pan, maybe 2-3" higher than it is, that would make a huge difference...

Or better yet, just use a 12" skillet. I cook an entire (12oz) package when I make bacon by carefully cooking 1/2 package first, removing 1T fat to another skillet for eggs, then draining the rest of the fat and wiping out the pan before cooking the rest.....Voila! Perfectly/evenly cooked bacon with leftovers for salad crumbles. Don't fix it if it ain't broken.

Copper Chef Bacon Bonanza is doing a GREAT job, I have found my Bacon Size & Oven Time. I purchase 70 lb. Case of 2/8" thick sliced Lean Platter Bacon per month for $92.00 per box. I cut my Bacon strips to Length of the Pan because they won't fit, the pieces are saved for Pinto Beans or Fried Potatoes. 12 Thick Slices take 30 minutes at 425 degrees, and are very crispy being 90% Meat and 10% Fat. I found the more Percentage of Fat in bacon requires more heat to crisp. I don't like Microwaved Bacon, seems to make the bacon to tough to eat.

Freakin' Reviews The reason why more and more people will not microwave their food is because of a study by Dr Hans Hertel that found that microwave radiation changes the molecular structure of food and the consumption of such microwaved foods REDUCES the amount of good HDL cholesterol, red blood cells and white blood cells in the body. So it's best not to eat food that are cooked using microwave radiation.

Very nice comparison. Just wished you didn't open the oven door so many times as that effects how long it takes to cook. I avoid cooking anything in plastic, so I was leaning strongly towards the bonanza. However, since it cooks so unevenly, I'll pass on it as well.

I cook my bacon in the oven. I've got my wife doing the same. It just turns out so perfectly in between chewy and crispy. I need something like the metal one you used. Stinkin' awesome! Edit: Ok, so I wouldn't pick the metal one. The design is all wrong. I need to be able to lay each strip flat beside themselves. I've bought large baking pans that came with a drying rack. Ideally, I would lay each strip flat on one of those suckers and take the drying rack from another one to lay over top of them. But those racks are a pain to wash!

I have had the bacon bonanza for a while (got it on sail at Menards. I think it was $6 or $7). I got better results from it by flipping the rack over so the rungs point up (they suggest this in the instructions) and backing it that way. I found this more or less removes the inconsistency problem you were having. I just finished backing some tick cut bacon with it while watching this review. The only beef I have it is that it doesn't have enough slots for most bacon packs, so I always end up with an awkward amount of left over uncooked bacon. As a side note: I like to place the fat side of the bacon up when backing. I subjectively feel this helps.

I used to buy these bacon cookers and always ended up disappointed, to the point I stopped eating bacon due to the frustration. I still enjoy watching kitchen gadgets reviews (obviously😅), but I'm tickled to realize that in the same amount of time it took you to load up one of those bacon cookers, you could have perfectly cooked bacon just using an air fryer. Once I found this out, I'll never cook bacon any other way 😊

Maybe try the bacon in the copper crisper? I think the pieces laying flat would make them cook better. That and the fact that this bacon cooker is a single-use gadget (or as Alton would call it a "unitasker") where the copper crisper has so many more uses. Also, with both the oven and microwave cookers, how much splatter is there and how difficult is the cleanup? I would think the microwave would be awful.

I would vote for the bacon wave as well, for the same reasons that you have stated. The Bacon Wave is actually still available at wal-mart for $9. I don't own one myself... If I'm in need of bacon in a hurry, I have an old Nordic Ware bacon tray that I (rarely) use. Unfortunately, the Radarange is down for the count at the moment, so I can't compare, but I usually cook my bacon on a cooling rack placed in a 1/2 sheet baking pan (bacon strips laid flat) at 350 degrees until crisp (I don't typically time when I bake). Laying the strips flat seems to be more sensible for oven bacon, though I just have a conventional gas oven. I noticed that you have a fan forced "convection" oven. Did you have the fan running while using the Bacon Bonanza? If not, I wonder if that would make a difference?

On a cookie rack over a jelly roll pan in the oven-no probs and less hassle. It does take 30-45 minutes, but I make them in batches and use throughout the week. No one in my house has a problem eating leftover bacon!!!

I just cook crispy bacon on a preheated frying pan. Lay the strips flat and let it cool in the oil. When it's done I take it out and lay on a paper towel. That cleans up the excess grease. Takes me 5 minutes.

Too much bacon spatter with both of these for me. I don't want to have to clean my microwave or oven after making some bacon. :( I put my bacon slices between double paper towels with one paper plate on top and one on the bottom. I microwave for 3-4 mins and then turn the whole thing over and repeat--adding more time if needed. This makes nice crispy bacon with no spatter because the grease is all contained in the paper towels which are thrown in the trash.

Vickie. Have you any idea how many chemicals are in paper towel? You are actually eating all those when you cook with them. Maybe google what's in them and you might find that you might change to old school and use a pan on the stove. It's the best way anyway.

I'm not thrilled by either of these cooking devices. I guess if you need quick bacon, the Bacon Wave would work in a pinch. The thing that neither of these cooking devices fully understands is that bacon crisps in its own oil. As bacon cooks in a skillet, it releases oil which heats up and helps fry the bacon crispy. Neither of these devices take full advantage of this. The Bacon Wave does this more than the Bacon Bonanza, but more or less by accident because of the speed at which the bacon heats in a microwave. I'd still prefer to skillet fry bacon for the most evenly crisped results. Thanks for the review.

I think I like how the bonanza worked more I like the differences in my bacon. As an off shoot though I wonder if you preheated the bottom tray with the oven if you'd get a more uniform product.

I just bought the bacon wave, I find that you should start from the top, not the bottom. Place bacon on top row, push excess bacon upwards to make a curvy M shape with the bacon. Leave enough excess bacon on the left and the right sides so that it is still in the perimeter of the tray to make sure the drips don't drop off of the tray.

After you use a microwave oven alot and retain memory from that use. You learn that 8mins straight vs 4 segments of 2mins opening the door and fingering at the food have massively different cooking results.

I got a bacon bonanza on sale at Wal-Greens for $15. Used it twice for the last 5 minutes of cooking I laid the bacon on top of the grate to help with the uncooked bottom and continued cooking. The Bonanza is good for cooking baking while preparing for work you can take a quick shower while it is in the oven. I would hesitate to microwave bacon unattended. Bacon was crispy. S/N for thick sliced bacon you should only use 6 strips with a space in between.

What I want to know is how long did it take to clean the microwave or the regular oven after that..... Great video ... now I know to not buy either one but keep using my cast iron skillet. That microwave bacon looked kinda sketchy. And we don't have a microwave. By choice ... we have discovered that without one, we actually cook food instead of just heating it up.

I'd like to see you try Wright's thick cut bacon on the Bacon Bonanza for 26 minutes. Bakers tell you that when you open the oven during the cooking process, you have to add 3 minutes to the cook time every time you open the oven and when you open the oven, cooking becomes uneven.

Obviously, the Bacon Wave does a much better job at cooking the bacon. However, the Bacon Wave doesn't last very long. After only a few to several uses, you'll start to notice that parts of the Bacon Wave, including the skewers, begin to melt, as it's all plastic. So, the concept of the product is a good idea. However, the strength and durability of the product against the heat of a microwave, needs significant improvement.

Your oven a convection oven? That would make the top cook faster than the bottom because the pan shields the bottom from the moving hot air.

Bacon wave. Funny thing. My dad was a butcher back in the day at Piggly Wiggly and worked his way up to meat merchandising manager for Safeway working outta El Paso, TX and was always a great cooker of meat. I went to visit him one day and he asked if i wanted breakfast? Hell yes, he made a great breakfast! I see him pull out the Bacon Wave, and was like what?! He said it makes great bacon. I said okay, and he was right. It was great bacon. It actually cracked me up. The man who always pan fried his bacon, threw it in the microwave. Thing must be God sent. HaHa.

That thing has got to be perfect for making oven chips, just cut long, real thin slices of potato, sweet potato, beets etc, then do them in the oven (hot). I have a ålastic rack for the microwave and it works amazingly well, I make the chips without any oil at all, but for the oven, I think you should spray with a little oil... Maybe you could give it a go and make a video about it?

I was really confused at 2:55, because my GE oven makes the same sound and I was momentarily wondering why I'd set it to preheat in the middle of the afternoon. I don't see a point to these products. If you want to cook bacon, just do it on a sheet pan lined with parchment and let them cool between a couple layers of paper towels to absorb any rendered fat.
