A very prayerful reaction 👼🏾🙏🏾! I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to Aretha Franklin before: Willing To Forgive. I Say A Little Prayer was released as the second single from Aretha Franklin's 1968 album: Aretha Now. It was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It was produced by Jerry Wexler. The song reached #3 on the R&B chart, #10 on the Hot 100 and #18 on the Cash Box 100. In 2021, the song was listed at No. 117 on Rolling Stone's "Top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Aretha took this song and made it her own. She brought the song to life and put a lot more soul into it than the original version which was sung by Dionne Warwick in 1967. The Sweet Inspirations (Cissy Houston, Estelle Brown, Myrna Smith) are the backing singers this song. The song: "I Say A Little Prayer", was originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1967 and reached #4 on the Hot 100 and #8 on the R&B chart. The song returned to the Pop and R&B Top Ten in the fall of 1968 via a recording by Aretha Franklin taken from her 1968 album: Aretha Now. Aretha Franklin and background vocalists: The Sweet Inspirations, were singing the song for fun while rehearsing the songs intended for the album when the viability of their recording of the song became apparent, significantly reinvented from the format of the Dionne Warwick original via the prominence of Clayton Ivey's piano work. Aretha Franklin song version was intended for the B-side of the July 1968 single release: "The House That Jack Built", but began to accrue its own radio airplay that August. There are several harmonic differences between the Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin song versions. While the Dionne Warwick original was sung in G major, Aretha Franklin's transposes up a tone to A major. The chord under "Say a little prayer for..." in the bridge is substantially different (F#m7, or v7 of III, in the original; D, or IV, in Aretha Franklin's version) and the third-inversion seventh in the bass under "...and ever..." in the chorus from the original (D major/C#) is a more conventional chord V (E major) in Aretha Franklin's arrangement. In October 1968 the song reached number ten on the Hot 100 and number three on the R&B singles chart. The same month the single was certified Gold (one million copies sold) by the RIAA. The song became Aretha Franklin's ninth and last consecutive Hot 100 top 10 hit on the Atlantic label. Franklin's "Prayer" has a special significance in her UK career, as with its September 1968 No. 4 peak it became Aretha Franklin's biggest UK hit at the time. In February 1987, UK music weekly New Musical Express published its critics' top 150 singles of all time, with Aretha Franklin's song: "I Say A Little Prayer", ranked at No. 1, followed by Al Green's song: "Tired Of Being Alone" and Dionne Warwick's song: "Walk On By". The song has been covered by many artists including 📻: Al Green, Martha And The Vandellas, Burt Bacharach, Wes Montgomery, Ahmad Jamal, Marita, Willie Mitchell, Sérgio Mendes, Floyd Cramer, Diana King, The Anita Kerr Singers, Mary Black, Susan Cadogan, Rosa Lopez, The Strangers, Reuben Wilson, Alan Moorhouse and more. She provided money for many grass roots Civil Rights groups, at times covering their payroll and performed at benefits concerts and protest events.
