Victim of changes is from the same album and is arguably the best on the album and has a lot of the same elements in this song. Both the studio version and the live 1983 are excellent

Yes! Glad you started with the early JP. Most reactors start with Painkiller and really miss the great build up. So many great albums and songs to choose from. Suggest Victim of Changes next!

OMG this is awesome thank you soooooooo much Cliff, judas Priest has been my fav band since 1979. Please go down the rabbit hole with Judas Priest Rob Halford's voice is ungodly wicked his 4 octave vocal range is nuts. I think you'd really like Victim of Changes from the album Sad Wings of Destiny or even a live version from the Live at the Seminole you will then see exactly how tight this band is. Rob Halford at 72 still has his high vocal range granted he doesn't do it as much now but he will never disappoint

Sad Wings Of Destiny, the album this song was on, came out in 1977. A year later I was walking through a flea market with my dad and saw the artwork on the cover and bugged the old man for 50 cents to buy the cassette. Running up on 50 years later, I'm still a hardcore JP fan. They were my first step to being a lifelong Metal fan.

Good place to start with Judas Priest, their 2nd album Sad Wings of Destiny, they had begun to find a band identity and direction, of course they would help create the classic denim and leather metal look a few albums later, the sound and style of heavy metal had begun to take shape with this album.

I would also add "Run of the Mill" to the list, my favorite Priest tune of all time with so much feeling! If you want a fantastic live song to check out, Rainbow "Mistreated" live in Munich '77. Ronnie James Dio on Vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Cozy Powell on drums...soo good. New Sub here!

Rob Halford has to be in the top 5 of the Greatest Metal Vocalists of all time. I've seen them at least 8-9 times over the many decades and not only is Halford a Metal God, but Glenn Tipton is a Metal God of the first order. I met & mixed with them several times backstage due to my cousin working for the largest concert promoter in Texas at the time. Good times.

Best of Judas Priest... 1) Riding on the Wind 2) Heads Are Gonna Roll 3) Night Crawler 4) Touch of Evil 5) Hell Bent for Leather 6) Deceiver 7) Freewheel Burning 8) Heading out to the Highway

This is early Judas Priest from 1975 (I believe)... the band had just started and would evolve into a beast of a heavy metal band dressed in leather & metal spikes w/ vocalist Rob Halford riding a Harley motorbike on stage at Priest concerts. Judas Priest took their name from a Bob Dylan song, formed in Birmingham, England as a local rock band by vocalist Al Atkins... K.K. Downing (guitar) and Ian Hill (bass) of Priest were joined in 1973 by Rob Halford (vocals) who could reach high notes that Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin could not... As Priest were signed in 1974 to a small UK label, the band added Glenn Tipton (guitar) and made Judas Priest a twin lead guitar band... This BBC performance was done around that time, but the band was broke and 2 albums had failed to sell by 1976. Judas Priest were on the verge of breaking up in 1977 due to finances when an American label CBS Records offered the band a record contract... They recorded a 3rd album 'Sin after sin' in 1977 and started touring the US as an opening act as each album grew more intense and faster in tempos... Rob Halford (who is gay) decided in 1978 that he needed a makeover; he visited an S&M shop in London and bought a leather outfit w/ metal studs, leather pants and a bullwhip... The other members thought he looked striking and adopted the same outfits on stage. That became a standard image for heavy metal bands in the 80's. Priest toured America and Europe and ended up playing Japan in 1979... they finally broke big w/ their 6th album 'British Steel' in 1980 w/ Dave Holland (drums) joining and by 1982, they had a platinum record 'Screaming for vengeance' and were headlining arenas worldwide as one of the biggest heavy metal bands. The dual guitars of Glenn Tipton & K.K. Downing set a standard for heavy metal and Rob Halford's high, intense vocal range had set a new standard for the genre. However, Priest encountered some setbacks... commercial records like 'Turbo' (1986) did not make them any bigger in sales and by 1989, they were sued for allegedly inspiring a double suicide of 2 of their fans in Nevada w/ "subliminal messages" in a 1978 track... The band was on trial in 1990 and had to prove in court that the perceived 'message' was a pure coincidence... They were finally acquitted, but admitted that it took a toll... The band w/ drummer Scott Travis joining, released their angriest and most intense album 'Painkiller' in 1990. In 1992, Rob Halford announced that he was leaving Judas Priest, shocking their fans globally... he worked on solo projects like the band Fight, while Priest went on hiatus for years... In 1997, Judas Priest announced a new vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens, but Priest fans would not accept a band without Halford on vocals after 2 studio albums - 'Jugulator' (1997) and 'Demolition' (2001). Priest reunited w/ Rob Halford and finally announced a reunion tour in 2004, releasing the comeback album 'Angel of retribution' in 2005... followed by the concept album 'Nostradamus' (2008). In 2010, original guitarist K.K. Downing announced he was leaving Judas Priest, citing differences w/ Glenn Tipton and the band's management... He formed a new band K.K.'s Priest w/ vocalist 'Ripper' Owens in 2019 and has released 2 albums since. Judas Priest hired Richie Faulkner (guitar) to replace Downing in 2011 and completed 2 more albums - 'Redeemer of Souls' (2014) and 'Firepower' (2018)... Glenn Tipton announced that he was diagnosed w/ Parkinson's disease and would be replaced on tour by Andy Sneap on guitar... Richie Faulkner also survived a health scare in 2021 when he needed surgery on tour for an aortic rupture; Faulkner recovered and was back on tour in 2022. Judas Priest is also working on a new album.

Possibly my favourite Judas Priest song! (And they were for quite a few years my favourite band, so that's saying something.) Another vote for _Victim_ _of_ _Changes_ next, my preference would be the 1983 live version but that's not essential. Enjoy!

This is wonderful time capsule for my bike on heroin bands actually had to be proficient to deliver Flawless performances live without trickery and other mechanical and digital Shenanigans going on. This is a great song and Rob sings his ass off on it but it's probably not what I would consider representative of priests music as a whole, as this is really early in their career. They definitely got heavier over the years and really came to embody so much of what we now Associated as heavy metal. But there are some really cool ins and outs and ups and downs and stylistic changes that they've gone through over the years and it's very cool you started with this Aurora because it is indeed unique.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "Tom Traubert's Blues (4 Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)" by Tom Waits (Also known as "Waltzing Matilda"). His voice is so unique that one critic once described it as though "it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months and then taken outside & run over with a car"! He's a well-regarded & respected songwriter from within the "Rock" genre from the 70's & 80's. I'd LOVE to hear your take on his signature song. Link Here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nr1iqdyq2d6nd4E.html
