I just looked up this song to see what Bette Davis's reaction was to it and found out that this is actually a cover of a song written by Jackie DeShannon in 1974, which sounds really different than this, but this is definitely the better version. After Kim Carnes had this hit, this is what Davis did according to Wikipedia: "then 73 years old, Davis wrote letters to Carnes, Weiss, and DeShannon to thank all three of them for making her 'a part of modern times,' and said her grandson now looked up to her. After their Grammy wins, Davis sent them roses as well." Bette Davis was a class act all the way

I believe the e in her last name is silent, such that her name is pronounced as if it was spelled Karnz. This song was the best selling single of 1981 and is second only to "Physical", by Olivia Newton-John, as the best selling single of the 1980s. Other good Kim Carnes songs would be "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer", which is a duet with Kenny Rogers, "Crazy in the Night", and "What About Me?", which was a collaboration with Kenny Rogers and James Ingram.
@jonm1114
@jonm1114 3 жыл бұрын
@@utubnagain Thanks for the reply. I should have been more specific about what I meant by "best selling". You are undoubtedly correct in terms of total sales. "We Are the World" has sold something like 20 million copies, which puts it in the top ten pop singles of all time for total sales. My comment is based on the weekly sales figures and the total number of weeks that a song topped the Billboard charts as the best selling single. Of the singles released in the '80s, "Physical" spent the longest time at number one on the charts at ten weeks. "Bette Davis Eyes" comes in second at nine weeks as the number one best selling single. Third place goes to The Police with "Every Breath You Take", which sat at the top of the charts for eight weeks. While "We Are the World" racked up an enormous total sales figure, it held onto the number one spot in the charts for less time, at four weeks.

Bette Davis is a cultural reference in this song. She was probably the greatest actress of her generation. (1930's through the 1960's.) Almost ALWAYS played the role of the 'Femme Fatale." This is pretty much the only song of Kim Carnes that I know; I didn't much care for it, at the time, but I've learned to appreciate that great raspy voice. Great reaction. (She also had a quick line in the "We Are the World" video that you just recently reacted to; the Live Aid for Africa. )

This 80s classic was Billboard's #1 song of 1981, having spent 9 non-consecutive weeks at #1 (after five weeks at #1, the "Stars on 45 Medley" knocked it off the summit for one week before regaining the top spot for 4 more weeks). Jackie DeShannon (famous for the smash hits, "What the World Needs Now is Love" and "Put a Little Love in Your Heart") co-wrote and originally recorded "Bette Davis Eyes", which appears on her 1975 album, New Arrangement. You should check out Kim Carnes' other Top 10 hit, "More Love" and her Top 20 single, "Crazy in the Night (Barking at Airplanes)" as well. :-)

My uncle played this on his tape player when I was a child. I always thought it was Rod Stewart singing. :)

One of the first videos I remember seeing on MTV as a kid. I’m old enough to remember when MTV was Music Television. That synth sound in this tune definitely brings nostalgia to me.

Crazy In The Night is a cute pop song by Kim Carnes. More known for being a successful songwriter in the 1970s and 1980s, her 2nd biggest hit (not counting We Are The World) is 1980's "More Love," plus she had two #15 hits: What About Me in late 1984 and Crazy In The Night in Summer 1985. Personally, I like her danceable 1980s output, like Voyeur, Invisible Hands, You Make My Heart Beat Faster, and Abadabadango.

She was in "WE ARE THE WORLD" was beside Cindy Lauper in the video. I'm about sure you have reacted to that one. If you like Kim you will love Bonnie Tyler in "TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART" Kim also sings "IM HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO"

Kim Carnes started out with as a singer/songwriter in the 1960s, and she did the main vocal for "Nobody Knows", a song from the original "Vanishing Point" movie with Barry Newman, directed by Richard Serafian. In a commentary for a DVD of the film that was released much later, Serafian relates that Carnes had suffered some damage to her voice that shows up in the raspiness from "Bette Davis Eyes." For what it's worth, I think Bette Devis's eyes are most striking in her early films, such as "The Petrified Forest." Best Regards!

Her hair was Harlow Gold (Jean Harlow 30s sex vixen/movie star) She had Greta Garbo Stand-off SIGHS (Another 30s movie star vixen) meaning she had no time for ordinary people, and at last, she had Bette Davis Eyes, so whoever this IT GIRL was, she was gifted with it all.

This was my favorite song in the early 80's I have the 45, then I had it on a cassette then on a CD and now on a play list! Haha! Bette Davis is a LEGEND in films. She was no one to be messed with! In fact her final resting place in Forest Lawn cemetary in LA is inscribed "She Did It The Hard Way". Some of my favorite movies are: "All About Eve" "The Little Foxes" "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" and "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" But those are only a few I can think of off the top of my head! She had MANY from the 30's to the early 80's. Bette Davis' eyes were large blue and could see right through you. It is said Bette Davis sent Kim Carnes flowers when she heard this song. It was a huge hit. I love the name dropping in this song: "Her hair is Harlow Gold" (Jean Harlow) "She's got Greta Garbo's stand off sighs, she's got Bette Davis eyes" Jean Harlow, Greta Garbo....look them up! 😉
