You are correct. This is a metaphor You missed it in the beginning. The two are not playing cards. They are just sharing a train and "too tired to sleep". "The boredom overtook us and he began to speak". When he told the narrator that he was "out of aces", he meant he could tell the younger one was distressed. I was afraid you were going to miss meaning, but it became obvious to you. I'm glad "Every hand is a winner & every hand is a loser." No matter how bad your hand looks when it's dealt, you can work with it. No matter how great your hand looks when it is dealt, you can still do badly. You have to pay close attention to the lyrics of many Kenny Roger's songs.

To expand - "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em" - You have to be able to judge which opportunities you should see through, and which ones you should pass on because they were meant for someone else. "Know when to walk away, know when the run." - You have to know when it's time to cut your loses and move on to something else. If it's bad (illegal or unethical), you should get out as quick as you can. "Never count your money when you're sittin' at the table." - Don't live your life keeping score because you might miss something important or draw unwanted, negative attention (a GREAT line and lesson in today's world of social media). "There'll be time enough for counting when the dealin's done." - Instead, wait to take stock of the life you lived in your final days.

My daddy always said "Never count your money at the table". Took me till I was 25 to realize that classy poker players never rub their opponents' faces in their losses by counting winnings at the table. Everybody at the table always knows within a few dollars how much each player has. So, basically, don't gloat over a conquest. There is plenty of time to savor the win out of sight.

Before his solo career Kenny Rogers was the lead singer for a group called The First Edition. They were the homecoming concert Headliners my freshman year in college so that was 1972. The opening act was an up-and-coming southern rock band called Black Oak Arkansas who had a little one hit wonder called Jim Dandy to the rescue. Yes I'm telling my age LOL what a great show. 1 of the first hit songs the first edition had was called I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in. It was very psychedelic hippie 70s LOL He's got just the right amount of that little grit or Gravely sound in his voice. Otherwise it's as smooth as molasses. And he's not bad on the eyes either for this old girl.

Never count your money when your setting at the table. Kind of like, have you ever thought, well I have enough money to pay my bills, get groceries and then will have a few bucks left over, but then all of a sudden your car breaks down, or you get sick and have to miss work. You counted your money why you was at the table, you did count on what you was going to lose.

It is a metaphor on life. "Every hand's winner and every hand's a loser' - play the hand in life you were dealt to the best of your ability. Also, the game (new players) and your hand is constantly changing 'Knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep' - know what is positive in your life and hold on to it. Throw away what isn't. Too many other but will finish with 'never count your money while your sitting at the table. Time enough for counting when the dealings done' - focus on the present because you can tally up your Ws & Ls when this game of earthly life is over. That's my too bit interpretation of this song. It was a song, then like 10 years later they made it into a movie, then a couple more movies. Coward of the County was kind of the same. A song then a couple years later a movie. I think Coward is a damn good movie an would love to see your reaction. This song is a life metaphor, you're right there.

Thos song has been featured in many movies and even has it's own movie series starring Kenny Roger's and many other western legends. Kenny Rogers is the greatest country singer of all time! I'm from a little town called Mesquite, it's about 90 miles north of Vegas, this was my song I played every time I headed to a casino, btw, Mesquite is a much better place to gamble, your odds are much better there, I worked in one of the casinos, I was the supervisor of a crew that counted all the table game money and the slot machine money, we'd count hundreds of thousands of dollars a day, I'll tell ya all, the best time to gamble is New years Eve, we'd pay out thousands of dollars that night, just a little info for those who like to gamble 😁

This was a crossover hit country, pop, blues and many others. It was monster hit. Everyone has heard the chorus. It has become part of the popular lexicon. It is just not everyone knows what song it comes from. In fact the song was selected for preservation in the national congressional record for cultural treasures. You are right, it is a metaphor. There is a whole string of Gambler movies with Kenny playing the lead role. Five ir six of them.Set in the old west. He also does a movie called McShayne, set in modern day Las Vegas. And a movie based on the song Coward of the County. All good movies worth watching. They are all free on You Tube.

I think they may have made a movie to go along with the song but the song was on its own. He has several story songs Coward of the County Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town Sing Your Song Sweet Music Man Not so much a story song but "Dropped In to See What Condition My Condition Was In" was a favorite from way back.

“You never count your money at the table…” He’s talking about not making any final judgements or saying what you’ve got until “the dealin’s done”…. Which is after you die and the final judgement can come through on what you earned in life (at which point there’s “plenty of time for counting”).

Kenny was a great story teller. yes, you are correct this song has been in a lot of things, They even made a movie based on this song. As everyone else has stated, Coward of the County & Lucille should be next on the list for sure. This is a deep rabbit hole filled with amazing music. You will not be disappointed. :-)
