Arguably the greatest 2 minutes and 29 seconds in rock history. The song is full of drug references allowed them to get around the censors and on to the radio.

There was another reactor who called Grace’s voice weak because she was using a vibrato. She has some of the best vocal control of the 60s psychedelic bands.

This song was written by the singer Grace Slick .. the rythmn inspired in the famous classic piece, Bolero .. by Maurice Ravel.

This song uses the same strategy as Ravel's "Bolero."

Grace Slick wrote this song because her mother always told her not to do drugs but then would read her Alice in Wonderland which is all about drugs. The two types of pill were "uppers" and "downers" with the uppers making you feel 10 feet tall and downers making you feel small. The mushroom was psilocybin, or magic mushrooms, which is very similar to LSD. It was one of the first songs to be able to sneak counter-culture drug references into a song through using Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as a metaphor.

This song exemplifies the 1960's hippie / flower power movement with the introduction of psychedelic drugs / LSD affecting our music, art, fashion, etc. Grace Slick's voice embodied the period, you can't think back on this time without hearing it in your head, very possibly due to this song. It certainly is a "trip." ( Haha, pun intended!)

Her fist appearance on Live TV and she was of course, nervous. Note at the end of the first line she smiles slightly, she missed the beet but was able to keep going and she knew no one would notice it and she was over the hump of her fear. She had the vocal control of a scalpel but the power of a Sherman Tank. Every but as talented as Janice. This came out the same week I was born and when I was five I had the biggest crush on her. :)

It's helpful to watch or read Alice In Wonderland in order to recognize lots of the references in the songs. It's nice that you associated the song with the Matrix right away. That movie also played with Alice in Wonderland -- especially at the beginning, when Neo had to follow the woman with the rabbit tattoo in order to find Morpheus.

If this is the first time you have heard this song, then that means you have never seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Which you should definitely check out.

Thanks for the reaction. Grace (singer and writer) said "Writing weird stuff about Alice backed by a dark Spanish march was in step with what was going on in San Francisco then. We were all trying to get as far away from the expected as possible."
