Researchers from King’s College London and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust are leading the first ever study of psilocybin in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The study has been conceived and developed independently by the researchers and will take place at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London. It is funded by COMPASS Pathways and co-sponsored by King’s IoPPN and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
The aim of the research is to explore how specific brain pathways involving the chemical serotonin may work in adults with ASD. Serotonin is involved in many of the body’s functions including mood, sleeping patterns, appetite and socialization and previous research has shown a connection between this brain chemical and ASD.

I decided to buy an ounce for backup, but haven’t yet felt the need to take any more since then.

Fantastic. I'm autistic and as a late teen had a big dose of psilocybin. It made me feel connected, loving, compassionate and part of a bigger picture rather than separate and different from everyone else which I had done previously. And you never go back.... I wouldn't say the shrooms 'cured me' but they certainly helped me adapt and grow. I feel deep gratitude for that experience.

I had psycadelics when I was about 17 or so and I felt some of the feelings you describe. I don't know if they strayed with me - or if I would have been how I am now without them. I also used strong illicit opiates for years and was far less stressed and I feel like I was far more able to cope with the stresses of a workplace than I am not without them, Of course illicit opiates create their own stresses, but I feel like they substantially helped me cope with many day to day issues that I really strugfgle with now. I am much more withdrawn from friends, family and society generally now and have far more issues at work around emotional regulation, executive function and melt downs.

Upon my first shroom trip, my depression disappeared overnight. It shifted my perspective on the way I viewed myself. It showed me that I was stuck in one way of thinking. This was unhealthy mentally and it was affecting me physically. Within 6 months of the trip, my chronic lower back pain disappeared, I'm sure it was due to tension and stress, and hasn't returned.

It’s heavily suspected that I’m autistic and psilocybin was the single most effective mental health medication I’ve ever used. In desperation, I tried it last year after a period of extreme stress I couldn’t handle. It activated “admin mode” and corrected garbage data in my brain, and afterward…actual, real peace for the first time in my life. No ADHD or depression symptoms. No pain. No anxiety or self-doubt. Just chill and accepting of who I was as a person, flaws and all. No more trying to hide from yourself. Extremely reparative, and lasted about a week before symptoms started returning, though milder. In that week I was in a great mood, had enough energy to have a personality and actually get things done and go places. It was great.

Really interested in the potential that psilocybin has to help autistic people, but as an autistic person, I feel a disconnect from how autism is talked about in this video. I think psilocybin has amazing potential at helping autistic people to understand themselves, but ultimately this treatment is only going to be affective if more work is done to improve the societal conditions for the equality of autistic people. I think it could help autistic people with depression and anxiety, as talking therapies and CBT is less effective, but I felt this video didn’t acknowledge this context, and I therefore felt it to be quite ambiguous as to whether it wanted to work ‘with’ autism, or ‘against’ it. Whether the goal was to maintain autistic characteristics while lessening poor mental symptoms, or whether there’s an underlying intention that autistic traits are inherently troubled and need fixing.

I suffered a spinal cord injury while working rescue on a traffic accident. I covered the body of a 9 yr old girl thrown down an embankment. Then I fell. I was EMS heavy rescue for 26yrs. I was a strength athlete at 42 I just finished the World Masters Highland Games and National masters Strongman. My career my health all gone. I thankfully can get around i have lost my strength. My son has never spoke, he also has epilepsy. During the peak developmental years he was having 50 seizures a day. He never potty trained. He has to be cleaned and diapered many times a day. However he is the picture of health. 6’5” 250lbs. His sense of order is punishing. He only eats fast food for the most part. He only eats during his rides, he can’t bathe, never held a fork or spoon, hates clothes. He loves music and contemporary Christian is 90% of what he turns to. He can play music on phone and can look at pics on iPad. It’s at least $30 a day food gas before inflation. The irony is his brother is only 2 yrs older and maintains a lifetime 4.0 and still holds a 4.0 in medical school at 22. My wife still works ER 30Yrs as a Critical Care Nurse. My sons name is Peyton. He gets to attend school at special ED. They failed him it’s nothing more than babysitting. He sits in a rocking chair most time last few years. It gives us a break to get things done because he commands attention. He is so happy, never Sinned, hurt anyone, never felt hatred, jealousy, envy, money means nothing only Love. He gets up every day as it was the first day in a beautiful world he traveled a thousand years to reach. I spent years in nursing homes and the abuse and neglect is horrible. But for a bright shining young man with a pure heart to be doped up and tied down to wither and die will not happen to my son. We are terrified of dying and leaving him to such a fate when he walks a rainbow trail. Thank you all for the time to comment and show empathy and support. Bless you in your endeavors, pray for us. Pray for my boys. He has another year of school then it’s over. We can’t afford or find trusted competent sitters he is just too much to handle. I may be forced even to move in nursing home as his room mate and give my life up at home. God help me!

I also have bipolar disorder which I would like to try unconventional plants-herbs for--It has been hell all these years-- so many ups and downs. I’m autistic and bipolar 2. When I first started use the small amount of psilocybin on a regular basis I was hoping that it could help to treat my depression. And sure it’s really helped me a lot. But after month I started to realize that my autistic symptoms started to get better. I was able to meet new people and I wasn’t so exhausted after that meeting. I was able to try new things and I was able to work without burnout. Still my bipolar needs some medication, to cope with hypomania but after a year with psilocybin my life became more stable, happier than ever before.

@@carriebartkowiak To be fair, maybe some of OP's family is not as particular in their wording as the young man with the curly ginger hair in this video. I mean, seriously, if we're going to split hairs here. Now, I strongly suspect I am on the spectrum, towards the Asperger's side, although I haven't had a formal diagnosis. At most, a long time psychiatrist said I had "autistic tendencies", but he also had a bad rap for off-label medicating the hell out of his patients, including me. My point is yes, I am very frustrated with my experience on how people treat me, my son with a diagnosis of high-functioning ASD, and other people I know on the spectrum. I do say that I've seen people make an effort to understand, however, and that is what is ultimately important to me.

@dustinwarender8955
@dustinwarender8955 Жыл бұрын
Well Petra some people believe being autistic your brain can be adjusted like with many other psychological issues through either medication or behavioral therapy. It's not something people are just stuck with. So having autism and then the symptoms going away would indicate it could be treated.. and I speak from experience obviously. Sanity and conscious don't come from within you. They come from the growth of society and social norms around you and you being able to conform to those. No person is sane but we all know how to act like we are. But if we didn't have the social norms to teach us and the ability to know what social norms to follow if we didn't have other people around us imagine how quite insane you would actually be. People would think you are autistic. Take a look at Victor Crum who was raised by animals. He may have actually been autistic yes but also being raised by animals you're not going to learn speech or know how to read in a Marriott of other things. and in that instance you would appear autistic. This could be happening with humans if certain types of childhood neglect go unnoticed. A child could come up to imitate and be classified as autistic. Hopefully they wouldn't be stuck with it

I’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD and autism in my 40’s. Approximately 25 years ago, I consumed 500 psilocybe semilanceata mushrooms - that’s not an exaggeration. It was not a good experience (understatement!😂). I was completely enveloped by an incredibly complex and geometrically detailed sphere, complete with auditory hallucinations that resembled a late 60’s avant-garde electronic music score. I couldn’t speak because I couldn’t recall any words, and I couldn’t recall any previous memories. Truly terrifying! I thought I’d never return to normal. Thankfully I did with no lasting consequences other than the memory of an incredibly intense experience that’s difficult to truly describe. I later found out that 80 mushrooms was considered a high dose.

I am autistic and a user of psilocybin, as it is the only substance that helps me to regulate my condition at the root cause level. My mother noticed a sudden change for the better in me after after only a few mushrooms experiences; So much so that I told her what I was doing and she was thrilled for me, bless her and she wanted to know more and the idea was embraced without the expected judgement for using an illegal controlled drug for self medicating purposes.❤ If I had to describe how I feel after a mushroom experience, then I would say it is as if I have been set free from what I can only describe as a 'spirit jail' and made whole, both mentally and physically. I can feel my body as a whole being. I can feel the blood coursing through my veins, I can feel my arms and legs, and the strength that I have in them with my slouching posture corrected and straighten. My stimming and hand flapping habits go away and I feel energised, free and deeply empathetic towards others with a mental clarity that I could never imagine was possible. I gain the ability to imagine other people's perspectives which both baffles me and excites me in ways that I cannot even describe. I even gain full spacial awareness and the motivation to go out and enjoy my life. The effects are felt for a week or so after the experience wears off (for me of course - everyone is different, so I count my blessings here) and my autistic self returns - the clumsiness, sloughing and verbal communication issues come back but every time I've learned something new about life that I did not know before the experience which I get to keep forever about social interaction which makes me feel less awkward about myself. I know that ethically, promoting the use of substances which have a potential to cause psychosis in those predisposed is a very grey area, but I cannot express how deeply transforming psilocybin has been for me as a person. I love being open and frank about using this medicine in a responsible way and I truly hope that one day soon we autistic people can experience clinically administered psilocybin therapies and be let out of 'spirit jail' forever.

From your testimony it must be enlightening but also frustrating,as you’ve experience being more NT,whilst at the same time knowing those changes aren’t going to last long term

They will become isolated and forgotten. Never seeing their friends with whom they shared life with. We need top quality motivated people to stimulate and enrich the lives of people like my Son. The public school systems are barely able now to accommodate the general population. The basic sound fundamentals of academics and behavior taught for generations is virtually non existent as just surviving a day at school and the realization of being a man or a woman has become half the goal for many. Fascinating, I was diagnosed with autism later in life and have experience with MDMA, what I experience is the return of social skills that had been lost / turned off by autism. When taking MDMA I can have normal conversations in which I can read their expressions, body language, I understand my own body language; it really is quite remarkable because normally I am the total opposite. A genuine fish out of water in a social setting. I also have experience with LSD and psilocybin mushrooms which opened up a whole new world of abilities; but nothing to do with socialising! Between the lot I would say MDMA helped the most with communication, LSD the most with physical movement. Mushrooms? Not sure, I never felt "alone" even though I was!

I had a 11 month "peak" of mental illness when I did not leave my room. I was searching for any way out, I tried all the "legal" methods which made me worse (cbt emdr antipsychotics) . What I do remember is one day. Ordering some mushrooms and trying them and the first time in months I actually stretched my body and felt amazing and I actually wanted to go outside and feel the wind on my face... I remember smiling for the first time in months, almost as if I realised how easily they changed my mood. It was illegal therfore I did not/have not brought them since (the website shut down)... I am slowly returning to normacy, yet I wonder if micro dosing mushrooms might just actually be a cure to my psychosis. (it is still ruining my life) I really wish it was legal. Its criminal to criminalise natural drugs that may and have saved lives. The studies being done now should have been done in the late 60s/early 70s but I guess the pharmaceutical companies could not make enough profit off natural occurring drugs. My only turmoil stems from my religions anti intoxicants stance otherwise I probably would be micro dosing legal or not, and I am 100% sure I would be better then I am without them. Just like thc has been taken out of weed and the cbd is used medicinally, I hope we can do that with all drugs, or atleast allow for unbiased proper studies with the focal point being care/cures/recover of humans and not profit.

Nothing about us without us. As an autistic adult I appreciate the research being done into helping the autistic become more at ease, functional, and accepted in this neurotypical world. That said, it's unethical to perform such reasearch without autistic people leading it, or at the very least being consulted and having veto power over protocols. We autistics do not have chemical imbalances. We are not sick or disabled. We are biologically different, and attempts to normalize these differences is eugenics. As long as the autistic lead efforts to foster understanding and accpetance and accomodation of these differences, things will improve for us. But if such efforts are lead by neurotypical scientists - no matter how well intentioned - they will lead to further harm. Psychiatry and psychology have a long and awful history in this regard. Imagine trying to help gay people "balance their brain chemistry" so they can "get married and lead normal lives". Imagine trying to help black people assimilate into American culture better by changing the color of their skin after designating being black as a "melatonin imbalance" that can be fixed through skin bleaching. Nothing about us without us. It's that simple.

This kind of therapy is really difficult to develop in the UK because society is so anal about drugs in general that the materials needed are so hard to get hold of. This drug and also CBD can help so much with all manner of brain stress. If they could be set for accessible and approved for safe medical use we wouldn't have such problems with street drugs and alcohol addiction. People would have something safe to go to that actually helps instead of making things worse. I say this as an autistic person who suffers many other conditions. In terms of sensation, it felt like being blackout drunk without actually being drunk and still being in full control of my body. My child has Autism and MM is banned in my country. I would definitely want to try thid myself, before I micro dose my child. Would something like 0.5 grams per day be safe for a 12 year child? Hope I find some local supplier.

Very interesting. Ottowa majoral cannidate Jreg introduced the idea that autism and schizo are on the same spectrum. Shrooms would definitely help someone with the tism branch their thinking in a more schizo way and get a more normal perpective.

Hey, so if you’re a family member of an autistic person, you don’t have first hand experience. Please don’t say that, your lived experience is by proxy. Also “autistic” is not a dirty word, autism is not a disease. Many autistic people in this day and age prefer identity first over person first language.

stop looking to find a 'solution' to him. he is NOT broken or diseased. He is mistreated, misunderstood, disrespected... and hearing people around you all your life fretting about the 'problem' and 'disorder' and 'inability' and 'impariments'... that screws up your mind badly. what you are seeing is a minor few differences - almost all in terms of sensory acuity and sensitivity - being responded to poorly by others, and a barrage of gaslighting ad shame and 'teratment' to 'cure' resulting in a range of injuries to mental health. Stop trying to fix him. He is NOT broken, he is misunderstood. You disagree? Ergo you are a part of the problem. You wanna reframe your understanding... YOU take the shrooms. Trust me on this

You have 2nd hand experience as a family member of an autistic person. You have first-hand experience of how it makes you uncomfortable to not understand how and why we are the way we are. Please guide the study to help the world accommodate us, not on how to make all of you more comfortable around us.

Shrooms are a powerful psychedelic with a long history of recreational, medicinal, and spiritual use worldwide. Still, psychedelics can be unpredictable, and experts advise anyone interested in using them to start with a low dose and seek counseling from a medical professional... For medical guidelines.

@@lilianparle4822 it was a joke, y'all. I've done a few psilocybin trips as a much younger person than I am now, which didn't "cure" my autism, nor would I want it to. I know what they are and what it is and all that. I was more doing a tongue-in-cheek thing because people love the idea of being able to give autistic people certain drugs to make us behave the way they want us to. It won't make us "less autistic" if we're given drugs. We'll just be autistic and on drugs. And another side of this is neurotypical people assume that all autistic people are sheltered rule followers. When a lot of us who can live independently (or somewhat independently) experiment with things like this quite often. Most autistic people I know have a history of drug use. In all seriousness though, I do think a lot of people, not just autistic people, could benefit from psychedelic microdosing.
