Like you, and many others here, I grew up listening to this (and other Led Zeppelin classics) as well as bands such as Pink Floyd, and we were BLESSED. To see another generation listening to their unique gift for the first time is quite a trip. The absolute GENIUS of Led Zeppelin cannot be argued. They will remain one of the top five groups of all time for the next hundred years. It doesn't matter who comes along between now and then, they will still be there, guaranteed.

We have to remember that this was 1969. The world hadn't seen anything like Led Zep. They were the blueprint for all rock bands. It's easy to forget in 2023 how shocking, gargantuan and epic Led Zeppelin were. The USA had just got over the first British invasion and Beatlemania and then Led Zeppelin came along like a God throwing thunderbolts.

Stacey, I own a book titled "Deep Blues" by Robert Palmer (no relation to the late singer of the same name) which explores black music brought over from Africa with the slaves and ends around the mid 60's. (BB King comes in near the end of the book) My point is, Jimmy Page was hugely influenced by the black musicians from the 20's to the 50's. This book goes into great detail about those old blues boys and cites numerous examples of lyrics that were "naughty". Everyone knew what was being implied but yet there could still be an innocent explanation for it, LOL. I urge anyone who reads this to find a copy of this book. Once you read it 2 or 3 times, you will understand where every band from (1962-Present) The Stones/Beatles/Zep/The Who/Pink Floyd/Sabbath/Queen/Rush/ ACDC/Van Halen/Iron Maiden/Tool, etc comes from. Without the guys detailed in this book the music we know and love might not have happened.

Something about this song you need to recognize. Whole Lotta Love was ground breaking in it's use of bass and drum. This song was the first top song that used bass riffs as a lead instrumental, paving the way for a lot of other groups to do the same. Same for the drum solo.

I've always felt that this song is one of the best pure rock and roll songs ever. That weird part in the middle was kind of a hip thing to do in 1969 when this song was released. It adds to the no-holds -barred out of control vibe of the song. The instrument that makes all the weird noises is called a "theramin." When the guitar solo comes in after it, it really hits hard. BJ was right about the meaning of "back door man" too. They guy that comes and goes via the back door when her husband/boyfriend is going or coming via the front door. Considering that this was the opening track on Zep's second album, it was just such a great blast of bravado that cemented Led Zeppelin's image early on. I love watching reactions to songs like this, so I can imagine what it's like to hear it for the first time. Great, classic song.

We used to call parts like the middle section here the "freakout", and for a brief period of time, in that sort of transition from acid rock to heavy metal, no self-respecting groovy rock and roll band would dare to release a signature song without a part like that in it. Usually, they would edit this part out for a single version for radio, and only the hipper people who had heard the album would know about the "freakout"...It was a definite holdover from the psychedelic era...

It's all about "sex, drugs, and rock and roll". Zeppelin would often do panning in their songs so different parts would go back and forth between the headphones. The breakdown part was Jimmy Page playing a Theremin, which is an instrument that looks like an aerial and emits an oscillating sound by moving your hand close to and around the aerial while he used a dial to control pitch. I'm glad you did the studio cut because the "official" video has a shortened Theremin part and I'm also glad you've done another Zep song because it's been a minute lol. Please do more!

Best drummer, best guitarist, etc. All four of these guys were ranked as #1 in their respective category. They were beyond a supergroup. They are arguably lb-4-lb the greatest collection of musical talent ever assembled in modern music, including one-off collaborations and supergroup albums. Just insane to think about these four just happened to get together and form a band and make some music. I think they were 19 when they made this song. Insane.

ROCK & ROLL!! Asia, BJ, thank you guys for playing this. I never have so much fun as when I watch you guys. If I could wish for something I would wish to be able to take the two of you back in time, back in the day and just go to a couple of old school rock concerts. I think that you would have really liked to be there just once. Anyway I just love the responses that you have to some of the early music. Your reactions are so sincere and cute that I laugh along with you till I cry. I enjoy the work that you do here so much. Hope y'all have a Happy New Year! Peace & Love to ya. ;-) ;-) ;-)

You guys should listen to the live version from their "How the West Was Won" album. They do a medley of stuff in the middle of it, so it feels like 5 songs... 🤘😎

BJ nailed it. There’s a lot of Led Zep DNA out there. Hard to judge em, when you get the pick of the litter in every town you play in.

This was a great 45 record because the flip side was "Living Loving Maid", another great song. It is the one that "Whole Lotta Love" leads into on the album, I'm pretty sure: "With a purple umbrella and a fifty cent hat..."* *Not talking about the artist, Fifty Cent. His hats are more expensive. In concert, those weird sounds in the instrumental section of "Whole Lotta Love", are shown to be made by a violin bow on guitars and cymbals. Jimmy Page did some of that in his gig with the earlier perhaps greater band, The Yardbirds...who could also boast of Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck as guitarists in the band. Lots to explore. Thanks for sharing great music.

Back in the early 70s if you listen to bands like this you were a hippie, the first time I seen them in concert back in 1975 here in St.louis I barely walked out of the arena lol. My second favorite band ever. Robert Plant said in a interview when he was a young boy living in England that the first time he heard Elvis sing on the radio he knew he was going to be a singer. Elvis was his favorite singer growing up. He findly got to meet his idol when the band went to see Elvis in concert. Elvis knew they were there and mentioned that Led Zeppelin was in the crowd and Robert Plant said he wiped the tears from his eyes. When one of Elvis's bodyguards walked up to the table and told the band that he wanted them to come over to his hotel after the show to meet each other they were shocked. That interview is on utube if anybody is interested in seeing it. It's pretty interesting.

I was 12 when this came out. Was raised on a farm and we didn't get to watch alot of television. So the radio was our friend. Built a ton of drag racing car models listening to it. But you amaze me B.J. how you can analize a song and pretty much come up with the meaning. God Bless you 2.
