In this video, join me as I shoot the Traditions Kentucky Rifle that I built for the first time, dressed in 18th-century clothing. As I load the rifle with powder, patch, and ball, I discuss the history of the Kentucky Rifle and how it was used during the American Revolution. Then, it's time to shoot! I take aim at a variety of reactive targets and discuss my experience shooting the rifle, including its accuracy and recoil.
After a successful shoot, I take the rifle back to my campsite and prepare to cook the grouse that I harvested earlier that day. I go over the process of preparing the bird for cooking and share a few tips for cooking wild game in the field. As the bird cooks over an open flame, I sit back and reflect on the rich history and traditions of the Kentucky Rifle and the joys of hunting and cooking your own food in the great outdoors.‪@BlackPowderTV‬

Thanks much. I appreciate your content as well, it’s great. I still have a ways to go with the kit, I need chaps, shoes and probably a new Fowler. I’m thinking about getting a chambers New England Fowler.

Nice build! Love the color of your stock. In regard to lock time it will help a bit if you pick flash hole out. If it feels crunchy when you pick you are in business in regards to primer powder don't be afraid to get it next the flash hole just not mounded over it. Your group isn't bad at all just file that front sight down a bit. Nice work!

I have a woodsman caplock. That thing is a beast. Never fails to ignite. Ive heard guys say Flinters are a process to get use to but once you do, its nothing at all.

Nice striping on the ramrod. Don't forget to tension it.

Yeah I forgot to do that. I’m going to take it apart again soon to put the tensioner in. Thanks for the kind words also.

That’s a pretty badass looking rifle. I saw the kit months ago and thought it would be a cool thing to build but after this video I’m definitely getting one lol.

Half of a pan of priming powder AWAY (on the right side of the pan) from the flash hole. You want the flame to go in the hole and not for the powder to burn through like a fuse. I close the frizzen, tilt the gun sideways 45 degrees and bang on the opposite side of the lock with the right side of my right fist. I carry it tilted when hunting and tap on the side periodically, and replace the powder as necessary.

Few questions, how difficult is it to build the kit? I have some woodworking skills not amazing but decent, also what stain did you use it looks amazing
@finflask1862
@finflask1862 5 ай бұрын
I feel the kit was pretty easy to build. It’s not necessarily a fine firearm, but it’s adequate. I think I used mahogany stain. It’s been a few years since I made it. I was asked before and it’s in the comments of one of the videos on this series. I know it was a minwax though.

you did a nice job on the rifle, buddy! the flintlock long guns like the kentucky take time to get used to. but, once you know how it behaves you can be dead on. good luck to you buddy!

Very cool. Thanks for sharing. I'm debating on whether to go for a flint or caplock kit. I have cap and ball pistols, so may go with a caplock, but you make the flintlock look very appealing. Thanks for sharing. I love how you show yourself flinching in the video. This is definitely a rifle that will give you balls of steel. Ha ha! I love it.

Yea I’m still learning how to shoot flintlocks. I’m probably going to upgrade to a L&R lock for this gun. I find the kit lock inconsistent.

@@finflask1862 Dude I am watching this video again and wishing I could click like again! I'm definitely going with a flint lock. Cap locks seem boring. I am trying to save my money. I just love this video for some reason. It looks so fun, even when it doesn't go off! Ha ha I am looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing.

I have a Traditions Kentucky Rifle and I've been surprised at how well it shoots, it will keep roundballs in a silhouette sized target at 125 yards offhand. Mine really likes 55 grains of Goex FFFG, a .490 roundball and a .010" patch with FFFG as a priming powder.
@finflask1862
@finflask1862 Жыл бұрын
I only fired a few shots with it. I had around a 6 in group at 30 or so yards. When I was loading it it felt loose. I think I am going to up the patch thickness to .018.

I wish mine worked that well. It’s 50/50 if it will go off or not. Pulled the trigger 5 times on the biggest buck of my life and got a flash in the pan every time. And that’s with a white lightning vent liner and 3f goex powder.

Well I’m having the same issues now. So I feel your pain. That’s why I haven’t done a sighting in video yet. I’m pretty sure I’m going to upgrade the lock to an L&R replacement. They are around two hundo, but what everyone says is the barrels traditions makes are excellent. This makes me feel good about doing the upgrade

That's a nice looking rifle but you might wanna tighten the ram rod tension spring cuz when you put the ram rod back in it bounces. Not good cuz you might lose the rod.

I am planning on going out to develop a proper load for this rifle, but hunting season is still on and that is taking priority for the time being. I’m sure the sights are off, I just kind of popped them on so they would be there.

Nice , but ball is a little loose and it seems you didn’t install the detent for the ram rod cause that fell into place with no resistance. But I can honestly say at least yours shoots. I can’t get the flash to ignite the main charge on mine. We’ve gone over everything too. The size of the flash hole, the hight of the flash hole , the type of powder in the pan and the damn thing won’t do anything other make a puff of smoke out of the pan. But my ram rod fits snug though. LOL.
@finflask1862

Yeah I have been getting a lot of comments about the ram rod. I forgot to install it. The ball with the pre cut patches I had where definitely loose. I’m actually currently having the same issue with ignition. I’m planning on upgrading to a L&R lock to see if that helps

My Traditions did the same thing. Check the inletting. Mine was terrible. I had to do some more carving out. The lock was hitting inside on the wood, dampening the spring power. I bought an Land R lock and it does not work. The angle for the trigger does not align.
