60’s and 70’s had better anti-war music. Vietnam was much greater than any wars in the 80’s which I don’t think there were any. Just Contra affair and other intervening shit with other countries. Maybe the War On Drugs?

Agree to disagree. The 80s brought a new and very real threat of total annihilation because the Cold War had everyone, civilians included, convinced that nuclear war and the ensuing fallout were only a minute away. There entered a new kind of aggression (paired with a powerless helplessness against the scale of such a conflict) both in lyrical content and instrumentals that aligned perfectly with emerging thrash and heavier styles. Comparing the wars between decades is an exercise in futility because you're completely ignoring a huge mental shift amongst the global populace.

James Hetfield isn’t anti-war, and has denied it as such, but this song could be interpreted as anti-war, mainly because the movie in the music video was very much anti-war, as well as anti-democracy and pro-communism, because communism never brought war. /sarcasm

Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy this track as well as the album but Lars did Jason dirty well also disrespecting Cliff. Jason laid down his parts and Lars going against the engineers/producers advice turn down the bass. This album was in the works during that Master tour we lost Cliff. Who knows how much was already complete as they’ve been very hush hush about how far the writing was complete before his passing. They have a history of taking others work without giving the credit and money they deserve.

@@jmoney6900 I agree with the comment regarding Jason's bass in the mix, but the album wasn't "in the works" when Cliff died - they were still touring Puppets when that happened, the album only came out 6 months before he died. The only thing that's ever been confirmed as "being in the works" was some of the track "To live is to die" which has some of Cliff's melodies/harmonies and a quote he was fond of as the only lyrics of the track. They've never been hush hush about writing - it's kinda well known that they were supposed to start writing sessions for Justice in the Spring of '87 (due to how they wrote stuff until the Load/Reload era with each band member having their own separate "riff tapes" but James and Lars had full control of what riffs got used and where and how and that was also when the tour for Puppets was supposed to be "winding down" but not fully ended) but James broke his arm skateboarding so the songwriting didn't actually start til later in '87 when he could play his guitar again, pretty much a year after Cliff had died. And that comes from people involved in the album and music publications at the time ;) With regard to "having a history of taking others work without giving the credit and money they deserve" - to avoid that being a libelous statement i assume you have actual evidence to back that up - despite what happened with Dave Mustaine in the run up to recording "Kill 'Em All", they still give him songwriting credits on that album and the "Ride The Lightning" album, as an example.

Yah I remember rushing home from school on my bike - I was 15 for the "World Premiere" by Mtv. I was so stoked to finally see what my new favorite band I looked like - having discovered them a year earlier with Master of Puppets album Monsters of Rock tour. I remember by the end, i was mortified and slack jawed stunned - didn't know what to think. In an era of MTV when most everything was bright and poppy and sensational, this comes along on MTV and just wrecks the vibe with its epic and profound sound and visuals. And one of the greatest heavy metal songs ever recorded; right behind Master of Puppets I think.

ONE is a masterpiece of a song. It not only shows Metallica's prowess for writing, but it shows off their masterful control of their instruments. And the subject matter playing in the background (scenes from the movie Johnny Got His Gun) drive home the lyrics so well. The song/movie shows the real cost of war - the human cost. He returned from the war, but his battle has just started. Very somber imagery, but so important. And just think, this was Metallica's very first music video. Stripped down, raw, moody. They ramp up their sound as the imagery ramps up the horror and despair the soldier feels. It's masterful in every way.

This is the song that finally beat Michael Jackson's Thriller for #1 music video of all time. It's based on a movie which in turn is based on a book of the same name, Johnny Got His Gun. It's about medical experimentation after a soldier in World War 1 is severely injured by a mortar shell. The song says landmine just for rhyme and flow of the song. The soldier is being kept alive against his will and does not have the ability to communicate his wish to be allowed to die. This video was very controversial when it was released because it exposed the unethical nature of medical experimentation. Metallica bought the rights to the movie just so they could make this video.

Eay man, I know the feeling. My dad is a Vietnam vet too and the only stories he'll ever tell are the ones that are funny or have a goofy twist. Shits hard to talk about for them but I'm sure eventually, maybe over a drink or two, he'll be willing to recall some of that past. This song in particular is about a movie that hit home to James, the lead vocalist. Most of their songs tackle heavier, much more disturbing topics that are often glossed over, simply due to the fact many of them are just too uncomfortable to speak on. They do this in countless songs, but as for a new listener starting out , Master of Puppets, Fade to Black, Disposable Heroes and countless others have extremely deep meaning and are among the most popular. You could put a playlist together of a good 100-150 songs by Metallica, each with a different sound and purpose. Halo on Fire and Dyers Eve are a personal favorite.

You also have to remember - this was Metallica’s forth album and they made Zero music videos until this one. As a teenager in the 1980’s this was crazy and why many of us believed they sold out when they made this video. I saw them play live during “Master of Puppets” tour and then this tour “And Justice for all” - It was a complete different vibe at the concerts just between these two albums. Both Great albums

James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) wrote 'One' inspired by this 1971 movie - "Johnny got his gun" (based on the war novel by Dalton Trumbo) about a soldier in World War I who loses his arms legs, sight speech and hearing from an explosion and is trapped in his shell of a body... This was Metallica's first ever music video filmed in 1989 from their 4th album 'And justice for all' from 1988... The band were reluctant to spend money to make a music video that MTV would not likely play, but they had a platinum record in '88 and MTV came to them. So, they decided to make a low budget music video for 'One' and incorporated scenes and dialogue from the 1971 movie that inspired the lyrics. Metallica had 3 studio albums by 1986 and were the hottest new band on the scene at that point... they had graduated from the clubs and were now opening for major acts in arenas and winning fans over by the thousands on tour w/ their frantic brand of thrash metal... But tragedy hit the band hard early on... Metallica worked the scene hard, touring everywhere they could in N. America and Europe... their 3rd album 'Master of Puppets' went gold in the US without any mainstream promotion in 1986... Metallica was on the road in Europe when their tour bus crashed on a highway in Sweden - their bassist Cliff Burton was killed in the mishap and the surviving members were devastated and drank heavily to cope w/ the grief. But Metallica were not willing to end... Jason Newsted (bass) was hired to replace Burton and Metallica were back on tour into 1987. Making the 'And justice for all' album was difficult... they were still grieving their loss and angry on top... The songs on the album were especially violent and frenzied... the music was progressive and heavy... James Hetfield poured his rage and disillusionment into the lyrics and the album was a huge success out the gate... In the Summer of '88, Metallica were on tour w/ Van Halen and they stole the show every night and half the crowds left before Van Halen took the stage... 'And justice for all' was released in the Fall of '88 and went platinum faster than 'Master of Puppets'... and MTV aired the music video for 'One'... which pushed the album past 2x platinum in sales (8xplatinum today)

It's from a movie that's based on a book about World War 1. The book was about a patriotic boy who goes off to fight and endures the horror of war. The book was actually banned for a short period of time during WWII to prevent men for being discouraged to enlist

The song was inspired by a book and movie called Johnny Got His Gun. It was about a WWI soldier that had an explosive shell hit near him that ripped most of his face off in addition to effectively destroying both of his arms and legs. They modified the story just a bit for the song in that they made it a land mine instead. I believe they said it was Lars (the drummer) that first found it. After he introduced the others to the book/movie they wrote the song. They were so moved and inspired by the movie that in order to use whatever clips from it that they wanted to in the video they outright bought the movie rights. This is an absolutely masterful piece of writing an absolutely horrifying song.

Metallica is one of the best old school hard rock bands. Known for long intro's and a killer riff. When this came out I was a bit too young to fully understand it, I just knew I loved the beat. Then I learned the lyrics and dove more into Metallica lyrics in all their music. Nearly all of them have a message or another, its so good.

It's not often that a Metal song could bring tears to people's eyes but this does. Each time I listen to it or watch a reaction, I have a lump in my throat. It's so f-ing heartbreaking. They want to hide this man away so as not to show the citizens of this country what happens to the soldiers sent to war. They won't kill him either because that bring attention. Just list him as missing in action and let that be that. James and Lars are excellent songwriters. They always have a message to their songs.

Inspired by a 1971 film, "Johnny Got His Gun" which was based on a 1938 novel by the same name. Basics: A World War 1 American Soldier dives into a shell crater during an artillery borage and takes a direct hit from enemy artillery. He loses both of his legs and arms, is blind, def and cannot speak. The doctors do not think he is mentally conscious so they experiment on him by seeing how long they can keep him alive. They don't know that he is conscious and now trapped in his own head and in constant pain. A very powerful movie and song!!!

I may love Enter Sandman, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), and a lot more, but One by Metallica is a song I emphatically love with all my heart and soul. The imagery and the instrumentals in the song really go hand in hand with each other. I seriously cannot give this song enough praise. I dream of joining the Army to protect and serve my land, but more importantly the people who live here so this song kinda makes me nervous about that dream, but again it would be purely for the sake of serving this land and potentially giving up my life for it. God Bless the men and women who have served and are currently serving.

So the song was inspired by the book/movie “Johnny got his gun” where a man comes back from WW2 only to find out he’s basically a living corpse, the line “Landmine has taken my sight Taken my speech Taken my hearing Taken my arms Taken my legs Taken my soul “ was talking about the man.

This is from their 4th studio album ...And Justice For All, released in 1988. Held as one of their best albums, this is one of their best songs. There are few songs that are held at or higher than this as far as show of ability and overall approval. What I'm saying is, you just listened to one of their absolutely BEST songs, agreed on by critics and fans alike. It shows their PEAK performance. The only album held higher than this one is their self-titled 1991 release, Metallica, also called the Black Album. Since then, it's slowly been downhill. A great GREAT first Metallica song, but very few others will hold to it. Not telling you NOT listen to more, I'm just saying you just witnessed them at peak. Also, no. This wasn't a true story or from a movie. It was written based on a movie James Hetfield, the lead singer and frontman, watched and loved called Johnny Got His Gun from 1939.

Most people who react to this don’t really acknowledge the movie lines in this video, so I thought it was cool you picked up on a lot of them. There is one mistake though, the scene where he says “he’s a product of your profession, not mine”, that’s not a doctor saying it to a military person, a lot of people mistakingly think that’s what it is. But what it actually is, is a priest saying it to a doctor. There’s a lot of context to that scene that you need to have to understand what it means.

This was first ever Metallica song I ever heard. Looked up the meaning couple of years later, and it broke me. It's about a man who went to war, stepped on a landmine I believe and yea tragic... very heartbreaking. This movie is called "Johnny Got His Gun". This is an amazing song nonetheless! Both the movie and the song is based on a true story of a soldier coming back from one of the world wars. Had head trauma and had all limbs amputated. Was essentially a vegetable and all he could do was twitch his head or blink his blind eyes I dont remember. So he tried to use it in morse code to say to kill him because he was constantly in pain. Its an anti-war song

Great reaction. I came from the complete injustice of a reaction that was the Cartier families reaction to this song. You listened to the lyrics and tried to hear the deeper meaning in the music. This is a generational masterpiece of a song and it deserves just that.

Vietnam ended when I was a baby, James is roughly 7-8 years older than I am, If I remember correctly, James sought out the book ,the movie is adapted from, and later wrote this, it's interesting to understand that he may remember people leaving to go to war, and I remember some of them coming home. The Gulf war began when I was almost 20 years old, and it was the first time my age group was aware of a new war directly involving our friends. This song ,and this whole album was album really, was our protest

Don't get me wrong, because the music/vid combo is super powerful. But 10/10 times Id rather just listen to the song, I always get annoyed when the dialogue comes in and overpowers such awesome parts of the music. Wish more people would just react to a lyric video or something.
