This was her comeback hit from 1989. Her first top 10 since 1983's She Works Hard for the Money. She hooked up with Stock Aiken Waterman to produce this. SAW produced such hits as Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up and Together Forever, Venus and I Heard A Rumor by Bananarama, Locomotion by Kylie Minouge, You Spin Me Around by Dead and Alive among others. I like This Time I know it's for Real. Yeah the production is typical SAW, but Donna's vocals lift this track up.

Stock Aitken Waterman - I knew this song had a familiar feel. They definitely had a "sound" as producers. I actually like a lot of what they did. Not all of it, but a lot. This would be one that I like a great deal. Great comeback for Donna!

She was known as "The queen of Disco", but what impressed me was the quality and flow of her albums Many of her albums could be considered to be "rock operas" on their own. Certainly much more going on than just a collection of singles.

Back in those days, the concept album was popular throughout musicland in general. Starting with the likes of "The Who" with "Tommy" Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On"; Yes "Close to the Edge" ELP's "Tarkus" Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" (used in the movie "The Excorcist") Jethro Tull"s "Thick as a Brick" Parliment's Mothership Connection , Pink Flloyd's "The Wall" - just to name a few. But Donna Summer was in a class all her own with her romantic and sensual song style.

Her big hit "I Feel Love" released in 1977 was the precursor to the synth pop sound of the '80s. Groundbreaking in so many ways, it was added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important".

Jay, FYI...cowboy boots swept the nation in popularity back in the 70s, so people became comfortable wearing them both in country, as well as, in urban settings (see the movie Urban Cowboy). Donna Summer, in my view, can do no wrong, she has both iconic songs and groundbreaking beats along with Giorgio Moroder the talented composer). But she also has won Grammys in 4 different genres, and nominated in 5 different genres (pop, R&B, rock, dance and gospel ). She's also dipped her toe in movie soundtrack for the movie - The Deep - with "Down Deep Inside" which has a wonderful orchestral sound and a soft lilting voice reminiscent of her "Love to Love You" vocals. Please consider reacting to "Down Deep Inside" - trust me on this one guys.

You really need to react to "MacArthur Park" by Donna Summer. "This Time..." is a Stock Aitken Waterman production (Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte produced her in the good ol' days) and, while still a good dance tune that put Donna back in the Top 10, the overproduction doesn't do her voice justice. However, it's also a testament to her versatility; she can sing anything. You'd never guess that "I Feel Love" and "Hot Stuff" are by the same singer. There's a live version on The Midnight Special of her singing the album cut "A Man Like You" which demonstrates how incredible her voice really is.

Fun fact.. this song was originally written for 80s singer Kylie M. but she didn't want to sing it and Donna stepped in I think she did a great job, honestly one of my favorites from her

Donna Summer was amazing during her disco era of the 70’s but in the late 80’s she switched producers to work with the British trio Stock, Aitken, & Waterman respectively known two years earlier for being the producers responsible for Rick Astley’s fame. You can note the similarities in this song with Astley’s Never gonna give you up, and Together Forever. Specially the drums. They also worked with Dead or alive and Australian artist Kylie Minogue to name a few.

this song came at the end of her hits in 1989 - way past the disco era - and it was kind of considered a comeback hit. It was definitely a different sound as Jay noted but it was trying to refelct the type of music being played

The "Live and More Encore" album from a concert in New York that aired in 1999 on VH1 is amazing. She does a medley of She Works Hard for the Money, Hot Stuff, and On the Radio. Spectacular stuff.

“On the Radio”, “Love to Love You Baby”, “Could it Be Magic”, “Spring Affair”, “Heaven Knows” huge as well. So many great songs, true Queen of Disco and such a powerful voice. Such a beautiful Queen 🙏🏼❤️🔥On the Radio and Could it Be Magic always make me 😢. Such great talent, great success but I always felt she was underrated and unappreciated.❤❤️❤️

Jay, I get where you're coming from. As others have mentioned, this was her comeback in the nineties. Disco was basically dead and nobody wanted to admit that they liked it. The dance-sound of that era was completely different to disco, so hearing Donna Summer in this style, while knowing her disco sound can be surprising. Not to mention that this was produced by Stock, Aiken and Waterman, who had a distinctive sound. Most of their productions sound very similar.

It may be time to tag-out Donna and tag-in someone NEW to dance to. Y'all need to check out Miss JODY WATLEY -- specifically "Don't You Want Me?", "Looking For a New Love", and "Some Kind of Lover".

Donna Summer from 1989. Has it been that long...? For Female Friday I nominate: Karyn White. She had 3 really big songs: Superwoman, The Way You Love Me and Secret Rendezvous.

One of the best things about you two is you can contrast without it being a big thing. You buys are one of my favorite reaction pairs for that and that you two are both so willing to bounce around different genres.
