Obi, unless I'm missing something, in CrossFit you want to maximise your total work output (which is related to how much oxygen you consume per minute), not your work output per kg of bodyweight (which is what VO2max is - how much oxygen you consume per minute PER KG OF BODYWEIGHT). Unlike in cycling and running, your bodyweight isn't as absolutely determinate as to your performance in CrossFit. Losing bodyweight will artificially increase your VO2max number, but you aren't suddenly going to get fitter just because you went on a cut... In fact, with less strength, perhaps your max power output could even decrease...

Interesting take. Makes sense.
@riddles551
@riddles551 3 жыл бұрын
@S MM yeah definitely, but the trainer did say (perhaps jokingly) that you could increase your VO2max by losing weight, which, while technically true, won't make you any fitter (won't increase your cardiovascular output), which is what people use vo2max as a proxy for. Your metabolism is afterall just the controlled combustion of energy stores in your body - the more oxygen you feed that fire, the faster you can do work. Measuring how much oxygen you're using in the combustion process is what you should be maximising in order to increase power output. A measure of how much oxygen you need per mass of bodyweight isn't very useful in that circumstance. Look at Eddie Hall's world record Grace time (or Annabel?) - huge power output, probably quite a low vo2max

@@riddles551 vo2 max doesn't actually increase, the vo2 max relative to the bodyweight would increase. That's why in some cases (like these) it would be better to look at the absolute VO2 max and not the relative value.

Interesting... There is a body type / body weight that favors certain sports. For example, Noah Olsen was not happy with his performance in the crossfit games. He decided to lose weight and maybe lose some strength to have better success with the cardio pieces. Will be interesting to see how he will do in the next cross fit games.
@riddles551
@riddles551 2 жыл бұрын
@@maartenmidden1651 I'm assuming he lost weight not necessarily for the cardio pieces (his cardio output, e.g. lactate threshold, will presumably not change much from having lost weight) but specifically for movements where work required is proportional to body weight, such as all of the gymnastics movements, running and so on

How you respond. I’m 50. Training weights & teaching Gracie jiu Jitsu for 22 years. My shoulders are finished from mma. I’ve decided to train 4 compounds 3times a week , go on TRT 100ml a week. Drop my weights to 75%of BWT. Slow with accentuated contraction and slowdown with a few strips. No more than 30minutes with warm ups and stretching. My question,leg press or front squats ? I can’t get my left rotor cuff behind the bar on standard squats. I dig your personality. You seem pragmatic. Your insights into muscle, glute involvement on iether movement will be helpful. Not going to increase weights, just keep the range in 3 sets 5 reps, increase to 10 reps slowly and add 2.5 kg and drop to 5 again. Help me out. You’re a smart guy. I have 2 deployments left in Peshawar and my Delts don’t need surgery but I need to access my Glock 19 and can’t afford to make mistakes. Anyway, your help on my leg press vs front squats is important. Thanks. Love & Light Ronin Gantz

fairly sure that vo2 max is lower on a bike vs assault bike. This is for the same reason cross country skiers score very high vo2 max numbers.

Cross country skiier here. I've done many many of these tests in my life. Highest result i've got on an inclined treadmill walking with poles is 71 ml/min/kg but in a cross-country skiing test i've hit 81 ml/min/kg. So you're right!

Would be interested to know your VO2max on a treadmill - legs will always stop you first on the ergo! You'd also be able to take in more oxygen in an upright posture when running (not hunched over). But amazing job overall ☺ x

I don’t think people realize how good that number is for the amount of muscle he has. When I was 18 I was measured in a lab at 6ft 94kg at 13% bodyfat, so a good amount of muscle for my age, and my VO2 max was 35 lmao, complete shit. I know many other bodybuilders tested who weigh 100-110kg with seemingly decent cardio score around 40-45, which is about average. After focusing a lot more on cardio and general fitness for the past year mine went up to 48, weighing 100kg @12% bodyfat at 21, Goal is to get it up to over 50-55 by the end of this year with hard consistent training. Point being, that’s a great score considering his size and he could probably get it up to 65 with more training, which would be absolutely insane.
@dkny9954
@dkny9954 2 жыл бұрын
hey sorry to break it to you but 35 to 55 is not a feasible jump especially if you were already at 13% bf. It's more genetics and gaining anything from 10-25% is great.
@Answeriz42
@Answeriz42 2 жыл бұрын
@@dkny9954 I disagree and have proved this wrong. When I was at 35 I was completely detrained cardiovascularly. Could barely run a mile, and had high blood pressure from eating so much to be as big and as strong as possible. After switching to a more balanced approach to training overall performance but not even VO2 max specific, my VO2 increased to 48, and since i tested that my cardio improvements haven’t slowed down, and expect im in the 50s now, even with more muscle. Your baseline doesn’t always determine your genetic potential. Your genetics are also involved in how well you respond to training regardless of your starting point, and considering my progress I must be above average in that. Point being never be discouraged with a low baseline performance, cause you’ll never know how good you could be until you try.

Doing cardio at really high heart rates. I bike at a really high level and my vo2 max workouts are all out for 3-4 minutes which has me at 180+ hr for the whole time. Keep in mind my max is 207.

I wish you would put the Insta handles for both James and Luke. Without that data, we can't find them! BTW: you may not be the fittest person in the world, but you are truly an inspiration to every person on the planet! You get out of your comfort zone and do other things. I just wish I had your courage to try things (bouldering, Judo, gymnastics, rugby training, etc...). You are far more athletic than you give yourself credit for. That's probably the "young you". Today, you're the man you always dreamed of being. Congratulations on that accomplishment. I look forward to seeing the man you'll become. You'll be a beast of a fit athlete!

I’m a little skeptical of this score as far as VO2max on this machine.. to me a 1.5 mile timed run would give a 99% correlation compared to the rest of the population with similar age profiles.. it’s apart of The Cooper Fitness test and used by all branches of military and most of law enforcement.. nonetheless Obi’s definitely a beast and no shade was meant by constructive criticism.. Great channel!
