So much of the accuracy depends on what the gun likes...ball size, patch, lube...just have to lock it in through trial and error. It's amazing to think that people depended on this type of gun for food, defense, war. Incredible.

I have a Traditions Tennessee .50 caliber flintlock, and mine would get a slight hangfire like yours using FFG Goex as the main charge, .490 roundball and a .010" patch. Once I switched to Goex FFFG as the main charge, the hangfires went away and it has better lock time and ignition with the same size roundball and patch. I also coned the barrel on that gun so a short starter isn't necessary and you can just use the ramrod. I picked up a Traditions Kentucky flintlock .50 today, I plan on trying the same load set up in that gun as the Tennessee and once I get that worked out I will cone the barrel on that gun too.

Totally off subject but what did it cost to build a cabin like that ? I got 5.5 acres in a secluded valley I’m wanting to put a small cabin on. What you have looks perfect! I already got water, electric, and septic system down there. Just need to build or buy a cabin to put there.

Well, looking back on this now, I've had my Traditions Kentucky Flintlock, same as your gun, over a year now. I found a few things. One, it prefers FFFG Goex to FFG Goex, the 3F gives it better and more consistent ignition. I took and very slightly drilled out the touchhole. With a good, sharp flint, I can get a good 10 shots before I may get a misfire. I still get the occasional hangfire, but that's the nature of a flintlock. I can tell you mine is very accurate out to 125 yards, I've shot man sized silhouette targets out that far and the Traditions Kentucky puts them in the middle offhand with regularity. I coned the barrel, makes it much easier to load a patched roundball without the need for a short started. I prime it with the same 3F I use for the main charge, ignition is just fine. It prefers a .490" ball and a .010" patch lubed with Bore Butter. I've won a couple of medals in blackpowder matches with it. It's a great gun for the money.

Your bess should shoot better with a tighter ball. Your best ball may not work well with military cartridge. It will never shoot as small as a rifle gun, but should keep it all in the black. This is Tuesday. I went to the range Monday, got back late and did a quick clean. Yesterday had the cabin fever and made a deep reclean. Then had ‘make and mend’ day, similar to your readying to shoot. Looks like you had fun. Watching your vid was almost as much fun as shooting there with you.

I like your spread and "range" a lot, don't know about the -15 tho. Sir there is NO need for that rifle-gun to be so tough to load. Or to have to slide-hammer that ramrod like that. What size ball are you using? Anything above .490 is unnecessary. With an 18 thou pillow ticking patch and proper lube, it should slide down with one maybe two pushes. I use Ballistol as a lube, mixed with H2O, tho I might skip the H2O in -15 deg. Never have shot a Muzzle gun in that kind of cold, not sure I want to. Anyway, good shootin'.

.490 ball, with a .010" patch pre lubed with "wonderlube". I have a "moose milk" mix that ive yet to try at home. But i also presume it would freeze in this weather. The load always pushes fluidly down the barrel on that gun for the first shot. But after that, the dirty GOEX powder fouls up the bore FAST. Someday i should try an even smaller ball. And maybe patches with more H2O content.
@williamkoppos7039
@williamkoppos7039 4 жыл бұрын
@@3DVIDEOSMurray I gave up on that "Wonderlube" a while ago, but even that should load OK with .490 and .010. Also forgot to mention I use fffg (3f) for every gun I have. It definitely burns cleaner with less fouling. Give it a try. Might try this with my 2 band Enfield Sunday. Stay warm.

Click, flash, no boom. A couple of times. That's why I stay with percussion lock but that's just my preference. And that would make me nervous pouring the powder from the horn in spite of the measure and cut-off on the horn..I measure the powder using a separate measure I made from deer antler..never pour direct from a powder horn no matter if a cut-off on the horn. Hang the powder measure from my neck with a leather strap and it's right there handy. Muzzle loaders still a ton of fun to shoot.

In muzzleloading one gets what one pays for. Good locks and barrels make target shooting much more enjoyable and reliable. One can’t do better than a Jim Chambers flintlock. And good barrels like Rice to name one. I’ve been shooting and hunting with flintlocks for over 55 years and they are just as reliable as percussion locks and a good quality tuned Flintlock with a touchhole liner has nearly as fast of an ignition as a percussion lock.

Good old fun shooting. Good habit is to clean your touch hole/flash hole after every shot or second. Keep the priming powder away from the touch hole so you dont get a wick effect more of a flash. Lot lest delay. Keep shooting

I know it is freezing cold and you swabbed between shots, but you should really use a powder measure to measure and pour your powder in your gun instead of directly from your horn. I have never had a stray ember in my barrel in my 44 years of shooting black powder... but that is a recipe for disaster if any of us ever did and it ignited all the powder in that horn. Great video and love the period clothing. Keep you and your powder warm and dry.

There is a brass powder measure attached to the spout of the horn.
@raytribble8075
@raytribble8075 3 жыл бұрын
Yes sir, I saw that. But if you have an ember left over from your previous shot and it ignites the powder from your brass measure attached to your horn... it can cause the entire thing to blow up. I was just making a safety recommendation. When we teach new muzzle loading shooters the sport, we always show them to pour from the horn (or bulk container) into a separate powder measure that is not attached and then pour from the isolated measure into the bore. But thank you for the reply.

Me and my grandpa don't use measuring cups or patches. We do it like back in the day with an old American Can Co. "Quick Loader" that you just puff a bit of powder in the barrel and drop the ball in there and shove it down. He said in his own words that "back in the day nobody wasted time with those dumbass patches" 😂

@@natebumppo4929 i said i meant. and passive agressive has been a term for a long time, Bumppo. Is that Swedish? Dont ram the hell out of the ball. Put a mark on your rod so you know its all the way down. Should not have to smack it 4-6 times... that puts defects into the projectile.

Nice Capote , I have one I had made by a Iraq refugee , he's like 20 years old looks 12 . He grew up helping his dad who owned a Tailor shop. Let me tell you what that guy knows his business. He made it perfect . He added wool to areas that needed extra and took out where useless. It turned out spectacular . I have a custom Fowler Flintlock .72 or 12 ga. and a side lock and an inline both 50 cal. A lot of people have problems with flintlocks because of the touch hole , just like you. #a try checking the pan and hole to see if they line up perfectly , most don't , probably 90 % don't. So if you add more fine powder to your pan instead of your load powder , that should help with hesitation . Another trick is snow ,rain ,humid days stick a small bird feather into the touch hole ,it'll keep it dry and clean till ready to shoot. Also never ever use pre-lube patches like you have . Go with linen only and cut off with a small knife and try and use the same type linen always. A cool B.P. site and store is ""Track of the Wolf. "" Lot of very cool stuff.
