As everyone is saying, you absolutely could not get away from this song for like a solid year. it crossed over many formats....rock stations played it, but also Top 40 and pop stations played it as well and even some easy listening stations gave it air time as well. I still like the song, but at the time I was glad when it finally faded.

It’s an easy fun song. It actually the first one of his I remember hearing on the radio in the 70s, as my parents listened to AM soft rock/pop at the time. It reminds me of that Maxine Nightingale song that was on the Slapshot movie soundtrack. “Where we started from” was the chorus but I can’t remember the song name.

I think as one ages, one becomes more discerning. You wind up actually listening to the words instead of merely reacting to beat. Then you pick all the nuances of the words and the pronunciation of the words. But, yes, that girl can sing. Interesting aspect about duets: who is the better singer? The dominant voice or the undertone, the backing vocal? I think the backing vocal because they are lifting the other higher.

Kiki Dee was the first artist Elton John signed when he started his own record label. She was a street/club singer. He heard her and was so impressed with her talent, he signed her. This song was him lending his name to her in order to launch her career. Very generous move on his part.

Actually her career started several years before Elton's. She cut her first single in 1963. There's a clip on youtube of her in a British film with the Small Faces in 1965. He did sign her to his label, but it was her third label by that point I think. She was actually the first white British artist signed to Motown records, but she struggled to make hits. Elton was definitely a boost for her.

No no no. Kiki Dee was a hardworking pop-soul veteran, starting in 1963 with the Fontana label and then in 1970 was the first white British singer signed to Motown. A great, powerful example: "Why Don't I Run Away From You?" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f9aqaNBosZq9l4U.html

When this song came out (1976) there was no MTV, but thank God that there was Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, for which music videos like this were created. I used to watch Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special, until Saturday Night Live actually pushed Burt's show to midnight (it used to come on at 10:30). These two shows gave rock fans a chance to see rock stars (I couldn't afford rock concerts until I was an adult).

This is arguably the most 70's song ever created. (#1 in 1976) If you want one song to represent the decade, this works really well. Happy, "groovy" melody, lyrics about love and light, this was before disco, but leads you where the culture is heading, a good blend of the band feel of the early 70's transitioning to the dance feel of Disco

This track was released at the end of June during the incredible summer of 1976, and it was no.1 in the UK for 6 weeks, and then knocked off the top spot by ABBA's dancing queen, which was no.1 for 5 weeks. It was also no.1 in the US at the same time. The week before ABBA took over the top spot, the UK top10 in mid August looked like this: 1 - Elton John & Kiki Dee - Don't go breaking my heart 2 - Wings - Let 'em in 3 - Dr Hook - A little bit more 4 - David Dundas - Jeans on 5 - ABBA - Dancing queen 6 - Johnny Wakelin - In Zaire 7 - Billy Jo Spears - What I've got in mind 8 - Bee Gees (with brother Andy Gibb) - You should be dancing 9 - Tavares - Heaven must be missing an angel 10 - 5000 Volts - Dr Kiss Kiss

Elton was trying to give Brittney the courage to step back in the spotlight and show her she can still perform, that she still has it! He's done this with several other artists and says anyone can call him for help that is struggling and he will help with there careers. He's a wonderful person, I'm on his email list for announcing everything he does so I get to see videos most of the public doesn't. from 1976, Elton has had the 6 decade career in part because he is the master of adapting to the styles of music out there. This was cool to see.

One of my favourite songs which brings back so many memories, had my first girlfriend back in 1974, we broke up in 1976 after this song came out, i loved her so much, took me over 20 years to get over her, to this day, and i'm 67, i have never loved another woman, i never married, no children, and only dated one woman after her that i thought i was in love with, but wasn't. We lasted just under 2 years.

Great duet! Some of Sir Elton's other more notable duets include - "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" (Beatles songs) with John Lennon; "Wrap Her Up" with George Michael; "Slow Rivers" with Cliff Richard; and "Through the Storm" with Aretha Franklin.

Don't Go Breaking My Heart was a hit in the Summer of 1976. The summers in the mid 70's were full of these "feel good " songs like Silly Love Songs, Love Will Keep Us Together ,Afternoon Delight , Magic ( Pilot ) and Moonlight Feels Right

They both sound great, naturally, but, for me, this was the beginning of the time in Elton's career that there was a distinct shift away from the material that drew me to his "masterful" period. ✌

Elton John's big on helping out newer talent, he says it keeps him young and that each artist brings something new to him and he learns so much. The whole "dueting" is kind of his jam, in that way.

Check out "Levon" next, as well as "Philadelphia Freedom." Who is with me on this? Another thing you might want to do is go back and check out his live versions of some of the songs to which you have already reacted. In 1972 he did a series of songs at the Royal Festival Hall (I think you may have already reviewed Rocketman from that performance because you remarked on his shiny purple jacket. But he did so many more of his songs live and did them so perfectly. All of these are piano intensive for Jay: Here is "Honky Cat" at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mq2gqMhyyNTNo58.html; "Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters" at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fpyknKh8v9HefYE.html; "Tiny Dancer" at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odp6idKSncm4YnU.html; and "Border Song" (often mistakenly called "Holy Moses" at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g66Yp9J_mbPKdIk.html.

Us baby boomers were lucky to have been age perfect for Elton John's heyday from 1970-1975. These GenX young'uns were too young and had to rely on their parents...

Nope. We found music on our own as teenagers in the early 80’s, music from the 60’s to the 80’s. In fact as far as Elton is concerned most of my class went to see him in ‘84…and we sang to all the older songs too. We actually knew them better than his then-current hits in the 80’s. Most of us early GenX didn’t have boomer parents. Ours were Silent Generation. I appreciate the youngun comment though, as the z’s and millenials all think GenX is old. 😉
