The other song that Dion is best known for as a solo artist is "Runaround Sue", in which Dion criticizes a girl for behaving in the manner that he does in "The Wanderer". Before that, he was the leader of Dion & the Belmonts, best known for "I Wonder Why" and "Teenager in Love". Another rocker who was a contemporary of Dion was Del Shannon, best known for "Runaway".

The 50’s and the 60’s, they were all friends too. Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. are a prime example of that. The best are the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts where you can see all skin colors and backgrounds represented. They all laughed until they cried and make fun of each other but they were all friends. Jokes were about race, religion, state, country (lots of Italian jokes) and more but back then.... they laughed at themselves and stereotypes. They knew it was simply a joke and they gave it right back too.

I want to add to what Brian said about black performers of the time. Little Richard and Chuck Berry were rock and roll pioneers and one of the reasons why Elvis was disliked in the south at the start of his career was because he sounded like he was singing "black music." In some towns committees were formed to go to places that had juke boxes and "request" that they remove the Elvis Presley records. The number of black singers from that time would be too numerous to name but please be assured there was no shortage of blacks performers in rock and roll. You may not have seen any black performers or stars in that particular movie but check out any of the early rock and roll movies that starred rock and roll disc jockey Alan Freed and you'll see that the majority of performers featured in his films were black. Freed even had his television show canceled in 1957 when black singer Frankie Lymon was shown dancing with a white girl. I think you would be very well served to do some research because you'll find that in the realm of rock and roll there were no color barriers, it was all about the music.

BTW, it does matter...the Beatles when touring the States in the early '60s refused to play to segregated audiences. In the 1950s Buddy HOLLY played to mixed audiences both in the States and when touring in the UK. Elvis, who was born dirt poor, near the hood and he was hearing Black blues and gospel he was exposed to daily. Gospel was always his off stage go-to songs. Infact, Elvis recorded three gospel albums.

Trumpet is a brass instrument with three key button type things used to adjust notes. Trombone is another brass instrument no buttons just a slide used to change notes Saxophone is probably what got you to ask the question but it's a woodwind instrument I believe since it uses a reed on the mouth piece and has many buttons and valves to change notes and the body is brass

As far as the racism is concerned, I think you will find that there was less racism among the musicians of the time. They tended to be drawn by the music alone and learned from black musicians and singers themselves. Thank goodness for that because that's where most of our best music originated!

1961. That crowd was sure dead. Only one guy nodding his head along to the music. This song goes back to before I was born. Sad but true observation about segregation back then. You probably didn't make the connection but it points towards Dion's last big hit "Abraham, Martin and John", a tribute to four assassinated Americans -- Lincoln, King, JFK & RFK. Dion almost met his demise on "The Day The Music Died" when he declined a ride on the same flight that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. Dion was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

I was born in 1949. I got to experience change with segregation. I remember hearing about Ella Fitzgerald not being allowed to play at Club because of her race. Marilyn Monroe made a telephone call he learned the theater seating to be segregated. As late as 1964, The Beatles had taken a public stand on civil rights, when they at a segregated in Jacksonville, Florida. The history is deep. Living through the 60's I thought we would become simply the human race.
