In this video I talk about how I go about selecting my jigs for slow jigging. I discuss shapes, colors and how I use them for each situation and fish I target. I discuss how each of the jigs differ from one to the other, what to use for some species and how some factors affect the jigs, what people are doing wrong and what the solutions are.
I also talk about how I buy jigs, how I categorize and organize them. I introduce a very easy system for organizing jigs and using them, which jigs I drop first for what target I want and how to not buy too many jigs for what you think you need.
I also mention one of the biggest mistakes people do when they go slow jigging - and I recommend the solution to this issue as well. - this is an issue that isnt a problem in Asia , but is a very big problem for most people attempting to go slow jigging in the US.

I mention this in a lot of my videos. There is no such thing as slow jigging with a spinning set up in water over 30m, even then it wouldn't really reach the bottom as fast as you want it to.

Thanks Kit, just the video I was looking for. Wish you did it months ago because I went out and bought 50+ jigs with various sizes and weight and haven't even caught one rock fish yet but at least I have 3-4 of each types and various weights. I use PE #0.8 (0.145mm, 25lbs) with 200g Medium profile at 200-300 ft depth, and I have a hard time staying vertical. I'll try going thinner line this year (PE 0.6 @ 0.128mm, and maybe even PE 0.4 @ 0.100mm) line to see if I can solve the heavy scope fishing in Southern California waters. What is the rule of thumb for weight? I heard 1g per foot of depth, but I also hear 1g per meter of depth. I know there is no 100% right answer, but what does your experience recommend?

@@_user8335 the problem with a place like that is that if you do something "proper" they tell you it's wrong coz they do things different - by different I mean it's really not the standard. the standard for slow jigging is PE 2...you can stretch it out to PE 2.5 The measurement you use for the depth and jig is 1g PER METER. If you don't use PE 2/2.5 this measurement system doesn't work. Game type slow j max 300g or max 400g and an ocea jigger 2000. Great info!I am going to Maldives this summer and bought a Saltiga 15hl planning on using it for lighter jigs from 80-160g, I was going to spool it 300m of pe4 because I thought I need stronger line since I am not deep dropping anyways, might as well get more strength. They have some monster groupers from 8kg to 35kg+(probably not caught in shallow water tho, not sure). Do you think I should go for 400m of pe3 or 300m of pe4? Thanks!
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit Жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, on lighter jigs, I would not use thick line. PE 3 is already too thick for PE 3. for that range, I would be using PE 1.5. If I was to use PE 3 I would be using heavier jigs and a heavier system to go with it. I normally use PE 2 and max out at PE 2.5 and have one reel spooled with PE 3 to use with very heavy jigs for very deep drops.

@@kevinjiang3251 slow jigging is a finesse technique. You can fast jig and use thicker line to catch big ones. there are situational exceptions...the largest AJ caught on slow jigging with PE 2 was way more than 15kg.

The problem is that most of the people going for deep jigging have not yet mastered knotting. With pe1.5 to 2 it is really challenging to land a big fish over 10 kg if you don’t trust your knots. That’s why most of the anglers i met are putting pe3 or 2.5 for slow jigging. They end up doing something other than slow jigging… For slow jigging using low pe braid, you must put a PR knot on your braid/leader and a TN knot as a terminal knot. Otherwise, go for thicker lines.

I had the same question as well. Like the other day itself, I went out and bought 20+ jigs in different weight and colors but same design(slow jig). For example I bought type x jig in 40g , 50g and 60g!!! Do you think it’s worth it?
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit Жыл бұрын
Think of it this way, you are not the one to decide on what the fish bites - what you can do is only find something they might be willing to bite. With that in mind, would you, as a person, eat a doughnut of the same flavor, only colored differently and comes in different sizes? You are limiting yourself. You can't just increase the weight and think everything will go to plan - almost always never does, so you go prepared and actually have different offerings - A slim jig moves faster, has different movement than a short wider jig, this might be the trigger the fish are looking for in that particular time...if you don't have that and the guys around you do - you can sit around and watch, a very good lesson to learn.
@ACEFishing12
@ACEFishing12 Жыл бұрын
@@TheFishingKit ohh yeah. Make sense. Hope fishes do have the same reasoning😂. Cheers But how do you choose you weight? Like does the theory of 1g per metre works or it’s just that a slow pitch jig should always fall vertical meaning you can use a 200 g at 40m depth?
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit Жыл бұрын
@@ACEFishing12 Fish are less complicated than people Ace. People make fishing complicated - for example, you can catch fish easily by using bait and a handline...why do you spend a lot of money trying to catch them with lead? Firstly, you need to understand what a lot of people don't really understand about Slow Jigging - it is a finesse technique developed to produce strikes when the fish are not that active (weather, tidal changes and a lot of other factors etc.) Secondly, It is a Japanese system developed with their technology and measurements - Slow jigging is heavily influenced by the rod, reel and the diameter of the line you use. So - the 1g per meter is a solid guideline...But as soon as you use anything other than Japanese spec line, things get complicated.

I noticed the big argument about American braid breaking strain. American line rated strength is knot strength, which is perfectly sensible. 20lb line when a hook is tied on with a Palomar knot will break at the knot around 20lb. Who goes fishing without a hook or knot?? No one. An FG knot will have more strength. Japanese line will say 20 lb and break much lower. I don't see any advantage in this system. Braid is a recent invention with poor knot strength originally, about 50%. 20lb mono knotted breaks around 80% of that 20lb.
@TheFishingKit
@TheFishingKit Ай бұрын
So..do you connect your hook to your braid? Coz for us, we use an FG or PR to a leader then put the jig on the leader. How do you use a palomar knot on braid for jigging? If American braid is rated at knot strength, then why is it rated via tensile strength and not labeled knot strength? You can find tests being conducted on these lines in the IGFA youtube channel, where can we view videos on these tests on knots that are not on jury rigged equipment? Where do you get your data?
@andrewrollins4898
@andrewrollins4898 2 ай бұрын
What you fail to mention is that American braid label may say 6lb. test and may break at 20 pounds. Pe says 20-pound test and breaks at 20 pounds. Why the deception? Why not be transparent and say breaking strength of the line is more based upon the dimeter of the line, instead of what the label says? Do you want truth, look up the breaking strengths of the lines yourself. You may find American braids are much stronger according to their diameter than Pe lines. And don't get me started on the number of strands in the braid...American braids wipe the floor with Pe lines.
