Around-the-World phase IV, part 5: the longest flight of the whole trip, 2027 nautical miles from Hilo, Hawaii to Monterey, California, using 2 supplemental tanks in the cabin. Preparation included finding a day with tailwinds. First attempt failed, had to return to Hawaii after 90 minutes, as the HF radio malfunctioned. Too much fuel to land, had to burn fuel to decrease weight. Fixed the radio issue, and succeeded the next day.

My dad and I flew from Illinois to Germany in a Cessna 210 back in the early 2000's before he passed away from cancer (his bucket list) I had to get my private and instrument rating just to do it with him because of the Morphine he was taking for pain. That was a hairy flight also. Great job Sir!!!

Thank you Aviatore71!! Your story is amazing! Your dad is so lucky to have had a son like you, and vice-versa... The emotions of arriving in a different place, country or even continent in a small airplane are incomparable! Thank you for sharing your experience, and God bless you and your dad.

I worked with a gentleman back in 2001. He used to fly for Pan Am back in the 50's and 60's. He was a navigator and told stories of how they would navigate over the pacific using the stars just like the sailors of old. Once you got within 50 to 100 miles of large airports they could pick up a radio beacon they could use to true up their path. They were pretty good at it apparently as almost no planes were lost. He stated he spent most of the flights sleeping and would get woken up at a few intervals to do checks, overall he it was a great time he said.

There’s a book called In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. It chronicles a voyage of a whaler in the early 1800s. It’s amazing how they could navigate such large distances without modern navigation and the amount of time it took. Their average trip length lasted 2 years at that time.

M C foolhardy without ETOPS
@MC-rh3fc
@MC-rh3fc 4 жыл бұрын
I think you have that backwards. We don’t fly ETOPS and therefore can make alternates in either direction. Our ETPs ensure we can proceed to an appropriate alternate for engine failure, depressurization, or medical issues. If we used an ETOPS route we would be in no-mans land.
@douglasb5046
@douglasb5046 4 жыл бұрын
M C waaay more involved with ETOPS than diverting. eg aircraft Mx for each trip, dispatchers, pilots and mechanics specially trained, certificated for ETOPS. Aircraft system anomalies noted and logged for each and every ETOPS flight of the entire fleet with ETOPS downgraded if necessary Etc etc
@MC-rh3fc
@MC-rh3fc 4 жыл бұрын
And we don’t do ETOPS crossings therefore none of that applies. Our circles overlap. 😀😀😀

The DA50, DA42 Twinstar and the DA62 get within the ballpark of 10 gallons per hour. The DA20 gets around 5, and the DA40 sees around 8 per hour. Overall, Diamond knows how to balance fuel efficiency with speed.
